Multidimensional dark space and its underlying symmetries: towards dissipation-protected qubits

Quantum systems are always subject to interactions with an environment, typically resulting in decoherence and distortion of quantum correlations. It has been recently shown that a controlled interaction with the environment may actually help to create a state, dubbed as {\em ``dark''}, which is immune to decoherence. To encode quantum information in the dark states, they need to span a space with a dimensionality larger than one, so different orthogonal states act as a computational basis. We devise a symmetry-based conceptual framework to engineer such degenerate dark spaces (DDS), protected from decoherence by the environment. We illustrate this construction with a model protocol, inspired by the fractional quantum Hall effect, where the DDS basis is isomorphic to a set of degenerate Laughlin states. The long-time steady state of our driven-dissipative model exhibits thus all the characteristics of degenerate vacua of a unitary topological system. This approach offers new possibilities for storing, protecting and manipulating quantum information in open systems.

Fractional topological insulator precursors in spin-orbit fermion ladders

We study precursor states of fractional topological insulators (FTIs) in interacting fermionic ladders with spin-orbit coupling. Within a microscopically motivated bosonization approach, we investigate different competing phases depending on same-spin and interspin interactions at fractional effective filling $ν=1/3$ per spin. In the spin-decoupled limit, we find that strong repulsive interactions of already moderate range may lead to a partially gapped state with two time-reversed copies of a quasi-one dimensional Laughlin phase. This FTI precursor competes with an interleg partially gapped phase displaying quasi long-range density wave order, however it may be stabilized if interactions have suitable anisotropy, or are sufficiently near SU($2$) symmetry, in leg space. When the FTI phase is present, it is moderately robust to small interspin interactions; these introduce competing partially gapped phases of orbital antiferromagnetic and bond density wave character. Performing a strong coupling analysis of the FTI precursor regime, we find that the main effect of interspin interactions is to induce correlated quasiparticle backscattering between the precursor FTI edge modes. Although this process competes with the topological phase, we show, by considering an array of ladders, that its influence may disappear upon approaching the two dimensional case. Considering time-reversal symmetry breaking perturbations, we also describe a protocol that adiabatically pumps $1/6$ charge per half-cycle, thus providing a quantized FTI signature arising already in the single ladder regime.

Interplay between intrinsic and emergent topological protection on interacting helical modes

The interplay between topology and interactions on the edge of a two dimensional topological insulator with time reversal symmetry is studied. We consider a simple non-interacting system of three helical channels with an inherent $\mathbb{Z}_{2}$ topological protection, and hence a zero-temperature conductance of $G=e^2/h$. We show that when interactions are added to the model, the ground state exhibits two different phases as function of the interaction parameters. One of these phases is a trivial insulator at zero temperature, as the symmetry protecting the non-interacting topological phase is spontaneously broken. In this phase, there is zero conductance $G=0$ at zero-temperature. The other phase displays enhanced topological properties, with the neutral sector described by a massive version of $\mathbb{Z}_{3}$ parafermions. In this phase, the system at low energies displays an emergent $\mathbb{Z}_3$ symmetry, which is not present in the lattice model, and has a topologically protected zero-temperature conductance of $G=3e^2/h$. This state is an example of a dynamically enhanced symmetry protected topological state.

Phase diagram of two interacting helical states

We consider two coupled time reversal invariant helical edge modes of the same helicity, such as would occur on two stacked quantum spin Hall insulators. In the presence of interaction, the low energy physics is described by two collective modes, one corresponding to the total current flowing around the edge and the other one describing relative fluctuations between the two edges. We find that quite generically, the relative mode becomes gapped at low temperatures, but only when tunneling between the two helical modes is non-zero. There are two distinct possibilities for the gapped state depending on the relative size of different interactions. If the intra-edge interaction is stronger than the inter-edge interaction, the state is characterised as a spin-nematic phase. However in the opposite limit, when the interaction between the helical edge modes is strong compared to the interaction within each mode, a spin-density wave forms, with emergent topological properties. Firstly, the gap protects the conducting phase against localization by weak nonmagnetic impurities; and secondly the protected phase hosts localized zero modes on ends of the edge that may be created by sufficiently strong non-magnetic impurities.

Supersymmetry in the Fractional Quantum Hall Regime

Supersymmetry (SUSY) is a symmetry transforming bosons to fermions and vice versa. Indications of its existence have been extensively sought after in high-energy experiments. However, signatures of SUSY have yet to be detected. In this manuscript we propose a condensed matter realization of SUSY on the edge of a Read-Rezayi quantum Hall state, given by filling factors of the form $ν=\frac{k}{k+2}$, where $k$ is an integer. As we show, this strongly interacting state exhibits an $\mathcal{N}=2$ SUSY. This allows us to use a topological invariant - the Witten index - defined specifically for supersymmetric theories, to count the difference between the number of bosonic and fermionic zero-modes in a circular edge. In our system, we argue that the edge hosts $k+1$ protected zero-modes. We further discuss the stability of SUSY with respect to generic perturbations, and find that much of the above results remain unchanged. In particular, these results directly apply to the well-established $ν=1/3$ Laughlin state, in which case SUSY is a highly robust property of the edge theory. These results unveil a hidden topological structure on the long-studied Read-Rezayi states.

