Dynamical-state switching controls active microrod navigation in porous media

Adaptive search and travel strategies enable biological swimmers to explore complex environments, but remain difficult to encode in minimal synthetic microswimmers. Here, we unveil multiple dynamical and orientational states of rod-like Janus microswimmers actuated via electric fields: planar active, oriented chiral and persistent rods. We discover a hidden dynamical state after pre-orienting them, which allows us to switch on demand from strong chiral to persistent motion. We harness this phenomenological orientation and chirality switch for exploration in microstructured porous arrays. Here, strong chirality promotes local scanning but drives circular trapping and poor net displacement, whereas the pre-aligned dynamical state enables efficient obstacle sorting, and trap escape. Comparing experiments with simulations of active Brownian particles in the very same experimentally-extracted obstacle geometries, we quantify navigation efficiency via first-passage time statistics, revealing how chirality tuning optimizes the trade-off between local exploration and long-range transport.

The cost of speed: Time-optimal thermal control of trapped Brownian particles

A thermal analogue of the classical brachistochrone problem, which minimizes the connection time between two equilibrium states of harmonically confined Brownian particles, has recently been solved theoretically. Here we report its experimental realization using two optically trapped microparticles subjected to a bang-bang effective temperature protocol. Despite their distinct relaxation times, both degrees of freedom are steered to their respective equilibrium states simultaneously in a finite minimal time. We provide a complete time-resolved characterization of the nonequilibrium dynamics through the evolution of the position variances and the entropy production within the framework of stochastic thermodynamics, enabling a quantitative comparison with direct relaxation and a suboptimal protocol. In addition, we employ information-geometric tools -- recently referred to as thermal kinematics -- to track the system's path in state space with a single dynamical quantity. Our results show that faster equilibration requires a larger entropy production and an increased thermodynamic length, revealing a direct trade-off between temporal optimality and thermodynamic cost in multidimensional stochastic systems driven by a single intensive control parameter.

Hybrid dielectrophoretic-optical trap for microparticles in aqueous suspension

We demonstrate that a set of microfabricated electrodes can be coupled to a commercial optical tweezers device, implementing a hybrid electro-optical trap with multiple functionalities to manipulate micro/nanoparticles in suspension. Our design allows us to simultaneously trap tens of particles in a single potential well generated in the low electric field region of the electrode arrangement, taking advantage of negative dielectrophoresis. Together with the optical tweezers, we show that the hybrid scheme allows enhanced manipulation capabilities, including controlled loading and accumulation in the dielectrophoretic trap from the optical tweezers, selectivity, and tracking of the individual trajectories of trapped particles.
