Hofstadter butterflies in magnetically modulated graphene bilayer: an algebraic approach

It has been shown that Bernal stacked bilayer graphene (BLG) in a uniform magnetic field demonstrates integer quantum Hall effect with a zero Landau-level anomaly \cite{Geimbilayer}. In this article we consider such system in a two dimensional periodic magnetic modulation with square lattice symmetry. It is shown algebraically that the resulting Hofstadter spectrum can be expressed in terms of the corresponding spectrum of monolayer graphene in a similar magnetic modulation. In the weak-field limit, using the tight-binding model, we also derive the Harper-Hofstadter equation for such BLG system in a periodic magnetic modulation. We further demonstrate the topological quantisation of Hall conductivity in such system and point out that the quantised Hall plateaus are equally spaced for all quantum numbers for the quantised Hall conductivity.

Breathing mode in two-dimensional binary self-bound Bose gas droplets

In this work, we present the study of the stationary structures and the breathing mode behavior of a two-dimensional self-bound binary Bose droplet. We employ an analytical approach using a variational ansatz with a super-Gaussian trial order parameter and compare it with the numerical solutions of the extended Gross-Pitaevskii equation. We find that the super-Gaussian is superior to the often used Gaussian ansatz in describing the stationary and dynamical properties of the system. We find that for sufficiently large non-rotating droplets the breathing mode is energetically favourable compared to the self-evaporating process. For small self-bound systems our results differ based on the ansatz. Inducing angular momentum by imprinting multiply quantized vortices at the droplet center, this preference for the breathing mode persists independent of the norm.

Symmetry breaking in binary Bose-Einstein condensates in the presence of an inhomogeneous artificial gauge field

We study a two component Bose-Einstein condensate in the presence of an inhomogeneous artificial gauge field. In response to this field, the condensate forms a localised vortex lattice structure that leads to a non-trivial symmetry breaking in the phase separated regime. The underlying physical mechanism can be understood by considering the energy landscape and we present a simplified model that is capable of reproducing the main features of the phase separation transition. The intuition gained by numerically solving this simplified model is then corroborated using the analytical Thomas-Fermi model.

Self-bound supersolid stripe phase in binary Bose-Einstein condensates

Supersolidity - a coexistence of superfluidity and crystalline or amorphous density variations - has been vividly debated ever since its conjecture. While the initial focus was on helium-4, recent experiments uncovered supersolidity in ultra-cold dipolar quantum gases. Here, we propose a new self-bound supersolid phase in a binary mixture of Bose gases with short-range interactions, making use of the non-trivial properties of spin-orbit coupling. We find that a first-order phase transition from a self-bound supersolid stripe phase to a zero-minimum droplet state of the Bose gas occurs as a function of the Rabi coupling strength. These phases are characterized using the momentum distribution, the transverse spin polarization and the superfluid fraction. The critical point of the transition is estimated in an analytical framework. The predicted density-modulated supersolid stripe and zero-minimum droplet phase should be experimentally observable in a binary mixture of $^{39}$K with spin-orbit coupling.

Controlled creation of three-dimensional vortex structures in Bose--Einstein condensates using artificial magnetic fields

The physics of quantized vortex excitations in atomic Bose-Einstein condensates has been extensively studied in recent years.Although simple vortex lines are relatively easy to create, control, and measure in experiments, it is a lot more difficult to do the same for vortex ring structures. Here we suggest and explore a method for generating and controlling superfluid vortex rings, vortex ring lattices, and other three dimensional vortex structures in toroidally-trapped superfluid Bose--Einstein condensates by using the artificial magnetic field produced by an optical nanofiber. The presence of the fiber also necessitates a multiply-connected geometry and we show that in this situation the presence of these vortex structures can be deduced from exciting the scissors mode of the condensate.

Two-leg ladder Bose Hubbard models with staggered fluxes

We investigate the ground state properties of ultracold atoms trapped in a two-leg ladder potential in the presence of an artificial magnetic field in a staggered configuration. We focus on the strongly interacting regime and use the Landau theory of phase transitions and a mean field Gutzwiller variational method to identify the stable superfluid phases and their boundaries with the Mott-insulator regime as a function of magnetic flux. In addition, we calculate the local and chiral currents of these superfluid phases, which show a staggered vortex anti-vortex configuration. The analytical results are confirmed by numerical simulations using a cluster mean-field theory approach.