Interaction induced topological protection in one-dimensional conductors

We discuss two one-dimensional model systems -- the first is a single channel quantum wire with Ising anisotropy, while the second is two coupled helical edge states. We show that the two models are governed by the same low energy effective field theory, and interactions drive both systems to exhibit phases which are metallic, but with all single particle excitations gapped. We show that such states may be either topological or trivial; in the former case, the system demonstrates gapless end states, and insensitivity to disorder.

Negativity in the Generalized Valence Bond Solid State

Using a graphical presentation of the spin $S$ one dimensional Valence Bond Solid (VBS) state, based on the representation theory of the $SU(2)$ Lie-algebra of spins, we compute the spectrum of a mixed state reduced density matrix. This mixed state of two blocks of spins $A$ and $B$ is obtained by tracing out the spins outside $A$ and $B$, in the pure VBS state density matrix. We find in particular that the negativity of the mixed state is non-zero only for adjacent subsystems. The method introduced here can be generalized to the computation of entanglement properties in Levin-Wen models, that possess a similar algebraic structure to the VBS state in the groundstate.

Bulk Entanglement Spectrum in Gapped Spin Ladders

We study the bulk entanglement of a series of gapped ground states of spin ladders, representative of the Haldane phase. These ground states of spin $S/2$ ladders generalize the valence bond solid ground state. In the case of spin 1/2 ladders, we study a generalization of the Affleck-Kennedy-Lieb-Tasaki and Nersesyan-Tsvelik states and fully characterize the bulk entanglement Hamiltonian. In the case of general spin $S$ we argue that in the Haldane phase the bulk entanglement spectrum of a half integer ladder is either gapless or possess a degenerate ground state. For ladders with integer valued spin particles, the generic bulk entanglement spectrum should have an entanglement gap. Finally, we give an example of a series of trivial states of higher spin $S>1$ in which the bulk entanglement Hamiltonian is critical, signaling that the relation between topological states and a critical bulk entanglement Hamiltonian is not unique to topological systems.

Entanglement of a alternating bipartition in spin chains: Relation with classical integrable models

We study the entanglement properties of a class of ground states defined by matrix product states, which are generalizations of the valence bond solid (VBS) state in one dimension. It is shown that the transfer matrix of these states can be related to representations of the Temperley-Lieb algebra, allowing an exact computation of Renyi entropy. For an alternating bipartition, we find that the Renyi entropy can be mapped to an eight vertex model partition function on a rotated lattice. We also show that for the VBS state, the Renyi entropy of the alternating partition is described by a critical field theory with central charge $c=1$. The generalization to $SU(n)$ VBS and its connection with a dimerization transition in the entanglement Hamiltonian is discussed.

Interaction Protected Topological Insulators with Time Reversal Symmetry

Anderson's localization on the edge of two dimensional time reversal (TR) topological insulator (TI) is studied. For the non-interacting case the topological protection acts accordingly to the $\mathbb{Z}_2$ classification, leading to conducting and insulating phases for odd and even fillings respectively. In the presence of repulsive interaction the phase diagram is notably changed. We show that for sufficiently strong values of the interaction the zero temperature fixed point of the TI is conducting, including the case of even fillings. We compute the boundaries of the conducting phase for various fillings and types of disorder.

Fractional Topological Insulators: from sliding Luttinger Liquids to Chern-Simons theory

The sliding Luttinger liquids (LL) approach is applied to study fractional topological insulators (FTI). We show that FTI is the low energy fixed point of the theory for realistic spin-orbit and electron-electron interaction. We find that the topological phase pertains in the presence of interaction that breaks the spin invariance and its boundaries are even extended by those terms. Finally we show that one dimensional chiral anomaly in the LL leads to the emergence of topological Chern-Simons terms in the effective gauge theory of the FTI state.

Entanglement Entropy in 2D Non-abelian Pure Gauge Theory

We compute the Entanglement Entropy (EE) of a bipartition in 2D pure non-abelian $U(N)$ gauge theory. We obtain a general expression for EE on an arbitrary Riemann surface. We find that due to area-preserving diffeomorphism symmetry EE does not depend on the size of the subsystem, but only on the number of disjoint intervals defining the bipartition. In the strong coupling limit on a torus we find that the scaling of the EE at small temperature is given by $S(T) - S(0) = O\left(\frac{m_{gap}}{T}e^{-\frac{m_{gap}}{T}}\right)$, which is similar to the scaling for the matter fields recently derived in literature. In the large $N$ limit we compute all of the Renyi entropies and identify the Douglas-Kazakov phase transition.

