Light-by-Light Scattering and Spacetime Noncommutativity

The aim of this article is to explore a potential usability of a photon-photon self-interaction from the noncommutative quantum electrodynamics (NCQED) in the case of light-by-light scattering ($γγ\toγγ$) in ultraperipheral Pb+Pb collisions, a reaction measured recently by ATLAS and planned for future experiments in hadron-hadron colliders. We compute the total cross section from both, the full one-loop standard model (SM) and the tree-level NCQED amplitudes, in the equivalent photon approximation with impact parameters, for various noncommutative scales, $\rmΛ_{NC}$, and incoming nuclear spin-energy combinations. We find that NCQED contribution to the cross section has considerable increase at diphoton invariant mass range higher than $\rmΛ_{NC}$, while the SM contribution is strongly suppressed in such region. Our results show that the current ATLAS $\rm\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 5.02$ TeV experiment can only probe $\rmΛ_{NC}<100$ GeV region. On the other hand, future hadron-hadron collider proposals could have the potential to extend to $\rmΛ_{NC}\lesssim 300$ GeV region, making the performance of $\rm Pb+Pb(γγ)\to Pb+Pbγγ$ scattering on testing space-time noncommutativity close to that of the previously proposed photon-photon mode of linear electron-positron collider.

Inferring type and scale of noncommutativity from the PTOLEMY experiment

If neutrinos are Dirac particles and their right-handed component can be copiously produced in the early universe, then they could influence a direct observation of the cosmic neutrino background, which, most likely, will come about with the recently proposed PTOLEMY experiment. For the production mechanism of right-handed neutrinos we use a state-of-the-art version of gauge field theory deformed by the spacetime noncommutativity, to disclose by it not only the decoupling temperature for the said neutrino component, but also the otherwise hidden coupling temperature. Considering two relevant processes, the plasmon decay and the neutrino elastic scattering, we study the interplay between the structure of the noncommutativity parameter $θ^{μν}$ (type of noncommutativity) and the reheating temperature after inflation to obtain otherwise elusive upper bound on the scale of noncommutativity $Λ_{\rm NC}$. If PTOLEMY enhanced capture rate is due to spacetime noncommutativity, we verify that a nontrivial maximum upper bound on $Λ_{\rm NC}$ (a way below the Planck scale) emerges for a space-like $θ^{μν}$ and sufficiently high reheating temperature.

Spacetime Deformation Effect on the Early Universe and the PTOLEMY Experiment

Using a fully-fledged formulation of gauge field theory deformed by the spacetime noncommutativity, we study its impact on relic neutrino direct detection, as proposed recently by the PTOLEMY experiment. The noncommutative background tends to influence the propagating neutrinos by providing them with a tree-level vector-like coupling to photons, enabling thus otherwise right-handed (RH) neutrinos to be thermally produced in the early universe. Such a new component in the universe's background radiation has been switched today to the almost fully active sea of non-relativistic neutrinos, exerting consequently some impact on the capture on tritium at PTOLEMY. The peculiarities of our nonperturbative approach tend to reflect in the cosmology as well, upon the appearances of the coupling temperature, above which RH neutrinos stay permanently decoupled from thermal environment. This entails the maximal scale of noncommutativity as well, being of order of $10^{-4} M_{Pl}$, above which there is no impact whatsoever on the capture rates at PTOLEMY. The latter represents an exceptional upper bound on the scale of noncommutativity coming from phenomenology.

Equivalence and/or quantum duality of the non/supersymmetric noncommutative field theories related by the theta-exact Seiberg-Witten map

In this article we expound a discovery of the quantum equivalence/duality of U(N) noncommutative quantum field theories (NC QFT) related by the theta-exact Seiberg-Witten (SW) maps and at all orders in the perturbation theory with respect to the coupling constant. We show that this proof holds for Super Yang-Mills (SYM) theories with N=0,1,2,4$ supersymmetry. In short, Seiberg-Witten map does commute with the quantization of the U(N) NCQFT independently, with or without supersymmetry.

Photon polarization tensor on deformed spacetime: A four-photon-tadpole contribution

In this contribution to the Proceedings of the Corfu Summer Institute 2015 we present our study on photon self-interaction in the deformed U(1) gauge field theory defined via Seiberg-Witten map. We derive the theta-exact expressions for the four photon self-coupling in this theory with a large number of gauge symmetry inspired freedom parameters included. The physical effect of four photon self-coupling is accessed by its contribution to photon polarization tensor via 1-loop four-photon-tadpole-diagram. The four-photon tadpole diagram consists the same tensorial structures as the photon self-interacting bubble diagram we studied before, with however only quadratically IR divergent coefficients. We show that there exists a unique combination of gauge symmetry inspired freedoms which induces full quadratic IR divergence cancellation for arbitrary noncommutative parameter theta once the photon self-interacting bubble and tadpole diagrams are summed over.

Photon self-interaction on deformed spacetime

A novel nonlocal four-photon interaction on the deformed spacetime is derived and studied in the three selected models (I, II, III). The first two models (I, II) are obtained via two distinct second-order $θ$-exact Seiberg-Witten maps of the noncommutative U(1) gauge field strength on Moyal space. The third one (III), inspired by the manifestly gauge invariant structures emerging in the first two, due to the model generality has been constructed with a different set of freedom parameters. The physical relevancy of all models is analyzed by evaluating the four-photon-tadpole diagram, which, when combined with the bubble graph, enables us to fully consider all contributions to the one-loop photon polarization tensor. For an arbitrary noncommutative matrix theta^μν, the full quadratic IR divergence cancellation in the one-loop photon two-point function is obtained with particular combinations of Seiberg-Witten map/gauge-symmetry freedom parameters in models I and II. Finally, our model III enables complete elimination of all pathological terms in the photon polarization tensor at one-loop order if a special value for the theta matrix is chosen.

