Creation and detection of photonic molecules in Rydberg gases

We consider the propagation of photons in a gas of Rydberg atoms under conditions of electromagnetically induced transparency, where they form strongly interacting massive particles, termed Rydberg polaritons. Depending on the strength of the van der Waals-type interactions of the atoms either bunching or anti-bunching of photons can be observed when driving the atoms off-resonantly. The bunching is associated with the formation of bound states. We employ a Green's function approach and numerical wave-function simulations to analyze the conditions for the creation and the dynamics of these photonic molecules and their interplay with the scattering continuum which can also show photon bunching. Analytic solutions of the pair-propagation problem obtained from a pseudopotential approximation and verified numerically provide a detailed understanding of bound and scattering states. We find that the scattering contributions acquire asymptotically a robust relative phase which can be employed to separate bound-state and scattering contributions by a homodyne detection scheme.

Dynamical simulation of integrable and non-integrable models in the Heisenberg picture

The numerical simulation of quantum many-body dynamics is typically limited by the linear growth of entanglement with time. Recently numerical studies have shown, however, that for 1D Bethe-integrable models the simulation of local operators in the Heisenberg picture can be efficient as the corresponding operator-space entanglement grows only logarithmically. Using the spin-1/2 XX chain as generic example of an integrabel model that can be mapped to free particles, we here provide a simple explanation for this. We show furthermore that the same reduction of complexity applies to operators that have a high-temperature auto correlation function which decays slower than exponential, i.e., with a power law. This is amongst others the case for models where the Blombergen-De Gennes conjecture of high-temperature diffusive dynamics holds. Thus efficient simulability may already be implied by a single conservation law (like that of total magnetization), as we will illustrate numerically for the spin-1 XXZ model.

Bose-Einstein condensation of stationary-light polaritons

We propose and analyze a mechanism for Bose-Einstein condensation of stationary dark-state polaritons. Dark-state polaritons (DSPs) are formed in the interaction of light with laser-driven 3-level Lambda-type atoms and are the basis of phenomena such as electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT), ultra-slow and stored light. They have long intrinsic lifetimes and in a stationary set-up with two counterpropagating control fields of equal intensity have a 3D quadratic dispersion profile with variable effective mass. Since DSPs are bosons they can undergo a Bose-Einstein condensation at a critical temperature which can be many orders of magnitude larger than that of atoms. We show that thermalization of polaritons can occur via elastic collisions mediated by a resonantly enhanced optical Kerr nonlinearity on a time scale short compared to the decay time. Finally condensation can be observed by turning stationary into propagating polaritons and monitoring the emitted light.

Entanglement generation by adiabatic navigation in the space of symmetric multi-particle states

We propose a technique for robust and efficient navigation in the Hilbert space of entangled symmetric states of a multiparticle system with externally controllable linear and nonlinear collective interactions. A linearly changing external field applied along the quantization axis creates a network of well separated level crossings in the energy diagram of the collective states. One or more transverse pulsed fields applied at the times of specific level crossings induce adiabatic passage between these states. By choosing the timing of the pulsed field appropriately, one can transfer an initial product state of all N spins into (i) any symmetric state with n spin excitations and (ii) the N-particle analog of the Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger state. This technique, unlike techniques using pulses of specific area, does not require precise knowledge of the number of particles and is robust against variations in the interaction parameters. We discuss potential applications in two-component Bose condensates and ion-trap systems.