Bulk-Edge correspondence of entanglement spectrum in 2D spin ground states

General local spin $S$ ground states, described by a Valence Bond Solid (VBS) on a two dimensional lattice are studied. The norm of these ground states is mapped to a classical O(3) model on the same lattice. Using this quantum-to-classical mapping we obtain the partial density matrix $ρ_{A}$ associated with a subsystem ${A}$ of the original ground state. We show that the entanglement spectrum of $ρ_{\rm A}$ in a translation invariant lattice is given by the spectrum of a quantum spin chain at the boundary of region $A$, with local Heisenberg type interactions between spin 1/2 particles.

Quantum phase transition in a multicomponent anyonic Lieb-Liniger model

We study a one-dimensional multicomponent anyon model that reduces to a multicomponent Lieb-Liniger gas of impenetrable bosons (Tonks-Girardeau gas) for vanishing statistics parameter. At fixed component densities, the coordinate Bethe ansatz gives a family of quantum phase transitions at special values of the statistics parameter. We show that the ground state energy changes extensively between different phases. Special regimes are studied and a general classification for the transition points is given. An interpretation in terms of statistics of composite particles is proposed.

Entanglement spectra of the q-deformed Affleck-Kennedy-Lieb-Tasaki model and matrix product states

We exactly calculate the reduced density matrix of matrix product states (MPS). Our compact result enables one to perform analytic studies of entanglement in MPS. In particular, we consider the MPS ground states of two anisotropic spin chains. One is a q-deformed Affleck-Kennedy-Lieb-Tasaki (AKLT) model and the other is a general spin-1 quantum antiferromagnet with nearest-neighbor interactions. Our analysis shows how anisotropy affects entanglement on different continuous parameter manifolds. We also construct an effective boundary spin model that describes a block of spins in the ground state of the q-deformed AKLT Hamiltonian. The temperature of this effective model is given in terms of the deformation parameter q.

Entanglement spectra of q-deformed higher spin VBS states

We calculate the reduced density matrix of a block of integer spin-S's in a q-deformed valence-bond-solid (VBS) state. This matrix is diagonalized exactly for an infinitely long block in an infinitely long chain. We construct an effective Hamiltonian with the same spectrum as the logarithm of the density matrix. We also derive analytic expressions for the von Neumann and Rényi entanglement entropies. For blocks of finite length, we calculate the eigenvalues of the reduced density matrix by perturbation theory and numerical diagonalization. These results enable us to describe the effects of finite-size corrections on the entanglement spectrum and entropy in this generalized VBS model.

Entanglement of disjoint blocks in the one dimensional Spin 1 VBS

Starting with the valence bond solid (VBS) ground state of the 1D AKLT Hamiltonian, we make a partition of the system in 2 subsystems $A$ and $B$, where $A$ is a block of $L$ consecutive spins and $B$ is it's complement. In that setting we compute the partial transpose density matrix with respect to $A$, $ρ^{T_A}$. We obtain the spectrum of the transposed density matrix of the VBS pure system. Subsequently we define two disjoint blocks, $A$ and $B$ containing $L_A$ and $L_B$ spins respectively, separated by $L$ sites. Tracing away the spins which do not belong to $A\cup B$, we find an expression for the reduced density matrix of the $A$ and $B$ blocks $ρ(A,B)$. With this expression (in the thermodynamic limit), we compute the entanglement spectrum and other several entanglement measures, as the purity $P={\rm tr}(ρ(A,B)^2)$, the negativity $\mathcal{N}$, and the mutual entropy.

Negativity for two blocks in the one dimensional Spin 1 AKLT model

In this paper we compute the entanglement, as quantified by negativity, between two blocks of length $L_A$ and $L_B$, separated by $L$ sites in the one dimensional spin-1 AKLT model. We took the model with two different boundary conditions. We consider the case of $N$ spins 1 in the bulk and one spin 1/2 at each boundary which constitute an unique ground state, and the case of just spins 1, even at the end of the chain, where the degeneracy of the ground state is four. In both scenarios we made a partition consisting of two blocks $A$ and $B$, containing $L_A$ and $L_B$ sites respectively. The separation of these two blocks is $L$. In both cases we explicitly obtain the reduced density matrix of the blocks $A$ and $B$. We prove that the negativity in the first case vanishes identically for $L\geq 1$ while in the second scenario it may approach a constant value $N=1/2$ for each degenerate eigenstate depending on the way one constructs these eigenstates. However, as there is some freedom in constructing these eigenstates, vanishing entanglement is also possible in the latter case. Additionally, we also compute the entanglement between non-complementary blocks in the case of periodic boundary conditions for the spin-1 AKLT model for which there is a unique ground state. Even in this case, we find that the negativity of separated blocks of spins is zero.
