A Task-Agnostic Control Strategy for Dynamic Assistance with Pneumatically Actuated Soft Exosuits

Pneumatic artificial muscles have provided new opportunities to develop upper-extremity soft exosuits for reha- bilitation, augmentation, and assisted daily living. However, the complex dynamics and limited bandwidth of these actuators has made providing responsive assistance based on user intention a longstanding challenge. In this work, we present an inverse-plant control strategy for pneumatically actuated soft exosuits that only relies on kinematic sensing for task-agnostic and dynamic assistance during daily living. We model the human-robot system using a Hammerstein dynamic model, consisting of a Preisach hysteresis model and a linear time-invariant filter, to capture the static and dynamic behavior of the system. We personalize our model to each user using 140 s of data and approximate an inverse to integrate into our control loop. When evaluated on a test rig that emulated a soft assistive exosuit for the wrist, our controller reduced the interaction torque by up to 73% and the activation of key flexor and extensor muscles by up to 47% relative to the condition with no assistance for speeds ranging from 8{\deg}/s to 120{\deg}/s. Overall, this work presents a control strategy that can provide task-agnostic, dynamic assistance with pneumatically actuated soft exosuits without the need for physiological or force sensors to interpret user intention.

Microgrid Control Using Remote Controller Hardware-in-the-Loop Over the Internet

A centralized microgrid power management and control system is developed and tested with a Hardware-In-the-Loop (HIL) Real-Time Digital Simulator (RTDS) model of an existing microgrid that communicates in real-time with the controller over the Internet. The controller leverages Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs) for measuring power flow and adjusting inverter power references in real-time. The control objectives are power and State-of-Charge (SoC) control, subject to inverter power amplitude and rate limits and communication constraints. The controller incorporates units of power control, SoC control, and adaptive reference scheduling to achieve seamless microgrid operation. Real-time, over the internet, hardware-in-the-loop tests between the controller and the simulator are realized and indicate stability and performance of the microgrid control system.

Market-Driven Energy Storage Planning for Microgrids with Renewable Energy Systems Using Stochastic Programming

Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) can mitigate effects of intermittent energy production from renewable energy sources and play a critical role in peak shaving and demand charge management. To optimally size the BESS from an economic perspective, the trade-off between BESS investment costs, lifetime, and revenue from utility bill savings along with microgrid ancillary services must be taken into account. The optimal size of a BESS is solved via a stochastic optimization problem considering wholesale market pricing. A stochastic model is used to schedule arbitrage services for energy storage based on the forecasted energy market pricing while accounting for BESS cost trends, the variability of renewable energy resources, and demand prediction. The uniqueness of the approach proposed in this paper lies in the convex optimization programming framework that computes a globally optimal solution to the financial trade-off solution. The approach is illustrated by application to various realistic case studies based on pricing and demand data from the California Independent System Operator (CAISO). The case study results give insight in optimal BESS sizing from a cost perspective, based on both yearly scheduling and daily BESS operation.