Twonniers: Interaction-induced effects on Bose-Hubbard parameters

We study the effects of the repulsive on-site interactions on the broadening of the localized Wannier functions used for calculating the parameters to describe ultracold atoms in optical lattices. For this, we replace the common single-particle Wannier functions, which do not contain any information about the interactions, by two-particle Wannier functions ("Twonniers") obtained from an exact solution which takes the interactions into account. We then use these interaction-dependent basis functions to calculate the Bose--Hubbard model parameters, showing that they are substantially different both at low and high lattice depths, from the ones calculated using single-particle Wannier functions. Our results suggest that density effects are not negligible for many parameter ranges and need to be taken into account in metrology experiments.

Extended Bose Hubbard model for two leg ladder systems in artificial magnetic fields

We investigate the ground state properties of ultracold atoms with long range interactions trapped in a two leg ladder configuration in the presence of an artificial magnetic field. Using a Gross-Pitaevskii approach and a mean field Gutzwiller variational method, we explore both the weakly interacting and strongly interacting regime, respectively. We calculate the boundaries between the density-wave/supersolid and the Mott-insulator/superfluid phases as a function of magnetic flux and uncover regions of supersolidity. The mean-field results are confirmed by numerical simulations using a cluster mean field approach.

Creating superfluid vortex rings in artificial magnetic fields

Artificial gauge fields are versatile tools that allow to influence the dynamics of ultracold atoms in Bose-Einstein condensates. Here we discuss a method of artificial gauge field generation stemming from the evanescent fields of the curved surface of an optical nanofibre. The exponential decay of the evanescent fields leads to large gradients in the generalized Rabi frequency and therefore to the presence of geometric vector and scalar potentials. By solving the Gross-Pitaevskii equation in the presence of the artificial gauge fields originating from the fundamental HE$_{11}$ mode of the fibre, we show that vortex rings can be created in a controlled manner. We also calculate the magnetic fields resulting from the higher order HE$_{21}$, TE$_{01}$, and TM$_{01}$ modes and compare them to the fundamental HE$_{11}$ mode.

Dynamical polarizability, screening, and plasmons in one, two, and three dimensional massive Dirac systems

We study the density-density response function of a collection of charged massive Dirac particles and present analytical expressions for the dynamical polarization function in one, two and three dimensions. The polarization function is then used to find the dispersion of the plasmon modes, and electrostatic screening of Coulomb interactions within the random phase approximation. We find that for massive Dirac systems, the oscillating screened potential decays as $r^{-1}$, $r^{-2}$ and $r^{-3}$ in one, two, and three dimensions respectively. However for massless Dirac systems there is no electrostatic screening or Friedel oscillation in one dimension, and the oscillating screened potential decays as $r^{-3}$ and $r^{-4}$, in two and three dimensions respectively. Our analytical results for the polarization function will be useful for exploring the physics of massive and massless Dirac materials in different experimental systems with varying dimensionality.

Plasmon modes of a massive Dirac plasma, and their superlattices

We explore the collective density oscillations of a collection of charged massive Dirac particles, in one, two and three dimensions and their one dimensional superlattice. We calculate the long wavelength limit of the dynamical polarization function analytically, and use the random phase approximation to obtain the plasmon dispersion. The density dependence of the long wavelength plasmon frequency in massive Dirac systems is found to be different compared to systems with parabolic, and gapless Dirac dispersion. We also calculate the long wavelength plasmon dispersion of a 1d metamaterial made from 1d and 2d massive Dirac plasma. Our analytical results will be useful for exploring the use of massive Dirac materials as electrostatically tunable plasmonic metamaterials and can be experimentally verified by infrared spectroscopy as in the case of graphene [L. Ju. et. al., Nat. Nanotechnol. 6, 630 (2011)].

