Spacetime from Entanglement: The Emergence of Metric, Gravity, or Topology

In AdS/CFT, one often finds claims along the lines that ``spacetime emerges from entanglement." This paper argues that behind these general statements hide three distinct emergence claims about, respectively, metric, gravitational dynamics, and topological connectivity. Thus, despite being advertised with the same terminology, these results are not about the same spatiotemporal aspects. They can therefore not just be grouped as evidence for one unanimous conclusion, though they do point in similar directions. The paper also investigates whether the three emergence claims satisfy two of the necessary conditions for emergence: Determination and novelty. The paper argues that none of the emergence claims satisfies the determination condition: More than entanglement is needed to furnish the emergence basis. Besides entanglement, the emergence basis for the bulk metric must include the induced metric on the boundary. Thus, this claim might not satisfy the novelty condition for emergence that the emergent should be novel as compared to the emergence basis. Likewise, the emergence basis for topological connectivity seems to include connectivity whereby this emergence claim is also questionable. The paper concludes that only gravitational dynamics is novel compared to the fully furnished emergence basis.

Holography without holography: How to turn inter-representational into intra-theoretical relations in AdS/CFT

We show by means of the AdS/CFT correspondence in the context of quantum gravity how inter-representational relations - loosely speaking relations among different equivalent representations of one and the same physics - can play out as a tool for intra-theoretical developments and thus boost theory development in the context of discovery. More precisely, we first show that, as a duality, the AdS/CFT correspondence cannot in itself testify to the quantum origin of gravity (though it may be utilized for this purpose). We then establish through two case studies from emergent gravity (Jacobson (2016), Verlinde (2017)) that the holographic AdS/CFT correspondence can, however, still excel as a guiding principle towards the quantum origin of gravity (similar in nature to quantisation).

The multiple realizability of general relativity in quantum gravity

Must a theory of quantum gravity have some truth to it if it can recover general relativity in some limit of the theory? This paper answers this question in the negative by indicating that general relativity is multiply realizable in quantum gravity. The argument is inspired by spacetime functionalism - multiple realizability being a central tenet of functionalism - and proceeds via three case studies: induced gravity, thermodynamic gravity, and entanglement gravity. In these, general relativity in the form of the Einstein field equations can be recovered from elements that are either manifestly multiply realizable or at least of the generic nature that is suggestive of functions. If general relativity, as argued here, can inherit this multiple realizability, then a theory of quantum gravity can recover general relativity while being completely wrong about the posited microstructure. As a consequence, the recovery of general relativity cannot serve as the ultimate arbiter that decides which theory of quantum gravity that is worthy of pursuit, even though it is of course not irrelevant either qua quantum gravity. Thus, the recovery of general relativity in string theory, for instance, does not guarantee that the stringy account of the world is on the right track; despite sentiments to the contrary among string theorists.

A Review of the Holographic Relation between Linearized Gravity and the First Law of Entanglement Entropy

This thesis reviews the conjectured holographic relation between entanglement and gravity due to Mark van Raamsdonk and collaborators. It is accounted how the linearized Einstein equations both with and without matter in a d+1-dimensional AdS background can be derived from the first law of entanglement entropy in a d-dimensional CFT. This derivation builds on the Ryu-Takayanagi formula that relates entanglement entropy for CFT subsystems to extremal surfaces in the AdS bulk. The relation between gravity and entanglement is also corroborated by a qualitative investigation of the duality between the thermofield double state and the maximally extended AdS/Schwarzschild black hole using the Bekenstein-Hawking formula. Furthermore, this qualitative argument is generalized to generic CFT states with a classical spacetime dual using the Ryu-Takayanagi. The thesis also reviews the most relevant prerequisites for this holographic relation between gravity and entanglement: Anti-de Sitter spacetime, entanglement and entanglement entropy, gauge/gravity duality, the Ryu-Takayanagi formula, and linearized gravity.
