Non-perturbative Propagators, Running Coupling and Dynamical Quark Mass of Landau gauge QCD

The coupled system of renormalized Dyson-Schwinger equations for the quark, gluon and ghost propagators of Landau gauge QCD is solved within truncation schemes. These employ bare as well as non-perturbative ansaetze for the vertices such that the running coupling as well as the quark mass function are independent of the renormalization point. The one-loop anomalous dimensions of all propagators are reproduced. Dynamical chiral symmetry breaking is found, the dynamically generated quark mass agrees well with phenomenological values and corresponding results from lattice calculations. The effects of unquenching the system are small. In particular the infrared behavior of the ghost and gluon dressing functions found in previous studies is almost unchanged as long as the number of light flavors is smaller than four.

Kugo-Ojima confinement and QCD Green's functions in covariant gauges

In Landau gauge QCD the Kugo-Ojima confinement criterion and its relation to the infrared behaviour of the gluon and ghost propagators are reviewed. It is demonstrated that the realization of this confinement criterion (which is closely related to the Gribov-Zwanziger horizon condition) results from quite general properties of the ghost Dyson-Schwinger equation. The numerical solutions for the gluon and ghost propagators obtained from a truncated set of Dyson--Schwinger equations provide an explicit example for the anticipated infrared behaviour. The results are in good agreement, also quantitatively, with corresponding lattice data obtained recently. The resulting running coupling approaches a fixed point in the infrared, $α(0) = 8.915/N_c$. Solutions for the coupled system of Dyson--Schwinger equations for the quark, gluon and ghost propagators are presented. Dynamical generation of quark masses and thus spontaneous breaking of chiral symmetry takes place. In the quenched approximation the quark propagator functions agree well with those of corresponding lattice calculations. For a small number of light flavours the quark, gluon and ghost propagators deviate only slightly from the ones in quenched approximation. While the positivity violation of the gluon spectral function is manifest in the gluon propagator, there are no clear indications of analogous positivity violations for quarks so far.

Kugo-Ojima confinement criterion, Zwanziger-Gribov horizon condition, and infrared critical exponents in Landau gauge QCD

The Kugo-Ojima confinement criterion and its relation to the infrared behaviour of the gluon and ghost propagators in Landau gauge QCD are reviewed. The realization of this confinement criterion (which in Landau gauge relates to Zwanziger's horizon condition) results from quite general properties of the ghost Dyson-Schwinger equation. The numerical solutions for the gluon and ghost propagators obtained from a truncated set of Dyson-Schwinger equations provide an explicit example for the anticipated infrared behaviour. These results are in good agreement, also quantitatively, with corresponding lattice data obtained recently. The resulting running coupling approaches a fixed point in the infrared, $α(0) = 8.9/N_c$. Solutions for the coupled system of Dyson-Schwinger equations for the quark, gluon and ghost propagators are presented. Dynamical generation of quark masses and thus spontaneous breaking of chiral symmetry is found. In the quenched approximation the quark propagator functions agree well with those of corresponding lattice calculations. For a small number of light flavours the quark, gluon and ghost propagators deviate only slightly from the quenched ones. While the positivity violation of the gluon spectral function is apparent in the gluon propagator, there are no clear indications of positivity violations in the Landau gauge quark propagator.

Towards the Finite Temperature Gluon Propagator in Landau Gauge Yang-Mills Theory

Yang-Mills theories undergo a deconfining phase transition at a critical temperature. In lattice calculations the temporal Wilson loop and Z_3 order parameter show above this temperature a behavior typical of deconfinement. A quantity of interest in the study of this transition is the gluon propagator and its evolution with temperature. This contribution describes the current status of an investigation of the finite temperature gluon propagator in Landau gauge. It analyzes the high temperature case. The resulting equations are compared to the corresponding ones of three-dimensional Yang-Mills theory. Under certain assumptions it is found that a kind of spatial "confinement" is still present, even at very high temperatures.

Infrared Exponents and the Running Coupling of Landau gauge QCD and their Relation to Confinement

The infrared behaviour of the gluon and ghost propagators in Landau gauge QCD is reviewed. The Kugo-Ojima confinement criterion and the Gribov-Zwanziger horizon condition result from quite general properties of the ghost Dyson-Schwinger equation. The numerical solutions for the gluon and ghost propagators obtained from a truncated set of Dyson-Schwinger equations provide an explicit example for the anticipated infrared behaviour. The results are in good agreement with corresponding lattice data obtained recently. The resulting running coupling approaches a fix point in the infrared, $α(0) = 8.92/N_c$. Two different fits for the scale dependence of the running coupling are given and discussed.

