Generalized Steepest Descent Methods on Riemannian Manifolds and Hilbert Spaces: Convergence Analysis and Stochastic Extensions

Optimization techniques are at the core of many scientific and engineering disciplines. The steepest descent methods play a foundational role in this area. In this paper we studied a generalized steepest descent method on Riemannian manifolds, leveraging the geometric structure of manifolds to extend optimization techniques beyond Euclidean spaces. The convergence analysis under generalized smoothness conditions of the steepest descent method is studied along with an illustrative example. We also explore adaptive steepest descent with momentum in infinite-dimensional Hilbert spaces, focusing on the interplay of step size adaptation, momentum decay, and weak convergence properties. Also, we arrived at a convergence accuracy of $O(\frac{1}{k^2})$. Finally, studied some stochastic steepest descent under non-Gaussian noise, where bounded higher-order moments replace Gaussian assumptions, leading to a guaranteed convergence, which is illustrated by an example.

Some spectral results for certain positive operators in Hilbert Spaces

This paper investigates spectral properties of certain classes of positive operators originated from different matrices appeared in linear complementarity problem. These positive operators play a crucial role in various areas of mathematics and its applications, including operator theory, functional analysis, and quantum mechanics. Understanding their spectral behavior is essential for analyzing the dynamics and stability of systems governed by such operators. P-matrix is one of the important types of matrices appearing in linear complementarity problems. In this research, with the help of spectral results we have given a factorization for P-matrix, as the product of two non-trivial P-matrices. We also focus on elucidating spectral properties such as eigenvalues, approximate eigenvalues and spectral values associated with certain positive operators.

P-Operators on Hilbert Spaces

A real square matrix $A$ is called a P-matrix if all its principal minors are positive. Using the sign non-reversal property of matrices, the notion of P-matrix has been recently extended by Kannan and Sivakumar to infinite-dimensional Banach spaces relative to a given Schauder basis. Motivated by their work, we discuss P-operators on separable real Hilbert spaces. We also investigate P-operators relative to various orthonormal bases.
