Electronic states in superconducting type-II Dirac semimetal: 1T-PdSeTe

We have investigated the surface and bulk electronic structures of the superconducting type-II Dirac semimetal 1T-PdSeTe. The superconducting transition temperature $T_C = 3.2$ K was almost twice as high as $T_C = 1.6$ K in 1T-PdTe$_2$. Scanning transmission electron microscopy measurements showed homogeneously mixed Se and Te atoms in the chalcogen layers, consistent with the CdI$_2$-type crystal structure. Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements and density functional theory calculations indicated the existence of the topological surface states, and the overall band structures were similar to those of 1T-PdTe$_2$. These results suggest that CdI$_2$-type lattice symmetry dictates the band dispersion, regardless of atomic disorder in the chalcogen layers. As the electronic band dispersion and the local structures were persistent upon substitution, the enhancement of $T_C$ is likely associated with the chemical pressure. Our results provide insight into the effects of the solid solution on the surface and bulk electronic states as well as the superconducting transition temperature.

Atomic-scale mapping of superconductivity in the incoherent CDW mosaic phase of a transition metal dichalcogenide

The emergence of superconductivity in the octahedrally coordinated (1T) phase of TaS2 is preceded by the intriguing loss of long-range order in the charge density wave (CDW). Such decoherence, attainable by different methods, results in the formation of nm-sized coherent CDW domains bound by a two-dimensional network of domain walls (DW) - mosaic phase -, which has been proposed as the spatial origin of the superconductivity. Here, we report the atomic-scale characterization of the superconducting state of 1T-TaSSe, a model 1T compound exhibiting the CDW mosaic phase. We use high-resolution scanning tunneling spectroscopy and Andreev spectroscopy to probe the microscopic nature of the superconducting state in unambiguous connection with the electronic structure of the mosaic phase. Spatially resolved conductance maps at the Fermi level at the onset of superconductivity reveal that the density of states is mostly localized on the CDW domains compared to the domain walls, which suggests their dominant role in the formation of superconductivity. This scenario is confirmed within the superconducting dome at 340 mK, where superconductivity is fully developed, and the subtle spatial inhomogeneity of the superconducting gap remains unlinked to the domain wall network. Our results provide key new insights into the fundamental interplay between superconductivity and CDW in these relevant strongly correlated systems.

Manifestation of incoherent-coherent crossover and non-Stoner magnetism in the electronic structure of Fe$_3$GeTe$_2$

Two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals ferromagnets have potential applications as next-generation spintronic devices and provide a platform to explore the fundamental physics behind 2D magnetism. The dual nature (localized and itinerant) of electrons adds further complexity to the understanding of correlated magnetic materials. Here, we present the temperature evolution of electronic structure in 2D van der Waals ferromagnet, Fe$_{3}$GeTe$_{2}$, using photoemission spectroscopy in conjunction with density functional theory (DFT) plus dynamical mean field theory (DMFT). With the appearance of quasiparticle peak and its evolution in the vicinity of Fermi energy, we unveil empirical evidences of incoherent-coherent crossover at around 125 K. DFT+DMFT results show that the quasiparticle lifetime surpasses thermal energy for temperature below 150 K, confirming incoherent-coherent crossover in the system. No appreciable change in the Fe 2$p$ core level, overall valence band spectra across the magnetic transition, and temperature dependent ferromagnetic DFT+DMFT results, provide substantial evidence for non-stoner magnetism in Fe$_{3}$GeTe$_{2}$. We elucidate the temperature dependent intimate relation between magnetism and electronic structure in Fe$_{3}$GeTe$_{2}$. Sommerfeld coefficient of $\sim$ 104 mJ mol$^{-1}$ K$^{-2}$ obtained in the low temperature limit from DFT+DMFT calculations resolve the long standing issue of large Sommerfeld coefficient ($\sim$ 110 mJ mol$^{-1}$ K$^{-2}$) obtained from specific heat measurements.

Topological surface states host superconductivity induced by the bulk condensate in YRuB$_2$

While the possibility of topological superconductivity (TSC) in hybrid heterostructures involving topologically nontrivial band structure and superconductors has been proposed, the realization of TSC in a single stoichiometric material is most desired for fundamental experimental investigation of TSC and its device applications. Bulk measurements on YRuB$_2$ detect a single superconducting gap of $\sim$ 1 meV. This is supported by our electronic structure calculations which also reveal the existence of topological surface states in the system. We performed surface-sensitive Andreev reflection spectroscopy on YRuB$_2$ and detected the bulk superconducting gap as well as another superconducting gap of $\sim$ 0.5 meV. From our analysis of electronic structure, we show that the smaller gap is formed in the topological surface states in YRuB$_2$ due to the proximity of the bulk superconducting condensate. Thus, in agreement with the past theoretical predictions, we present YRuB$_2$ as a unique system that hosts superconducting topological surface states.