The Kugo-Ojima Confinement Criterion from Dyson-Schwinger Equations

Prerequisites of confinement in the covariant and local description of QCD are reviewed. In particular, the Kugo-Ojima confinement criterion, the positivity violations of transverse gluon and quark states, and the conditions necessary to avoid the decomposition property for colored clusters are discussed. In Landau gauge QCD, the Kugo-Ojima confinement criterion follows from the ghost Dyson-Schwinger equation if the corresponding Green's functions can be expanded in an asymptotic series. Furthermore, the infrared behaviour of the propagators in Landau gauge QCD as extracted from solutions to truncated Dyson-Schwinger equations and lattice simulations is discussed in the light of these issues.

Verifying the Kugo-Ojima Confinement Criterion in Landau Gauge Yang-Mills Theory

Expanding the Landau gauge gluon and ghost two-point functions in a power series we investigate their infrared behavior. The corresponding powers are constrained through the ghost Dyson-Schwinger equation by exploiting multiplicative renormalizability. Without recourse to any specific truncation we demonstrate that the infrared powers of the gluon and ghost propagators are uniquely related to each other. Constraints for these powers are derived, and the resulting infrared enhancement of the ghost propagator signals that the Kugo-Ojima confinement criterion is fulfilled in Landau gauge Yang-Mills theory.

The Infrared Behavior of QCD Green's Functions - Confinement, Dynamical Symmetry Breaking, and Hadrons as Relativistic Bound States

Recent studies of QCD Green's functions and their applications in hadronic physics are reviewed. We briefly discuss the issues of gauge fixing, BRS invariance and positivity. Evidence for the violation of positivity by quarks and transverse gluons in the covariant gauge is collected, and it is argued that this is one manifestation of confinement. We summarise the derivation of the Dyson-Schwinger equations (DSEs) of QED and QCD. The influence of instantons on DSEs in a 2-dimensional model is mentioned. Solutions for the Green's functions in QED in 2+1 and 3+1 dimensions provide tests of various schemes to truncate DSEs. We discuss possible extensions to QCD and their limitations. Truncation schemes for DSEs of QCD are discussed in the axial gauge and in the Landau gauge. We review the available results from a systematic non-perturbative expansion scheme established for Landau gauge QCD. Comparisons to related lattice results, where available, are presented. The applications of QCD Green's functions to hadron physics are summarized. Properties of ground state mesons are discussed on the basis of the Bethe-Salpeter equation for quarks and antiquarks. The Goldstone nature of pseudoscalar mesons and mechanisms of diquark confinement are reviewed. We discuss some properties of ground state baryons based on their description as Bethe-Salpeter/Faddeev bound states of quark-diquark correlations in the quantum field theory of confined quarks and gluons.

What the Infrared Behavior of QCD Green Functions can tell us about Confinement in the Covariant Gauge

We review aspects of confinement in the covariant and local description of QCD and discuss to what extend our present knowledge of the infrared behavior of QCD Green functions can support this description. In particular, we emphasize: the positivity violations of transverse gluon and quark states, the Kugo-Ojima confinement criterion, and the conditions necessary to avoid the decomposition property for colored clusters. We summarize how these issues relate to the infrared behavior of the propagators in Landau gauge QCD as extracted from solutions to truncated Dyson-Schwinger equations and lattice simulations.

The Infrared Behavior of QCD Propagators in Landau Gauge

Some features of the solutions to the truncated Dyson-Schwinger equations(DSEs) for the propagators of QCD in Landau gauge are summarized. In particular, the Kugo-Ojima confinement criterion is realized, and positivity of transverse gluons is manifestly violated in these solutions. In Landau gauge, the gluon-ghost vertex function offers a convenient possibility to define a nonperturbative running coupling. The infrared fixed point obtained from this coupling which determines the 2-point interactions of color-octet quark currents implies the existence of unphysical massless states which are necessary to escape the cluster decomposition of colored clusters. The gluon and ghost propagators, and the nonperturbative running coupling, are compared to recent lattice simulations. A significant deviation of the running coupling from the infrared behavior extracted in simulations of 3-point functions is attributed to an inconsistency of asymmetric subtraction schemes due to a consequence of the Kugo-Ojima criterion: infrared enhanced ghosts.

The Infrared Behavior of Propagators in Landau Gauge QCD

A closed system of equations for the propagators of Landau gauge QCD is obtained in a truncation scheme for their Dyson-Schwinger equations which implements the Slavnov-Taylor identities for the 3-point vertex functions while neglecting contributions from irreducible 4-point correlations. In the pure gauge theory without quarks, non-perturbative solutions for the gluon and ghost propagators are available in an approximation which allows for an analytic discussion of their behavior in the infrared: The gluon propagator vanishes for small spacelike momenta, whereas the ghost propagator is found to be infrared enhanced. The running coupling of the non-perturbative subtraction scheme approaches the finite value $α_c \simeq 9.5$ at an infrared fixed point. The gluon propagator entails a violation of positivity for transverse gluon states implying their absence from a positive subspace expected for asymptotic hadronic states and thus confinement. Both propagators, obtained for gluons and ghosts in the present scheme, compare well with recent lattice calculations. In the quenched approximation, the quark propagator describes dynamical chiral symmetry breaking well, although the corresponding interaction in the gap equation for the quark self-energy is infrared suppressed. First results of a simultaneous solution to the coupled system of gluons, ghosts {\sl and} quarks indicate towards weak, and possibly negligible, vacuum polarisation effects of dynamical quarks on the gluon and ghost correlations in the infrared.

