Control Barrier Functions for the Full Class of Signal Temporal Logic Tasks using Spatiotemporal Tubes

This paper introduces a new framework for synthesizing time-varying control barrier functions (TV-CBFs) for general Signal Temporal Logic (STL) specifications using spatiotemporal tubes (STT). We first formulate the STT synthesis as a robust optimization problem (ROP) and solve it through a scenario optimization problem (SOP), providing formal guarantees that the resulting tubes capture the given STL specifications. These STTs are then used to construct TV-CBFs, ensuring that under any control law rendering them invariant, the system satisfies the STL tasks. We demonstrate the framework through case studies on a differential-drive mobile robot and a quadrotor, and provide a comparative analysis showing improved efficiency over existing approaches.

Smooth Spatiotemporal Tube Synthesis for Prescribed-Time Reach-Avoid-Stay Control

In this work, we address the issue of controller synthesis for a control-affine nonlinear system to meet prescribed time reach-avoid-stay specifications. Our goal is to improve upon previous methods based on spatiotemporal tubes (STTs) by eliminating the need for circumvent functions, which often lead to abrupt tube modifications and high control effort. We propose an adaptive framework that constructs smooth STTs around static unsafe sets, enabling continuous avoidance while guiding the system toward the target within the prescribed time. A closed-form, approximation-free control law is derived to ensure the system trajectory remains within the tube and satisfies the RAS task. The effectiveness of the proposed approach is demonstrated through a case study, showing a significant reduction in control effort compared to prior methods.

Spatiotemporal Tubes for Temporal Reach-Avoid-Stay Tasks in Unknown Systems

The paper considers the controller synthesis problem for general MIMO systems with unknown dynamics, aiming to fulfill the temporal reach-avoid-stay task, where the unsafe regions are time-dependent, and the target must be reached within a specified time frame. The primary aim of the paper is to construct the spatiotemporal tube (STT) using a sampling-based approach and thereby devise a closed-form approximation-free control strategy to ensure that system trajectory reaches the target set while avoiding time-dependent unsafe sets. The proposed scheme utilizes a novel method involving STTs to provide controllers that guarantee both system safety and reachability. In our sampling-based framework, we translate the requirements of STTs into a Robust optimization program (ROP). To address the infeasibility of ROP caused by infinite constraints, we utilize the sampling-based Scenario optimization program (SOP). Subsequently, we solve the SOP to generate the tube and closed-form controller for an unknown system, ensuring the temporal reach-avoid-stay specification. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed approach is demonstrated through three case studies: an omnidirectional robot, a SCARA manipulator, and a magnetic levitation system.

Maximally Resilient Controllers under Temporal Logic Specifications

In this paper, we consider the notion of resilience of a dynamical system, defined by the maximum disturbance a controlled dynamical system can withstand while satisfying given temporal logic specifications. Given a dynamical system and a specification, the objective is to synthesize the controller such that the closed-loop system satisfies this specification while maximizing its resilience. The problem is formulated as a robust optimization program where the objective is to compute the maximum resilience while simultaneously synthesizing the corresponding controller parameters. For linear systems and linear controllers, exact solutions are provided for the class of time-varying polytopic specifications. For the case of nonlinear systems, nonlinear controllers and more general specifications, we leverage tools from the scenario optimization approach, offering a probabilistic guarantee of the solution as well as computational feasibility. Different case studies are presented to illustrate the theoretical results.

Reach-Avoid-Stay-Collision-Avoidance Negotiation Framework for Multi-Agent Systems via Spatiotemporal Tubes

This study presents a multi-agent negotiation-based framework to obtain collision-free paths while performing prescribed-time reach-avoid-stay (RAS) tasks for agents with unknown dynamics and bounded disturbance. By employing spatiotemporal tubes to generate time-varying state constraints, we ensure that all agents adhere to RAS specifications using synthesized controllers. To prevent inter-agent collisions, a negotiation mechanism is proposed where successful negotiations result in spatiotemporal tubes for each agent fulfilling desired tasks. This approach results in a completely distributed, approximation-free control law for each agent. The effectiveness of this mechanism was validated through simulations of multi-agent robot navigation and drone navigation tasks involving prescribed-time RAS specifications and collision avoidance.

