Error threshold in active steering protocols for few-qubit systems

We study active steering protocols for weakly measured qubits in the presence of error channels due to amplitude and phase noise. If the error rate is sufficiently small, the protocol approaches and stabilizes a predesignated pure target state with high fidelity and high purity, and thus implements autonomous state stabilization. We present numerical simulation results for one and two qubits, taking Andreev qubit circuits as example. As function of the error rate, a sharp threshold separates an error-correcting weak-damping regime from a strong-damping regime where the target state cannot be reached anymore. At the threshold, the purity gap closes.

Quantum description of Fermi arcs in Weyl semimetals in a magnetic field

For a Weyl semimetal (WSM) in a magnetic field, a semiclassical description of the Fermi-arc surface state dynamics is usually employed for explaining various unconventional magnetotransport phenomena, e.g., Weyl orbits, the three-dimensional Quantum Hall Effect, and the high transmission through twisted WSM interfaces. For a half-space geometry, we determine the low-energy quantum eigenstates for a four-band model of a WSM in a magnetic field perpendicular to the surface. The eigenstates correspond to in- and out-going chiral Landau level (LL) states, propagating (anti-)parallel to the field direction near different Weyl nodes, which are coupled by evanescent surface-state contributions generated by all other LLs. These replace the Fermi arc in a magnetic field. Computing the phase shift accumulated between in- and out-going chiral LL states, we compare our quantum-mechanical results to semiclassical predictions. We find quantitative agreement between both approaches.

Coulomb impurities in graphene driven by fast ions

We provide a theoretical model for electronic transitions in a two-dimensional (2D) artificial atom in a graphene monolayer. The artificial atom is due to the presence of a charged adatom (Coulomb impurity) in the layer and interacts with a fast ultrarelativistic ion moving parallel to the layer. We compute the probability and cross sections for the corresponding electronic transitions by means of an exact solution of the time-dependent 2D Dirac equation describing the interaction of the planar atom with the electromagnetic field of the ultrarelativistic projectile.

Non-Abelian anyon statistics through AC conductance of a Majorana interferometer

Demonstrating the non-Abelian Ising anyon statistics of Majorana zero modes in a physical platform still represents a major open challenge in physics. We here show that the linear low-frequency charge conductance of a Majorana interferometer containing a floating superconducting island can reveal the topological spin of quantum edge vortices. The latter are associated with chiral Majorana fermion edge modes and represent "flying" Ising anyons. We describe possible device implementations and outline how to detect non-Abelian anyon braiding through AC conductance measurements.

Mpemba effects in open nonequilibrium quantum systems

We generalize the classical thermal Mpemba effect (where an initially hot system relaxes faster to the final equilibrium state than a cold one) to open quantum systems coupled to several reservoirs. We show that, in general, two different types of quantum Mpemba effects are possible. They may be distinguished by quantum state tomography. However, the existence of a quantum Mpemba effect (without determining the type) can already be established by measuring simpler observables such as currents or energies. We illustrate our general results for the experimentally feasible case of an interacting two-site Kitaev model coupled to two metallic leads.

Local spin-flip transitions induced by magnetic quantum impurities in two-dimensional magnets

We predict a general local spin-flip transition mechanism caused by magnetic quantum impurities in (partially) polarized phases of quantum magnets in the absence of conservation laws. This transition arises when a magnon bound state crosses zero energy as function of the magnetic field. As application, we study 2D van der Waals magnets described by the Kitaev-Heisenberg honeycomb model which applies to the transition metal trihalides CrI$_3$ and $α$-RuCl$_3$. We consider adatom and substitutional impurity positions, and show how spin-flip transitions can be detected in scanning tunneling spectroscopy.

Many-body quantum dynamics of spin-orbit coupled Andreev states in a Zeeman field

We provide a theoretical framework to describe the quantum many-body dynamics of Andreev states in Josephson junctions with spin-orbit coupling and a magnetic Zeeman field. In such cases, employing a doubled Nambu spinor description is technically advantageous but one then has to be careful to avoid double-counting problems. By deriving the Lindblad master equation in the socalled excitation picture, we show that a physically consistent many-body theory free from doublecounting problems follows. We apply our formalism to a study of dynamical parity stabilization of the Andreev sector at intermediate times after an initial microwave pulse, in particular addressing the combined effects of spin-orbit coupling and Zeeman field.

Engineering unsteerable quantum states with active feedback

We propose active steering protocols for quantum state preparation in quantum circuits where each system qubit is connected to a single detector qubit, employing a simple coupling selected from a small set of steering operators. The decision is made such that the expected cost-function gain in one time step is maximized. We apply these protocols to several many-qubit models. Our results are underlined by three remarkable insights. First, we show that the standard fidelity does not give a useful cost function; instead, successful steering is achieved by including local fidelity terms. Second, although the steering dynamics acts on each system qubit separately, entanglement in the generated target state is introduced, and can be tuned at will, by performing Bell measurements on detector qubit pairs after every time step. This implements a weak-measurement variant of entanglement swapping. Third, numerical simulations suggest that the active steering protocol can reach arbitrarily designated target states, including passively unsteerable states such as the $N$-qubit W state.

