Light rings and optical appearances of naked singularities, solitons, and black holes in beyond Horndeski gravity

We investigate the geodesic structure and optical appearance of compact objects with primary scalar hair in shift- and parity-symmetric beyond Horndeski gravity. The analytic solution considered here depends on a theory parameter and a dimensionless mass parameter \cite{Bakopoulos:2023sdm}. For a fixed theory parameter, varying the mass traces a family of static spacetimes that can interpolate between timelike naked singularities, regular solitons, regular black holes, Reissner-Nordström-like black holes, multi-horizon black holes, and Schwarzschild-like black holes. We classify these branches by their horizon structure and analyze null and timelike geodesics, focusing on light rings, innermost stable circular orbits, and static spheres. We then compute thin-disk optical images by ray tracing. We find that the number of horizons is not directly encoded in the image: horizonless objects can show shadow-like central depressions, while multi-horizon black holes can closely resemble single-horizon black holes when their exterior light ring and disk structures are similar. Thus, the optical appearance is governed mainly by the photon potential and the disk inner edge, with the deeper horizon structure leaving only an indirect imprint. Quantitative radial-profile diagnostics confirm that the degeneracy is mainly morphological: the profiles differ at fixed impact parameter, but become much closer after rescaling by the critical impact parameter. These results provide a concrete example of how distinct compact object branches in beyond Horndeski gravity can share similar observational signatures.

Deflection of Light by a Rotating Black Hole Surrounded by "Quintessence"

We present a detailed analysis of a rotating black hole surrounded by "quintessence". This solution represents a fluid with a constant equation of state, $w$, which can for example describe an effective warm dark matter fluid around a black hole. We clarify the conditions for the existence of such a solution and study its structure by analyzing the existence of horizons as well as the extremal case. We show that the deflection angle produced by the black hole depends on the parameters $(c,w)$ which need to obey the condition $cw<0$ because of the weak energy condition, where $c$ is an additional parameter describing the hair of the black hole. In this context, we found that for $w\simeq 0.1$ (consistent with warm dark matter) and $c<0$, the deviation angle is larger than that in the Kerr spacetime for direct and retrograde orbits. We also derive an exact solution in the case of $w=-1/3$.

Strong lensing and Observables around 5D Myers-Perry black hole spacetime

We study the motion of massless test particles in a five dimensional (5D) Myers-Perry black hole spacetime with two spin parameters. The behaviour of the effective potential in view of different values of black hole parameters is discussed in the equatorial plane. The frequency shift of photons is calculated which is found to depend on the spin parameter of black hole and the observed redshift is discussed accordingly. The deflection angle and the strong deflection limit coefficients are also calculated and their behaviour with the spin parameters is analysed in detail. It is observed that the behaviour of both deflection angle and strong field coefficient differs from Kerr black hole spacetime in four dimensions (4D) in General Relativity (GR) which is mainly due to the presence of two spin parameters in higher dimension.

Bending angle of light in equatorial plane of Kerr-Sen Black Hole

We study the gravitational lensing by a Kerr-Sen Black Hole arising in heterotic string theory. A closed form expression for the bending angle of light in equatorial plane of Kerr-Sen Black Hole is derived as a function of impact parameter, spin and charge of the Black Hole. Results obtained are also compared with the corresponding cases of Kerr Black Hole in general relativity. It is observed that charge parameter behaves qualitatively similar as the spin parameter for photons travelling in direct orbits while behaves differently for photons in retrograde orbits around Black Hole. As the numerical value of the Black Hole charge increases, bending angle becomes larger in strong field limit. Further it is observed that this effect is more pronounced in case of direct orbits in comparison to the retro orbits. For both the direct and retro motion, the bending angle exceeds 2π, which in turn results in multiple loops and formation of relativistic images.

Geodesic Flows in a Charged Black Hole Spacetime with Quintessence

We investigate the evolution of timelike geodesic congruences, in the background of a charged black hole spacetime surrounded with quintessence. The Raychaudhuri equations for three kinematical quantities namely the expansion scalar, shear and rotation along the geodesic flows in such spacetime are obtained and solved numerically. We have also analysed both the weak and the strong energy conditions for the focusing of timelike geodesic congruences. The effect of the normalisation constant and equation of state parameter on the evolution of the expansion scalar is discussed, for the congruences with and without an initial shear and rotation. It is observed that there always exists a critical value of the initial expansion below which we have focusing with smaller values of the normalisation constant and equation of state parameter. As the corresponding values of both of these parameters are increased, no geodesic focusing is observed. The results obtained are then compared with those of the Reissener Nordtrom and Schwarzschild black hole spacetimes as well as their de-Sitter black hole analouges accordingly.

