The tri-fundamental quartic model

We consider a multi-scalar field theory with either short-range or long-range free action and with quartic interactions that are invariant under $O(N_1)\times O(N_2) \times O(N_3)$ transformations, of which the scalar fields form a tri-fundamental representation. We study the renormalization group fixed points at two loops at finite $N$ and in various large-$N$ scaling limits for small $ε$, the latter being either the deviation from the critical dimension or from the critical scaling of the free propagator. In particular, for the homogeneous case $N_i = N$ for $i=1,2,3$, we study the subleading corrections to previously known fixed points. In the short-range model, for $εN^2\gg 1$, we find complex fixed points with non-zero tetrahedral coupling, that at leading order reproduce the results of arXiv:1707.03866 ; the main novelty at next-to-leading order is that the critical exponents acquire a real part, thus allowing a correct identification of some fixed points as IR stable. In the long-range model, for $εN \ll 1 $, we find again complex fixed points with non-zero tetrahedral coupling, that at leading order reproduce the line of stable fixed points of arXiv:1903.03578; at next-to-leading order, this is reduced to a discrete set of stable fixed points. One difference between the short-range and long-range cases is that, in the former the critical exponents are purely imaginary at leading-order and gain a real part at next-to-leading order, while for the latter the situation is reversed.

Hints of unitarity at large $N$ in the $O(N)^3$ tensor field theory

We compute the OPE coefficients of the bosonic tensor model of \cite{Benedetti:2019eyl} for three point functions with two fields and a bilinear with zero and non-zero spin. We find that all the OPE coefficients are real in the case of an imaginary tetrahedral coupling constant, while one of them is not real in the case of a real coupling. We also discuss the operator spectrum of the free theory based on the character decomposition of the partition function.

On the generalization of the Wigner semicircle law to real symmetric tensors

We propose a simple generalization of the matrix resolvent to a resolvent for real symmetric tensors $T\in \otimes^p \mathbb{R}^N$ of order $p\ge 3$. The tensor resolvent yields an integral representation for a class of tensor invariants and its singular locus can be understood in terms of the real eigenvalues of tensors. We then consider a random Gaussian (real symmetric) tensor. We show that in the large $N$ limit the expected resolvent has a finite cut in the complex plane and that the associated "spectral density", that is the discontinuity at the cut, obeys a universal law which generalizes the Wigner semicircle law to arbitrary order. Finally, we consider a spiked tensor for $p\ge 3$, that is the sum of a fixed tensor $b\,v^{\otimes p}$ with $v\in \mathbb{R}^N$ (the signal) and a random Gaussian tensor $T$ (the noise). We show that in the large $N$ limit the expected resolvent undergoes a sharp transition at some threshold value of the signal to noise ratio $b$ which we compute analytically.

Conformal Symmetry and Composite Operators in the $O(N)^3$ Tensor Field Theory

We continue the study of the bosonic $O(N)^3$ model with quartic interactions and long-range propagator. The symmetry group allows for three distinct invariant $ϕ^4$ composite operators, known as tetrahedron, pillow and double-trace. As shown in arXiv:1903.03578 and arXiv:1909.07767, the tetrahedron operator is exactly marginal in the large-$N$ limit and for a purely imaginary tetrahedron coupling a line of real infrared fixed points (parametrized by the absolute value of the tetrahedron coupling) is found for the other two couplings. These fixed points have real critical exponents and a real spectrum of bilinear operators, satisfying unitarity constraints. This raises the question whether at large-$N$ the model is unitary, despite the tetrahedron coupling being imaginary. In this paper, we first rederive the above results by a different regularization and renormalization scheme. We then discuss the operator mixing for composite operators and we give a perturbative proof of conformal invariance of the model at the infrared fixed points by adapting a similar proof from the long-range Ising model. At last, we identify the scaling operators at the fixed point and compute the two- and three-point functions of $ϕ^4$ and $ϕ^2$ composite operators. The correlations have the expected conformal behavior and the OPE coefficients are all real, reinforcing the claim that the large-$N$ CFT is unitary.