Forbidden and invisible Z boson decays in covariant theta-exact noncommutative standard model

The triple neutral gauge boson and direct U(1)_Y-neutrino interactions, being absent in ordinary field theory, can arise quite naturally in noncommutative gauge field theories. Using non-perturbative methods and a Seiberg-Witten map based covariant approach to noncommutative gauge theory, we have found theta-exact expressions for both interactions, thereby eliminating previous restrictions to low-energy phenomena. In particular we obtain for the first time the covariant, theta-exact, triple neutral gauge boson interactions within the noncommutative Standard Model gauge sector including an additional gauge-field deformation freedom. Finally we discuss implications for Z->2gamma and Z->neutrino-pair decays, and show that our results behave quite reasonably throughout all interaction energy scales.

Yukawa couplings and seesaw neutrino masses in noncommutative gauge theory

We consider Yukawa couplings in a theta-exact approach to noncommutative gauge field theory and show that both Dirac and singlet Majorana neutrino mass terms can be consistently accommodated. This shows that in fact the whole neutrino-mass extended standard model on noncommutative spacetime can the formulated in the new nonperturbative (in theta) approach which eliminates the previous restriction of Seiberg-Witten map based theories to low-energy phenomena. Spacetime noncommutativity induced couplings between neutrinos and photons as well as Z-bosons appear quite naturally in the model. We derive relevant Feynman rules for the type I seesaw mechanism.

Constraining noncommutative field theories with holography

An important window to quantum gravity phenomena in low energy noncommutative (NC) quantum field theories (QFTs) gets represented by a specific form of UV/IR mixing. Yet another important window to quantum gravity, a holography, manifests itself in effective QFTs as a distinct UV/IR connection. In matching these two principles, a useful relationship connecting the UV cutoff $Λ_{\rm UV}$, the IR cutoff $Λ_{\rm IR}$ and the scale of noncommutativity $Λ_{\rm NC}$, can be obtained. We show that an effective QFT endowed with both principles may not be capable to fit disparate experimental bounds simultaneously, like the muon $g-2$ and the masslessness of the photon. Also, the constraints from the muon $g-2$ preclude any possibility to observe the birefringence of the vacuum coming from objects at cosmological distances. On the other hand, in NC theories without the UV completion, where the perturbative aspect of the theory (obtained by truncating a power series in $ Λ_{\rm NC}^{-2}$) becomes important, a heuristic estimate of the region where the perturbative expansion is well-defined $E/ Λ_{\rm NC} \lesssim 1$, gets affected when holography is applied by providing the energy of the system $E$ a $Λ_{\rm NC}$-dependent lower limit. This may affect models which try to infer the scale $Λ_{\rm NC}$ by using data from low-energy experiments.

Constraining spacetime noncommutativity with primordial nucleosynthesis

We discuss a constraint on the scale $Λ_{\rm NC}$ of noncommutative (NC) gauge field theory arising from consideration of the big bang nucleosynthesis (BBN) of light elements. The propagation of neutrinos in the NC background described by an antisymmetric tensor $θ^{μν}$ does result in a tree-level vector-like coupling to photons in a generation-independent manner, raising thus a possibility to have an appreciable contribution of three light right-handed (RH) fields to the energy density of the universe at nucleosynthesis time. Considering elastic scattering processes of the RH neutrinos off charged plasma constituents at a given cosmological epoch, we obtain for a conservative limit on an effective number of additional doublet neutrinos, $ΔN_ν=1$, a bound $Λ_{\rm NC} \stackrel{>}{\sim}$ 3 TeV. With a more stringent requirement, $ΔN_ν\lesssim 0.2$, the bound is considerably improved, $Λ_{\rm NC} \stackrel{>}{\sim} 10^3$ TeV. For our bounds the $θ$-expansion of the NC action stays always meaningful, since the decoupling temperature of the RH species is perseveringly much less than the inferred bound for the scale of noncommutativity.

Dark consequences from light neutrino condensations

In this paper we discuss light neutrino dipole moments, computed in the neutrino-mass extended standard model (SM), as a possible source for neutrino condensates which may cause cosmological constant observed today.

On Cosmological Implications of Gravitational Trace Anomaly

We study the infrared effective theory of gravity that stems from the quantum trace anomaly. Quantum fluctuations of the metric induce running of the cosmological constant and the Newton constant at cosmological scales. By imposing the generalized Bianchi identity we obtain a prediction for the scale dependence of the dark matter and dark energy densities in terms of the parameters of the underlying conformal theory. For certain values of the model parameters the dark energy equation of state and the observed spectral index of the primordial density fluctuations can be simultaneously reproduced.

Constraining interacting dark energy models with flux destabilization

A destabilization in the transfer energy flux from the vacuum to radiation, for two vacuum decay laws relevant to the dark energy problem, is analyzed using the Landau-Lifshitz fluctuation hydrodynamic theory. Assuming thermal (or near thermal) equilibrium between the vacuum and radiation, at the earliest epoch of the Universe expansion, we show that the law due to renormalization-group running of the cosmological constant term, with parameters chosen not to spoil the primordial nucleosynthesis scenario, does soon drive the flux to fluctuate beyond its statistical average value thereby distorting the cosmic background radiation spectrum beyond observational limits. While the law coming from the saturated holographic dark energy does not lead the flux to wildly fluctuate, a more realistic non--saturated form shows again such anomalous behavior.