The Infrared Behavior of Gluon, Ghost, and Quark Propagators in Landau Gauge QCD

A truncation scheme for the Dyson-Schwinger equations of QCD in Landau gauge is presented which implements the Slavnov-Taylor identities for the 3-point vertex functions. Neglecting contributions from 4-point correlations such as the 4-gluon vertex function and irreducible scattering kernels, a closed system of equations for the propagators is obtained. For the pure gauge theory without quarks this system of equations for the propagators of gluons and ghosts is solved in an approximation which allows for an analytic discussion of its solutions in the infrared: The gluon propagator is shown to vanish for small spacelike momenta whereas the ghost propagator is found to be infrared enhanced. The running coupling of the non-perturbative subtraction scheme approaches an infrared stable fixed point at a critical value of the coupling, $α_c \simeq 9.5$. The gluon propagator is shown to have no Lehmann representation. The gluon and ghost propagators obtained here compare favorably with recent lattice calculations. Results for the quark propagator in the quenched approximation are presented.

Solving the Gluon Dyson-Schwinger Equation in the Mandelstam Approximation

Truncated Dyson-Schwinger equations represent finite subsets of the equations of motion for Green's functions. Solutions to these non-linear integral equations can account for non-perturbative correlations. We describe the solution to the Dyson-Schwinger equation for the gluon propagator of Landau gauge QCD in the Mandelstam approximation. This involves a combination of numerical and analytic methods: An asymptotic infrared expansion of the solution is calculated recursively. In the ultraviolet, the problem reduces to an analytically solvable differential equation. The iterative solution is then obtained numerically by matching it to the analytic results at appropriate points. Matching point independence is obtained for sufficiently wide ranges. The solution is used to extract a non-perturbative beta-function. The scaling behavior is in good agreement with perturbative QCD. No further fixed point for positive values of the coupling is found which thus increases without bound in the infrared. The non-perurbative result implies an infrared singular quark interaction relating the scale Lambda of the subtraction scheme to the string tension sigma.

Solving a Coupled Set of Truncated QCD Dyson-Schwinger Equations

Truncated Dyson-Schwinger equations represent finite subsets of the equations of motion for Green's functions. Solutions to these non-linear integral equations can account for non-perturbative correlations. A closed set of coupled Dyson-Schwinger equations for the propagators of gluons and ghosts in Landau gauge QCD is obtained by neglecting all contributions from irreducible 4-point correlations and by implementing the Slavnov-Taylor identities for the 3-point vertex functions. We solve this coupled set in an one-dimensional approximation which allows for an analytic infrared expansion necessary to obtain numerically stable results. This technique, which was also used in our previous solution of the gluon Dyson-Schwinger equation in the Mandelstam approximation, is here extended to solve the coupled set of integral equations for the propagators of gluons and ghosts simultaneously. In particular, the gluon propagator is shown to vanish for small spacelike momenta whereas the previoulsy neglected ghost propagator is found to be enhanced in the infrared. The running coupling of the non-perturbative subtraction scheme approaches an infrared stable fixed point at a critical value of the coupling, alpha_c approximately 9.5.

The Infrared Behavior of Gluon and Ghost Propagators in Landau Gauge QCD

A solvable systematic truncation scheme for the Dyson-Schwinger equations of Euclidean QCD in Landau gauge is presented. It implements the Slavnov-Taylor identities for the three-gluon and ghost-gluon vertices, whereas irreducible four-gluon couplings as well as the gluon-ghost and ghost-ghost scattering kernels are neglected. The infrared behavior of gluon and ghost propagators is obtained analytically: The gluon propagator vanishes for small spacelike momenta whereas the ghost propagator diverges stronger than a massless particle pole. The numerical solutions are compared with recent lattice data for these propagators. The running coupling of the renormalization scheme approaches a fixed point, $α_c \simeq 9.5$, in the infrared.

A Dynamical Eta'-Mass from an Infrared Enhanced Gluon Exchange

The pseudo-scalar flavor-singlet meson mixes with two gluons. A dimensional argument by Kogut and Susskind shows that this can screen the Goldstone pole of the chiral limit in this channel, if the gluon correlations are infrared enhanced. Using a gluon propagator as singular as sigma/k^4 for k^2 -> 0 we relate the screening mass to the string tension sigma. In the Witten-Veneziano action to describe the eta-eta' mixing this relation yields masses of about 810MeV for the eta', 430MeV for the eta and a mixing angle of about -30deg from the phenomenological value for sigma of approx. 0.18GeV^2. The very weak temperature dependence of the string tension should make this mechanism experimentally distinguishable from exponentially temperature dependent instanton model predictions.
