HDRL Staff Strategy Meeting Report

HDRL held its first HDRL wide strategy meeting in January 2026, pulling in a majority of HDRL member staff and selected HDRL grantees. Just over 40 people attended with a few more online to listen to over 30 lightning talks presented by their colleagues and leaders, participate in several breakout and group discussions, and cast 324 votes on over 50 strategic topic ideas contributed by the attendees. The many ideas generated by attendees can be grouped into seven themes which describe the overall breadth of discussion at the meeting. These themes included: Metadata, Standards, and Semantics Discovery, Search, and Recommendation Modernizing HDRL User experience Modernizing HDRL Staff experience Modernized, Scalable, and Dependable Infrastructure for Compute and Storage Metrics and Impact Assessment Community Engagement and Sustainability Considering the gathered information and the interconnections between the prioritized ideas we concluded that several strategic areas for action exist. This document provides an overview of contributed materials and post meeting strategic analysis.

Kamodo: Simplifying Model Data Access and Utilization

To address the lack of user-friendly software needed to simplify the utilization of model data across Heliophysics, the Community Coordinated Modeling Center (CCMC) at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center has developed a model-agnostic method via Kamodo for users to easily access and utilize model data in their workflows. By abstracting away the broad range of file formats and the intricacies of interpolation on specialized grids, this approach significantly lowers the barrier to model data access and utilization for the community while adding exciting new capabilities to their tool boxes. This paper describes the direct interfaces to the model data, called model readers, and a basic introduction on how to use them. Additionally, we detail the planned approach for including custom interpolation codes, and include current progress on specialized visualization developments. The CCMC is maintaining Kamodo as an official NASA open-sourced software to enable and encourage community collaboration.

Gamma-rays Associated with Nearby Thunderstorms at Ground Level

The TGF and Energetic Thunderstorm Rooftop Array (TETRA) is an array of NaI scintillators located at rooftop level on the campus of Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. From July 2010 through March 2014, TETRA has detected 28 millisecond-duration bursts of gamma-rays at energies 50 keV - 2 MeV associated with nearby (< 8 km) thunderstorms. The ability to observe ground-level Terrestrial Gamma Flashes from close to the source allows a unique analysis of the storm cells producing these events. The results of the initial analysis will be presented.

TETRA Observation of Gamma Rays at Ground Level Associated with Nearby Thunderstorms

Terrestrial Gamma ray Flashes (TGFs) -- very short, intense bursts of electrons, positrons, and energetic photons originating from terrestrial thunderstorms -- have been detected with satellite instruments. TETRA, an array of NaI(Tl) scintillators at Louisiana State University, has now been used to detect similar bursts of 50 keV to over 2 MeV gamma rays at ground level. After 2.6 years of observation, twenty-four events with durations 0.02- 4.2 msec have been detected associated with nearby lightning, three of them coincident events observed by detectors separated by ~1000 m. Nine of the events occurred within 6 msec and 3 miles of negative polarity cloud-to-ground lightning strokes with measured currents in excess of 20 kA. The events reported here constitute the first catalog of TGFs observed at ground level in close proximity to the acceleration site.