Skyrmions and magnetic bubbles in spin-orbit coupled metallic magnets

Motivated by the observation of Skyrmion-like magnetic textures in 2D itinerant ferromagnets Fe$_n$GeTe$_2$ ($n \geq3$), we develop a microscopic model combining itinerant magnetism and spin-orbit coupling on a triangular lattice. The ground state of the model in the absence of magnetic field consists of filamentary magnetic domain walls revealing a striking similarity with our magnetic force microscopy experiments on Fe$_3$GeTe$_2$. In the presence of magnetic field, these filaments were found to break into large size magnetic bubbles in our experiments. We identify uniaxial magnetic anisotropy as an important parameter in the model that interpolates between magnetic Skyrmions and ferromagnetic bubbles. Consequently, our work uncovers new topological magnetic textures that merge properties of Skyrmions and ferromagnetic bubbles.

Anisotropic magnetotransport in the layered antiferromagnet TaFe$_{1.25}$Te$_3$

The discovery of fascinating ways to control and manipulate antiferromagnetic materials have garnered considerable attention as an attractive platform to explore novel spintronic phenomena and functionalities. Layered antiferromagnets (AFMs) exhibiting interesting magnetic structures, can serve as an attractive starting point to establish novel functionalities down to the two-dimensional limit. In this work, we explore the magnetoresistive properties of the spin-ladder AFM TaFe$_{1.25}$Te$_3$. Magnetization studies reveal an anisotropic magnetic behavior resulting in the stabilization of a spin-flop configuration for H $\perp$ (10-1) plane (i.e., out-of-plane direction). Angle-dependent longitudinal and transverse magnetoresistances show an unusual anharmonic behavior. A significant anisotropic enhancement of magnetoresistance when H $\perp$ (10-1) plane compared to H $\parallel$ (10-1) directions has been observed. The present results deepen our understanding of the magnetoresistive properties of low-dimensional layered AFMs, and point towards the possibility of utilizing these novel material systems for antiferromagnetic spintronics.

Spectroscopic evidence of multi-gap superconductivity in non-centrosymmetric AuBe

AuBe is a chiral, non-centrosymmetric superconductor with transition temperature $T_C$ $\simeq$ 3.25 K. The broken inversion symmetry in its crystal structure makes AuBe a possible candidate to host a mixed singlet-triplet pairing symmetry in its superconducting order parameter ($Δ$). This possibility was investigated by transport, thermodynamic, and muon-spin rotation/relaxation experiments in AuBe. However, this issue was not addressed using direct spectroscopic probes so far. In addition, certain ambiguities exist in the description of superconductivity in AuBe based on $μ$SR experiments reported earlier. Here we report scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS) on AuBe down to 300 mK. We found a signature of two superconducting gaps (with 2$Δ_1/k_{B}T_{C}$ = 4.37 and 2$Δ_2/k_{B}T_{C}$ = 2.46 respectively) and a clean BCS-like temperature dependence of both the gaps. We have also performed band structure calculations to identify the different bands that might give rise to the observed two-gap superconductivity in AuBe.

Anisotropic superconductivity in ZrB$_{12}$ near critical Bogomolnyi point

The superconductors with the Ginzburg-Landau (G-L) parameter ($κ$) $\sim1/\sqrt{2}$ exist near a critical Bogolomonyi (B) point where they show inter-type domains between type-I and type-II superconductivity. While such physics is well understood for isotropic superconductors, the experimental investigation of the physics of anisotropic superconductors near a critical B-point remains an unattained goal mainly due to the unavailability of model material systems. Theoretically, such superconductors are expected to show type-I or type-II behaviour for definite directions of an applied magnetic field. Here, from directional point-contact Andreev reflection spectroscopy and field-angle dependent ac magnetic susceptibility measurements, we show that ZrB$_{12}$ is an anisotropic superconductor, and it exhibits field-direction dependent type-I and type-II behaviour. These observations match remarkably well with the theoretical expectations for an anisotropic superconductor near a critical B-point. Therefore, our results project ZrB$_{12}$ as a model material system where the physics of inter-type anisotropic superconductivity can be explored experimentally.