Null Geodesics and Red-Blue Shifts of Photons Emitted from Geodesic Particles Around a Non-Commutative Black Hole Spacetime

We investigate the geodesic motion of massless test particles in the background of a noncommutative geometry inspired Schwarzschild black hole. The behaviour of effective potential is analysed in the equatorial plane and the possible motions of massless particles (i.e. photons) for different values of impact parameter are discussed accordingly. We have also calculated the frequency shift of photons in this spacetime. Further, the mass parameter of a non-commutative inspired Schwarzschild black hole is computed in terms of the measurable redshift of photons emitted by massive particles moving along circular geodesics in equatorial plane. It is observed that the the gravitational field of a non-commutative inspired Schwarzschild black hole is more attractive than the Schwarzschild black hole in General Relativity.

Null Geodesics and Observables around Kerr-Sen Black Hole

We investigate the geodesic motion in the background of Kerr-Sen Black Hole arising in the heterotic string theory. The nature of effective potential is discussed in radial as well as latitudinal direction. A special class of spherical photon orbits is obtained along with the expression for the turning point for radial photons. Dependence of photon motion within this class of solution is discussed explicitly in view of the different Black Hole parameters. We have discussed the allowed regions for geodesic motion of massless test particles around Kerr- Sen Black Hole in more generalised way by including non-equatorial motion of the photons into the account. The conditions for different types of possible orbits are discussed with specific parameter values along with the corresponding orbit structure. No terminating orbits are possible for photons due to non-zero Black Hole charge. Observables on the angular plane (viz. bending of light and perihelion precession for massive test particles) are analysed as special cases. We have also calculated the rotation and mass parameters for Kerr-Sen Black Hole in terms of the red/blue shifts of the photons in circular and equatorial orbits emitted by the massive test particles which represent stars or other probable sources of photons.

Null Geodesics in a Magnetically Charged Stringy Black Hole Spacetime

We study the geodesic motion of massless test particles in the background of a magnetic charged black hole spacetime in four dimensions in dilaton-Maxwell gravity. The behaviour of effective potential in view of the different values of black hole parameters is analysed in the equatorial plane. The possible orbits for null geodesics are also discussed in detail in view of the different values of the impact parameter. We have also calculated the frequency shift of photons in this spacetime. The results obtained are then compared with those for the electrically charged stringy black hole spacetime and the Schwarzschild black hole spacetime. It is observed that there exists no stable circular orbit outside the event horizon for massless test particles.

Geodesic motion in R- charged black hole space-times

We study the geodesic motion of massive and massless test particles in the background of a particular class of multiple charge black holes in gauged supergravity theories in D = 4. We have analysed the horizon structure along with the nature of the effective potentials for the case of four equal charges. In view of the corresponding effective potentials, we have discussed all the possible orbits in detail for different values of energy and angular momentum of the incoming test particles. The periods for one complete revolution of circular orbits and the advance of perihelion of the planetary orbit have also been investigated in greater detail for massive test particles. We have also discussed the time period of unstable circular motion and cone of avoidance of massless test particles in detail. All the corresponding results obtained for massive and massless test particles are then compared accordingly.

Geodesic flows around charged black holes in two dimensions

We study the evolution of timelike geodesics for two dimensional black hole spacetimes arising in string theory and general theory of relativity by solving the Raychaudhuri equation for expansion scalar as an initial value problem. The possibility of geodesic focusing/defocusing is then examined accordingly with different settings of black hole parameters. In view of the geodesic focusing/defocusing, the critical value of expansion scalar is also calculated in each case. The effect of the charge and the cosmological constant on the evolution of expansion scalar for timelike geodesics is discussed in detail.

Geodesic Motion in Schwarzschild Spacetime Surrounded by Quintessence

We study the time-like geodesic congruences, in the space-time geometry of a Schwarzschild black hole surrounded by quintessence. The nature of effective potential along with the structure of the possible orbits for test particles in view of the different values of quintessence parameter are analysed in detail. %wherever possible it is done analytically otherwise numerically. An increase in quintessence parameter is seen to set the particles from farther distance into motion around black hole. The effect of quintessence parameter is investigated analytically wherever possible otherwise we perform the numerical analysis to probe the structure of possible orbits. It is observed that there exist a number of different possible orbits for a test particle in case of non-radial geodesics, such as circular (stable as well as unstable) bound orbits, radially plunge and fly-by orbits, whereas no bound orbits exist in case of radial geodesics. Using the geodesic deviation equations, we obtain the corresponding deviation vector and find that the quintessence assists the divergence of neighbouring geodesics in both the radial and transverse directions.

Geodesic Motion in a Charged 2D Stringy Blackhole Spacetime

We study the timelike geodesics and geodesic deviation for a two-dimensional stringy blackhole spacetime in Schwarzschild gauge. We have analyzed the properties of effective potential along with the structure of the possible orbits for test particles with different settings of blackhole parameters. The exactly solvable geodesic deviation equation is used to obtain corresponding deviation vector. The nature of deviation and tidal force is also examined in view of the behavior of corresponding deviation vector. The results are also compared with an another two-dimensional stringy blackhole spacetime.
