On the correspondence between Subshifts of Finite Type and Statistical Mechanics Models

R. Burton and J. Steif developed a strategy to construct examples of strongly irreducible subshifts of finite type admitting several measures of maximal entropy. This strategy exploits a correspondence between equilibrium statistical mechanics and symbolic dynamics, correspondence which was later formalized by O. Häggström. In this paper, we revisit and discuss this correspondence with the aim of presenting a simplified version of it, and to expose some applications of rigorous results concerning the Potts model and the six-vertex model to symbolic dynamics, illustrating in this way of the possibilities of this correspondence.

Estimating entropy rate from censored symbolic time series: a test for time-irreversibility

In this work we introduce a method for estimating entropy rate and entropy production rate from finite symbolic time series. From the point of view of statistics, estimating entropy from a finite series can be interpreted as a problem of estimating parameters of a distribution with a censored or truncated sample. We use this point of view to give estimations of entropy rate and entropy production rate assuming that they are parameters of a (limit) distribution. The last statement is actually a consequence of the fact that the distribution of estimations obtained from recurrence-time statistics satisfy the central limit theorem. We test our method using time series coming from Markov chain models, discrete-time chaotic maps and real a DNA sequence from human genome.

Unbiased diffusion of Brownian particles on disordered correlated potentials

In this work we study the diffusion of non-interacting overdamped particles, moving on unbiased disordered correlated potentials, subjected to Gaussian white noise. We obtain an exact expression for the diffusion coefficient which allows us to prove that the unbiased diffusion of overdamped particles on a random polymer does not depend on the correlations of the disordered potentials. This universal behavior of the unbiased diffusivity is a direct consequence of the validity of the Einstein relation and the decay of correlations of the random polymer. We test the independence on correlations of the diffusion coefficient for correlated polymers produced by two different stochastic processes, a one-step Markov chain and the expansion-modification system. Within the accuracy of our simulations, we found that the numerically obtained diffusion coefficient for these systems agree with the analytically calculated ones, confirming our predictions.

Effective diffusion coefficient in tilted disordered potentials: Optimal relative diffusivity at a finite temperature

In this work we study the transport properties of non-interacting overdamped particles, moving on tilted disordered potentials, subjected to Gaussian white noise. We give exact formulas for the drift and diffusion coefficients for the case of random potentials resulting from the interaction of a particle with a "random polymer". In our model the "random polymer" is made up, by means of some stochastic process, of monomers that can be taken from a finite or countable infinite set of possible monomer types. For the case of uncorrelated random polymers we found that the diffusion coefficient exhibits a non-monotonous behavior as a function of the noise intensity. Particularly interesting is the fact that the relative diffusivity becomes optimal at a finite temperature, a behavior which is reminiscent to that of stochastic resonance. We explain this effect as an interplay between the deterministic and noisy dynamics of the system. We also show that this behavior of the diffusion coefficient at a finite temperature is more pronounced for the case of weakly disordered potentials. We test our findings by means of numerical simulations of the corresponding Langevin dynamics of an ensemble of noninteracting overdamped particles diffusing on uncorrelated random potentials.

Markov Approximations of Gibbs measures for long-range potentials on 1D lattices

We study one-dimensional lattice systems with pair-wise interactions of infinite range. We show projective convergence of Markov measures to the unique equilibrium state. For this purpose we impose a slightly stronger condition than summability of variations on the regularity of the interaction. With our condition we are able to explicitly obtain stretched exponential bounds for the rate of mixing of the equilibrium state. Finally we show convergence for the entropy of the Markov measures to that of the equilibrium state via the convergence of their topological pressure.