Modification of unconventional Hall effect with doping at the non-magnetic site in a 2D van der Waals ferromagnet

Two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals (vdW) magnetic materials have garnered considerable attention owing to the existence of magnetic order down to atomic dimensions and flexibility towards interface engineering, offering an attractive platform to explore novel spintronic phenomena and functionalities. Understanding of the magnetoresistive properties and their correlation to the underlying magnetic configurations is essential for 2D vdW-based spintronic or quantum information devices. Among the promising candidates, vdW ferromagnet (FM) Fe3GeTe2 shows an unusual magnetotransport behavior, tunable by doping at the magnetic (Fe) site, and tentatively arising from complicated underlying spin texture configurations. Here, we explore an alternative route towards manipulation of magnetotransport properties of a vdW FM without directly affecting the magnetic site i.e., by doping at the non-magnetic (Ge) site of Fe3(Ge,As)Te2. Interestingly, doping at the non-magnetic (Ge) site results in an unconventional Hall effect whose strength was considerably modified by increasing As concentration, possibly arising from emergent electromagnetic behavior from underlying complicated spin configurations. The present results provide a possible route to understand the intricate role played by the non-magnetic (Ge) atom towards magnetic properties of vdW FMs, and shows a novel direction towards tailoring of underlying interactions responsible for the stabilization of non trivial spin textures in 2D magnetic vdW materials.

Field induced hysteretic structural phase switching and possible CDW in Re-doped MoTe$_2$

Novel electronic systems displaying exotic physical properties can be derived from complex topological materials through chemical doping. MoTe$_2$, the candidate type-II Weyl semimetal shows dramatically enhanced superconductivity up to 4.1 K upon Re doping in Mo sites. Based on bulk transport and local scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) here we show that Re doping also leads to the emergence of a possible charge density wave (CDW) phase in Re$_{0.2}$Mo$_{0.8}$Te$_2$. In addition, the tunneling $I-V$ characteristics display non-linearity and hysteresis which is commensurate with a hysteresis observed in the change in tip-height ($z$) as a function of applied voltage $V$. The observations indicate an electric field induced hysteretic switching consistent with piezoelectricity and possible ferroelectricity.

Unconventional Hall effect and its variation with Co-doping in van der Waals Fe3GeTe2

Two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals (vdW) magnetic materials have attracted a lot of attention owing to the stabilization of long-range magnetic order down to atomic dimensions, and the prospect of novel spintronic devices with unique functionalities. The clarification of the magnetoresistive properties and its correlation to the underlying magnetic configurations is essential for 2D vdW-based spintronic devices. Here, the effect of Co-doping on the magnetic and magnetotransport properties of Fe3GeTe2 have been investigated. Magnetotransport measurements reveal an unusual Hall effect behavior whose strength was considerably modified by Co-doping and attributed to arise from the underlying complicated spin textures. The present results provide a clue to tailoring of the underlying interactions necessary for the realization of a variety of unconventional spin textures for 2D vdW FM-based spintronics.

Spectroscopic evidence of mixed angular momentum symmetry in non-centrosymmetric Ru$_7$B$_3$

Superconducting crystals with lack of inversion symmetry can potentially host unconventional pairing. However, till date, no direct conclusive experimental evidence of such unconventional order parameters in non-centrosymmetric superconductors has been reported. In this paper, through direct measurement of the superconducting energy gap by scanning tunnelling spectroscopy, we report the existence of both $s$-wave (singlet) and $p$-wave (triplet) pairing symmetries in non-centrosymmetric Ru$_7$B$_3$. Our temperature and magnetic field dependent studies also indicate that the relative amplitudes of the singlet and triplet components of the order parameter change differently with temperature.

Generation of strain-induced pseudo-magnetic field in a doped type-II Weyl semimetal

In Weyl semimetals, there is an intriguing possibility of realizing a pseudo-magnetic field in presence of small strain due to certain special cases of static deformations. This pseudo-magnetic field can be large enough to form quantized Landau levels and thus become observable in Weyl semimetals. In this paper, we experimentally show the emergence of a pseudo-magnetic field (~ 3 Tesla) by Scanning Tunneling Spectroscopy (STS) on the doped Weyl semimetal Re-MoTe2, where distinct Landau level oscillations in the tunneling conductance are clearly resolved. The crystal lattice is intrinsically strained where large area STM imaging of the surface reveals differently strained domains where atomic scale deformations exist forming topographic ripples with varying periodicity in the real space. The effect of pseudo-magnetic field is clearly resolved in areas under maximum strain.
