Wide-angle high-performance photodetector empowered by angle-insensitive Tamm plasmon polariton

Tamm plasmon-polaritons (TPPs) - optical modes localized at the interface between a metal and a photonic crystal (PhC) - offer a versatile platform for confining light in planar optoelectronic devices. However, their implementation in angle-sensitive applications such as photodetectors and solar cells is hindered by strong angular dispersion of light. In this work, we propose a strategy to overcome this limitation by tailoring the dispersive properties of a PhC through the integration of hyperbolic metamaterials (HMMs). Using the transfer matrix method and effective medium theory, we demonstrate that the HMM exhibits type-I hyperbolic dispersion in the telecommunication wavelength range. This enables a photonic bandgap whose angular dependence compensates for the intrinsic blue shift of the TPP mode, effectively anchoring the resonance at 1550 nm over a broad range of incidence angles. Device performance is evaluated using the Fowler internal photoemission model, yielding a normal-incidence responsivity of 17.5 mA/W. Notably, for TM-polarized light, the responsivity decreases by only 10% at a 60 degree incidence angle - a substantial improvement over conventional all-dielectric PhC structures, which exhibit a degradation exceeding 86%. Our findings establish HMM-engineered TPPs as a promising platform for wide-angle high-performance photodetectors and open new directions for dispersion engineering in active plasmonic and optoelectronic devices.

Tunable Tamm plasmon polariton based planar hot-electron photodetector from O- to U- telecommunication band

Developing tunable photodetectors that can operate over a wide range of wavelengths and integrating them into integrated circuits is a significant challenge in today's technology. These devices must be miniaturized, inexpensive, and easily manufactured. To address this challenge, we propose the development of a tunable planar hot-electron photodetector based on Tamm plasmon polariton. The tuning of the operational wavelength is achieved by incorporation of a material with a phase transition, Sb2S3, into Tamm plasmon polariton based structure. This allows for tuning of the detection wavelength over a broad range, encompassing all bands of the telecommunications spectrum.

Electrically controlled laser generation in a photonic crystal - liquid crystal - metal microcavity

A comprehensive approach for simulating lasing dynamics in a liquid crystal based laser is presented. The approach takes into account the transformation of the liquid crystal structure caused by applied voltage. In particular, it allows us to explicitly account for a resonant mode frequency shift in the laser equations. The laser dynamic is described by a set of coupled non-linear differential equations for dye polarizations, population densities and the electromagnetic fields. The proposed model is applied to a photonic crystal$-$metal microcavity filled with a resonant nematic liquid crystal layer doped with a dye. The calculated lasing spectra governed by external electric field are verified in comparison with measured spectra.

Two-dimensional dynamic beam steering by Tamm plasmon polariton

The dynamic steering of a beam reflected from a photonic structure supporting Tamm plasmon polariton is demonstrated. The phase and amplitude of the reflected wave are adjusted by modulating the refractive index of a transparent conductive oxide layer by applying a bias voltage. It is shown that the proposed design allows for two-dimensional beam steering by deflecting the light beam along the polar and azimuthal angles.

Enhanced light absorption in Tamm metasurface with a bound state in the continuum

We consider light absorption in a germanium grating placed on top of photonic-crystalline substrate. Such a system supports an optical Tamm state decoupled from the continuous spectrum with its frequency within the photonic band gap. We have demonstrated that application of the Tamm state makes in possible to engineer extremely narrow absorber which provides a 100% absorption in a semiconductor grating in the critical coupling regime. The proposed design may be used at both normal and oblique incidence at the telecom wavelength.

Model of the Tamm plasmon polariton based solar cell

A model of an organic solar cell based on a Tamm plasmon polariton localized at the interface between a photonic crystal and a photosensitive layer with an embedded square or hexagonal plasmonic array has been proposed. The spectral properties of the structures have been investigated in the framework of the temporal coupled mode theory and confirmed by the transfer matrix method. It has been shown that the conjugation of a photonic crystal with a photosensitive layer leads to the excitation of a Tamm plasmon polariton at the interface between them and, consequently, to an increase in the integral absorption by 12% as compared with a planar solar cell without a photonic crystal.

Critical coupling vortex with grating-induced high quality optical Tamm states

We investigate optical Tamm states supported by a dielectric grating placed on top of a distributed Bragg reflector. It is found that under certain conditions the Tamm state may become a bound state in the continuum. The bound state, in its turn, induces the effect of critical coupling with reflectance amplitude reaching an exact zero. We demonstrate that the critical coupling point is located in the core of a vortex of the reflection amplitude gradient in space of wavelength and angle of incidence. The emergence of the vortex is explained by the coupled mode theory.

Hybrid modes in Al nanoparticles arrays

The mechanisms of coupling between the lattice modes of a two-dimensional (2D) array consisting of Al nanoparticles and the localized modes of individual Al nanoparticles have been studied in detail. The results have been obtained employing the finite-difference time-domain method (FDTD) and the generalized Mie theory. It was shown that interactions of single particles with 2D lattice modes significantly change the extinction spectra depending on the particle radius and the lattice period. The Rayleigh anomalies of higher orders contribute to formation of hybrid modes resulting in increase of the extinction efficiency in short wavelength range of the spectrum. It is shown that high intensity magnetic modes are excited in aluminum nanoparticles arrays. The patterns of spatial electromagnetic field distribution at the frequencies of hybrid modes have been studied. We note that comprehensive understanding the mode coupling mechanisms in arrays paves the way for engineering different types of modern photonic devices with controllable optical properties.

Chiral Optical Tamm States at the Interface between a Cholesteric and an All-Dielectric Polarization-Preserving Anisotropic Mirror

The chiral optical Tamm state is a new localized state of light at the interface between a polarization-preserving anisotropic mirror and an optically chiral medium such as a cholesteric liquid crystal. In this study the metal-free polarization-preserving mirror is used for efficient resonance control. We stress the advantage of the all-dielectric structure in obtaining high Q factor. The light is localized near the interface and the field decreases exponentially with the distance from the interface. The penetration of the field into the chiral medium is virtually blocked at wavelengths corresponding to the photonic band gap and close to the pitch of the helix. The polarization-preserving mirror has another photonic band gap as well. Our analytics agrees well with precise calculations, enabling intelligent design for laser and sensing applications.