Control Barrier Functions for Prescribed-time Reach-Avoid-Stay Tasks using Spatiotemporal Tubes

Prescribed-time reach-avoid-stay (PT-RAS) specifications are crucial in applications requiring precise timing, state constraints, and safety guarantees. While control carrier functions (CBFs) have emerged as a promising approach, providing formal guarantees of safety, constructing CBFs that satisfy PT-RAS specifications remains challenging. In this paper, we present a novel approach using a spatiotemporal tubes (STTs) framework to construct CBFs for PT-RAS tasks. The STT framework allows for the systematic design of CBFs that dynamically manage both spatial and temporal constraints, ensuring the system remains within a safe operational envelope while achieving the desired temporal objectives. The proposed method is validated with two case studies: temporal motion planning of an omnidirectional robot and temporal waypoint navigation of a drone with obstacles, using higher-order CBFs.

Spatiotemporal Tubes based Controller Synthesis against Omega-Regular Specifications for Unknown Systems

This paper provides a discretization-free solution to the synthesis of approx-imation-free closed-form controllers for unknown nonlinear systems to enforce complex properties expressed by $ω$-regular languages, as recognized by Non-deterministic Büchi Automata (NBA). In order to solve this problem, we first decompose NBA into a sequence of reach-avoid problems, which are solved using the Spatiotemporal Tubes (STT) approach. Controllers for each reach-avoid task are then integrated into a hybrid policy that ensures the fulfillment of the desired $ω$-regular properties. We validate our method through omnidirectional robot navigation and manipulator control case studies.

RRT* Based Optimal Trajectory Generation with Linear Temporal Logic Specifications under Kinodynamic Constraints

In this paper, we present a novel RRT*-based strategy for generating kinodynamically feasible paths that satisfy temporal logic specifications. Our approach integrates a robustness metric for Linear Temporal Logics (LTL) with the system's motion constraints, ensuring that the resulting trajectories are both optimal and executable. We introduce a cost function that recursively computes the robustness of temporal logic specifications while penalizing time and control effort, striking a balance between path feasibility and logical correctness. We validate our approach with simulations and real-world experiments in complex environments, demonstrating its effectiveness in producing robust and practical motion plans. This work represents a significant step towards expanding the applicability of motion planning algorithms to more complex, real-world scenarios.

Barrier Function-based Distributed Symbolic Controller for Multi-Agent Systems

Because of the scalability issues associated with the symbolic controller synthesis approach, employing it in a multi-agent system (MAS) framework becomes difficult. In this paper, we present a novel approach for synthesizing distributed symbolic controllers for MAS, that enforces a local Linear Temporal Logic (LTL) specification on each agent and global safety specifications on the MAS, in a computationally efficient manner by leveraging the concept of control barrier functions (CBF). In addition, we also provide an analysis on the effect of the CBF parameters on the conservatism introduced by our proposed approach in the size and domain of the synthesized controller. The effectiveness of this approach is demonstrated through a comparison with the conventional monolithic symbolic control, using simulation as well as hardware demonstrations.

An anthropomorphic continuum robotic neck actuated by SMA spring-based multipennate muscle architecture

This work presents a novel Shape Memory Alloy spring actuated continuum robotic neck that derives inspiration from pennate muscle architecture. The proposed design has 2DOF, and experimental studies reveal that the designed joint can replicate the human head's anthropomorphic range of motion. We enumerate the analytical modelling for SMA actuators and the kinematic model of the proposed design configuration. A series of experiments were conducted to assess the performance of the anthropomorphic neck by measuring the range of motion with varying input currents. Furthermore, the experiments were conducted to validate the analytical model of the SMA Multiphysics and the continuum backbone. The existing humanoid necks have been powered by conventional actuators that have relatively low energy efficiency and are prone to wear. The current research envisages application of nonconventional actuator such as SMA springs with specific geometric configuration yielding high power to weight ratio that delivers smooth motion for continuum robots as demonstrated in this present work.

Funnel-based Control for Reach-Avoid-Stay Specifications

The paper addresses the problem of controller synthesis for control-affine nonlinear systems to meet reach-avoid-stay specifications. Specifically, the goal of the research is to obtain a closed-form control law ensuring that the trajectories of the nonlinear system, reach a target set while avoiding all unsafe regions and adhering to the state-space constraints. To tackle this problem, we leverage the concept of the funnel-based control approach. Given an arbitrary unsafe region, we introduce a circumvent function that guarantees the system trajectory to steer clear of that region. Subsequently, an adaptive funnel framework is proposed based on the target, followed by the construction of a closed-form controller using the established funnel function, enforcing the reach-avoid-stay specifications. To demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed funnel-based control approach, a series of simulation experiments have been carried out.
