Chern Dartboard Superconductors

We investigate the interplay of particle-hole symmetry and sub-Brillouin zone (sBZ) topology by coupling a so-called Chern dartboard insulator (CDI) to a superconductor (SC) via the proximity effect. We dub the hybrid system, and equivalent intrinsically superconducting phases, a \emph{Chern dartboard superconductor} (CDSC). We show that a CDSC can have nontrivial sBZ topology if it arises from a CDI that has an even number of mirror symmetries $n$. On the other hand, particle-hole symmetry constrains a CDSC that arises from an odd-$n$ CDI to have trivial sBZ topology. However, we can circumvent this constraint for $n=1$ by inducing an FFLO-type pairing or shifting the CDI in momentum space, converting the mirror symmetry to a momentum-space nonsymmorphic mirror symmetry. With a superconducting pairing that preserves the (nonsymmorphic) mirror symmetries, even-$n$ CDIs and the shifted $n=1$ CDI can realize the minimal spinless phase that has a trivial total Chern number and nontrivial reduced Chern numbers. With a pairing that breaks the mirror symmetries, the hybrid system can realize phases that have nontrivial total and reduced Chern numbers, expanding the classification of phases that have sub-Brillouin zone (sBZ) topology. We also predict that some types of $n=2$ CDSCs inherit the quantized crystalline response of the $n=2$ CDI, providing experimentalists with a well-defined way to probe the CDSC. Our work motivates further exploration of sBZ topology, bulk topology, and quantized response.

Learning Adapter Rank via Symmetry Breaking

Low-rank adaptation is effective partly because downstream updates lie in a low-dimensional subspace, but the latent rank coordinates of LoRA are not identifiable: any invertible reparameterization of the adapter factors leaves the weight update unchanged. We show that variational inference with a diagonal rank-wise posterior turns this non-identifiability into a useful inductive bias. By breaking LoRA's rotational gauge symmetry, the variational objective selects a preferred basis in rank space, enabling automatic relevance determination over rank directions. This yields Low-Rank Variational Dropout (LRVD), a Bayesian framework that performs inference directly in the low-rank adaptation space rather than the ambient weight space. As an instantiation, BayesLoRA jointly learns effective adapter rank and predictive uncertainty with only $\mathcal{O}(r)$ additional parameters. Empirically, BayesLoRA induces stable rank structure aligned with the dominant singular directions of learned updates, yields compact predictive calibration and matches or exceeds strong low-rank sparsification baselines at comparable training cost.

Discovery of a 1D edge mode in a Magnetic Topological semimetal

In rare-earth monopnictides like NdBi, the interplay between magnetism and topology results in an extremely unusual topological semimetal phase which simultaneously hosts Weyl points with Fermi arcs as well as massive and massless Dirac cones. A central question in this class of materials is whether ferromagnetic surfaces with gapped Dirac cones can also host robust well-defined chiral edge states. In this study, we use spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscopy (SP-STM) and spectroscopy to investigate the correlation between the magnetic and topological properties of NdBi. By combining SP-STM imaging with quasiparticle interference, we identify distinct signatures of both antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic surface terminations and correlate them with their respective band structures. Crucially, we demonstrate that step edges on the ferromagnetic surface which serve as magnetic domain walls host well-defined one-dimensional (1D) edge modes that vanish above the N\'eel temperature. Our findings position NdBi as a promising platform for further explorations of 1D chiral edge modes and future realizations of Majorana states in proximitized rare-earth monopnictides.