Notes on Tensor Models and Tensor Field Theories

Tensor models and tensor field theories admit a $1/N$ expansion and a melonic large $N$ limit which is simpler than the planar limit of random matrices and richer than the large $N$ limit of vector models. They provide examples of analytically tractable but non trivial strongly coupled quantum field theories and lead to a new class of conformal field theories. We present a compact introduction to the topic, covering both some of the classical results in the field, like the details of the $1/N$ expansion, as well as recent developments. These notes are loosely bases on four lectures given at the Journées de physique mathématique Lyon 2019: Random tensors and SYK models.

Line of fixed points in a bosonic tensor model

We consider the $O(N)^3$ tensor model of Klebanov and Tarnopolsky \cite{Klebanov:2016xxf} in $d<4$ with a free covariance modified to fit the infrared conformal scaling. We study the renormalization group flow of the model using a Wilsonian approach valid in any $d$ (notably we do not require $d=4-ε$ with small $ε$). At large $N$, the tetrahedral coupling has a finite flow, hence it becomes a free parameter. The remaining flow can be parameterized by two couplings which do not mix. We show that, at leading order in $1/N$ but non perturbatively in the couplings, the beta functions stop at quadratic order in the pillow and double-trace couplings. We find four fixed points which depend parametrically on the tetrahedral coupling. For purely imaginary values of the latter we identify a real and \emph{infrared attractive} fixed point. We remark that an imaginary tetrahedral coupling is in fact natural from the onset as the tetrahedral invariant does not have any positivity property, and moreover in the large-$N$ limit beta functions depend on the square of the tetrahedral coupling, thus they remain real, as long as the other couplings stay real.

Tensorial Gross-Neveu models

We define and study various tensorial generalizations of the Gross-Neveu model in two dimensions, that is, models with four-fermion interactions and $G^3$ symmetry, where we take either $G=U(N)$ or $G=O(N)$. Such models can also be viewed as two-dimensional generalizations of the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model, or more precisely of its tensorial counterpart introduced by Klebanov and Tarnopolsky, which is in part our motivation for studying them. Using the Schwinger-Dyson equations at large-$N$, we discuss the phenomenon of dynamical mass generation and possible combinations of couplings to avoid it. For the case $G=U(N)$, we introduce an intermediate field representation and perform a stability analysis of the vacua. It turns out that the only apparently viable combination of couplings that avoids mass generation corresponds to an unstable vacuum. The stable vacuum breaks $U(N)^3$ invariance, in contradiction with the Coleman-Mermin-Wagner theorem, but this is an artifact of the large-$N$ expansion, similar to the breaking of continuous chiral symmetry in the chiral Gross-Neveu model.

2PI effective action for the SYK model and tensor field theories

We discuss the two-particle irreducible (2PI) effective action for the SYK model and for tensor field theories. For the SYK model the 2PI effective action reproduces the bilocal reformulation of the model without using replicas. In general tensor field theories the 2PI formalism is the only way to obtain a bilocal reformulation of the theory, and as such is a precious instrument for the identification of soft modes and for possible holographic interpretations. We compute the 2PI action for several models, and push it up to fourth order in the $1/N$ expansion for the model proposed by Witten in arXiv:1610.09758, uncovering a one-loop structure in terms of an auxiliary bilocal action.

The $1/N$ expansion of the symmetric traceless and the antisymmetric tensor models in rank three

We prove rigorously that the symmetric traceless and the antisymmetric tensor models in rank three with tetrahedral interaction admit a $1/N$ expansion, and that at leading order they are dominated by melon diagrams. This proves the recent conjecture of I. Klebanov and G. Tarnopolsky in JHEP 10 (2017) 037 [arXiv:1706.00839], which they checked numerically up to 8th order in the coupling constant.

The $1/N$ expansion of tensor models with two symmetric tensors

It is well known that tensor models for a tensor with no symmetry admit a $1/N$ expansion dominated by melonic graphs. This result relies crucially on identifying \emph{jackets} which are globally defined ribbon graphs embedded in the tensor graph. In contrast, no result of this kind has so far been established for symmetric tensors because global jackets do not exist. In this paper we introduce a new approach to the $1/N$ expansion in tensor models adapted to symmetric tensors. In particular we do not use any global structure like the jackets. We prove that, for any rank $D$, a tensor model with two symmetric tensors and interactions the complete graph $K_{D+1}$ admits a $1/N$ expansion dominated by melonic graphs.