Synthetic Gauge Fields for Ultra Cold Atoms: A Primer

We start by reviewing the concept of gauge invariance in quantum mechanics, for Abelian and Non-Ableian cases. Then we idescribe how the various gauge potential and field can be associated with the geometrical phase acquired by a quantum mechanical wave function while adiabatically evolving in a parameter space. Subsequently we show how this concept is exploited to generate light induced gauge field for neutral ultra cold bosonic atoms. As an example of such light induced Abelian and Non Abelian gauge field for ultra cold atoms we disucss ultra cold atoms in a rotating trap and creation of synthetic spin orbit coupling for ultra cold atomic systems using Raman lasers.

Finite time interaction quench in a Luttinger model

We analyze the dynamics of a Luttinger model following a quench in the electron-electron interaction strength, where the change in the interaction strength occurs over a finite time scale $\tau$. We study the Loschmidt echo (the overlap between the initial and final state) as a function of time, both numerically and within a perturbation scheme, treating the change in the interaction as a small parameter, for all $\tau$. We derive the corrections appearing in, a.) the Loschmidt echo for a finite quench duration $\tau$, b.) the scaling of the echo following a sudden ($\tau \to 0$) quench, and c.) the scaling of the echo after an adiabatic ($\tau \to \infty$) quench. We study in detail, the limiting cases of the echo in the early time and infinite time limit, and provide scaling arguments to understand these in a general context. We also show that our perturbative results are in good agreement with the exact numerical ones.

Hydrodynamic theory of Rotating Ultracold Bose Einstein Condensates in Supersolid Phase

Within mean field Gross-Pitaevskii framework, ultra cold atomic condensates with long range interaction is predicted to have a supersolid like ground state beyond a critical interaction strength. Such mean field supersolid like ground state has periodically modulated superfluid density which implies the coexistence of superfluid and crystalline order. Ultra cold atomic system in such mean field ground state can be subjected to artificial gauge field created either through rotation or by introducing space dependent coupling among hyperfine states of the atoms using Raman lasers. Starting from this Gross-Pitaevskii energy functional that describes such systems at zero temperature, we construct hydrodynamic theory to describe the low energy long wavelength excitations of such rotating supersolid of weakly interacting ultra cold atoms in two spatial dimensions for generic type of long range interaction. We treat the supersolidity in such system within the framework of well known two fluid approximation. Considering such system in the fast rotation limit where a vortex lattice in superfluid coexists with the supersolid lattice, we analytically obtain the dispersion relations of collective excitations around this equilibrium state. The dispersion relation gives the modes of the rotating supersolid which can be experimentally measured within the current technology. We point out that this can clearly identify such a ultra cold atomic supersolid phase in an unambiguous way.

Density Wave -Supersolid and Mott Insulator-Superfluid transition in presence of an artificial gauge field : a strong coupling perturbation approach

We study the effect of an artificial gauge field on the zero temperature phase diagram of extended Bose Hubbard model, that describes ultra cold atoms in optical lattices with long range interaction using strong coupling perturbation theory . We determine analytically the effect of the artificial gauge field on the density wave - supersolid (DW-SS) and the the Mott insulator-superfluid (MI -SF) transition boundary . The momentum distribution at these two transition boundaries is also calculated in this approach. It is shown that such momentum distribution which can be observed in time of flight measurement, reveals the symmetry of the gauge potential through the formation of magnetic Brillouin zone and clearly distinguishes between the DW-SS and MI-SF boundary. We also point out that in symmetric gauge the momentum distribution structure at these transition boundaries bears distinctive signatures of vortices in supersolid and superfluid phases.

Cold atoms in rotating optical lattice with nearest neighbour interaction

Extended Bose Hubbard models with nearest neighbour interaction describe minimally the effect of long range interaction on ultra cold atoms in deep optical lattices. Rotation of such optical lattices subject such neutral cold atoms to the effect of an artificial magnetic field. The modification of the phase boundaries of the density wave and Mott Insulator phases due to this rotation are shown to be related to the edge spectrum of spinorial and scalar Harper equation. Corresponding profiles of the checkerboard vortex states with sublattice modulated superfluid order parameter near density wave phase boundary are calculated.