Quenched equals annealed at leading order in the colored SYK model

We consider a colored version of the SYK model, that is we distinguish the $D$ vector fermionic fields involved in the interaction by a color. We obtain the full $1/N$ series of both the quenched and annealed free energies of the model and show that at leading order the two are identical. The results can be used to study systematically the $1/N$ corrections to this leading order behavior.

The $\imath ε$ prescription in the SYK model

We introduce an $\imath ε$ prescription for the SYK model both at finite and at zero temperature. This prescription regularizes all the naive ultraviolet divergences of the model. As expected the prescription breaks the conformal invariance, but the latter is restored in the $ε\to 0$ limit. We prove rigorously that the Schwinger Dyson equation of the resummed two point function at large $N$ and low momentum is recovered in this limit. Based on this $\imath ε$ prescription we introduce an effective field theory Lagrangian for the infrared SYK model.

The complete $1/N$ expansion of a SYK--like tensor model

A SYK--like model close to the colored tensor models has recently been proposed \cite{Witten:2016iux}. Building on results obtained in tensor models \cite{GurSch}, we discuss the complete $1/N$ expansion of the model. We detail the two and four point functions at leading order. The leading order two point function is a sum over melonic graphs, and the leading order relevant four point functions are sums over dressed ladder diagrams. We then show that any order in the $1/N$ series of the two point function can be written solely in term of the leading order two and four point functions. The full $1/N$ expansion of arbitrary correlations can be obtained by similar methods.

Invitation to Random Tensors

This article is preface to the SIGMA special issue "Tensor Models, Formalism and Applications", http://www.emis.de/journals/SIGMA/Tensor_Models.html. The issue is a collection of eight excellent, up to date reviews on random tensor models. The reviews combine pedagogical introductions meant for a general audience with presentations of the most recent developments in the field. This preface aims to give a condensed panoramic overview of random tensors as the natural generalization of random matrices to higher dimensions.

The Wilson loop in the Gaussian Unitary Ensemble

Using the supersymmetric formalism we compute exactly at finite $N$ the expectation of the Wilson loop in the Gaussian Unitary Ensemble and derive an exact formula for the spectral density at finite $N$. We obtain the same result by a second method relying on enumerative combinatorics and show that it leads to a novel proof of the Harer-Zagier series formula.

Regular colored graphs of positive degree

Regular colored graphs are dual representations of pure colored D-dimensional complexes. These graphs can be classified with respect to an integer, their degree, much like maps are characterized by the genus. We analyse the structure of regular colored graphs of fixed positive degree and perform their exact and asymptotic enumeration. In particular we show that the generating function of the family of graphs of fixed degree is an algebraic series with a positive radius of convergence, independant of the degree. We describe the singular behavior of this series near its dominant singularity, and use the results to establish the double scaling limit of colored tensor models.

Symmetry breaking in tensor models

In this paper we analyze a quartic tensor model with one interaction for a tensor of arbitrary rank. This model has a critical point where a continuous limit of infinitely refined random geometries is reached. We show that the critical point corresponds to a phase transition in the tensor model associated to a breaking of the unitary symmetry. We analyze the model in the two phases and prove that, in a double scaling limit, the symmetric phase corresponds to a theory of infinitely refined random surfaces, while the broken phase corresponds to a theory of infinitely refined random nodal surfaces. At leading order in the double scaling limit planar surfaces dominate in the symmetric phase, and planar nodal surfaces dominate in the broken phase.

The double scaling limit of the multi-orientable tensor model

In this paper we study the double scaling limit of the multi-orientable tensor model. We prove that, contrary to the case of matrix models but similarly to the case of invariant tensor models, the double scaling series are convergent. We resum the double scaling series of the two point function and of the leading singular part of the four point function. We discuss the behavior of the leading singular part of arbitrary correlation functions. We show that the contribution of the four point function and of all the higher point functions are enhanced in the double scaling limit. We finally show that all the correlation functions exhibit a singularity at the same critical value of the double scaling parameter which, combined with the convergence of the double scaling series, suggest the existence of a triple scaling limit.