Electric polarization near vortices in the extended Kitaev model

We formulate a Majorana mean-field theory for the extended $JKΓ$ Kitaev model in a magnetic Zeeman field of arbitrary direction, and apply it for studying spatially inhomogeneous states harboring vortices. This mean-field theory is exact in the pure Kitaev limit and captures the essential physics throughout the Kitaev spin liquid phase. We determine the charge profile around vortices and the corresponding quadrupole tensor. The quadrupole-quadrupole interaction between distant vortices is shown to be either repulsive or attractive, depending on parameters. We predict that electrically biased scanning probe tips enable the creation of vortices at preselected positions. Our results open new perspectives for the electric manipulation of Ising anyons in Kitaev spin liquids.

Dispersive Drumhead States in Nodal-Line Semimetal Junctions

We consider a smooth interface between a topological nodal-line semimetal and a topologically trivial insulator (e.g., the vacuum) or another semimetal with a nodal ring of different radius. Using a low-energy effective Hamiltonian including only the two crossing bands, we show that these junctions accommodate a two-dimensional zero-energy level and a set of two-dimensional dispersive bands, corresponding to states localized at the interface. We characterize the spectrum, identifying the parameter ranges in which these states are present, and highlight the role of the nodal radius and the smoothness of the interface. We also suggest material-independent ways to detect and identify these states, using optical conductivity and infrared absorption spectroscopy in magnetic field.

Dissipation driven dynamical topological phase transitions in two-dimensional superconductors

We induce and study a topological dynamical phase transition between two planar superconducting phases. Using the Lindblad equation to account for the interactions of Bogoliubov quasiparticles among themselves and with the fluctuations of the superconducting order parameter, we derive the relaxation dynamics of the order parameter. To characterize the phase transition, we compute the fidelity and the spin-Hall conductance of the open system. Our approach provides crucial informations for experimental implementations, such as the dependence of the critical time on the system-bath coupling.

Light-amplified Landau-Zener conductivity in gapped graphene monolayers: a simulacrum of photo-catalyzed vacuum instability

Interband transitions of electrons in a gapped graphene monolayer are highly stimulated near the Fermi surface when a high-frequency electric wave of weak intensity and a strong constant electric field are superposed in the plane of the flake. We consider this phenomenon equivalent to the Franz-Keldysh effect, paying particular attention to the regime where the photon energy linked to the fast-oscillating field is just below the graphene gap, so that the quantum transitions still occur through tunneling effects while being facilitated by the one-photon absorption channel. In the considered parameter regime the photo-catalyzed current linked to the described setup is shown to exceed the one driven by the strong field solely by several orders of magnitude. Conditions to relieve the impact of the field's finite extension are discussed, and a formula for the residual current density is derived. The robustness of our assessment supports the viability of detecting this phenomenon in graphene, thus providing a simulation of the dynamically-assisted Schwinger mechanism in QED.

Lindblad master equation approach to the dissipative quench dynamics of planar superconductors

We employ the Lindblad master equation method to study the nonequilibrium dynamics following a parametric quench in the Hamiltonian of an open, two-dimensional superconducting system coupled to an external bath. Within our approach we show how, in the open system, the dissipation works as an effective stabilization mechanism in the time evolution of the system after the quench. Eventually, we evidence how the mismatch between the phases corresponding to the initial and to the final state of the system determines a dynamical phase transition between the two distinct phases. Our method allows for fully characterizing the dynamical phase transition in an open system in several cases of physical relevance, by means of a combined study of the time-dependent superconducting gap and of the fidelity between density matrices.

Coulomb impurities in graphene driven by ultrashort electromagnetic pulses: Excitation, ionization, and pair creation

We provide a theory for electronic transitions induced by ultrashort electromagnetic pulses in two-dimensional artificial relativistic atoms which are created by a charged impurity in a gapped graphene monolayer. Using a non-perturbative sudden-perturbation approximation, we derive and discuss analytical expressions for the probabilities for excitation, ionization and electron-hole pair creation in this system.

Dynamics of parafermionic states in transport measurements

Advances in hybrid fractional quantum Hall (FQH)-superconductor platforms pave the way for realisation of parafermionic modes. We analyse signatures of these non-abelian anyons in transport measurements across devices with $\mathbb{Z}_6$ parafermions (PFs) coupled to an external electrode. Simulating the dynamics of these open systems by a stochastic quantum jump method, we show that a current readout over sufficiently long times constitutes a projective measurement of the fractional charge shared by two PFs. Interaction of these topological modes with the FQH environment, however, may cause poisoning events affecting this degree of freedom which we model by jump operators that describe incoherent coupling of PFs with FQH edge modes. We analyse how this gives rise to a characteristic three-level telegraph noise in the current, constituting a very strong signature of PFs. We discuss also other forms of poisoning and noise caused by interaction with fractional quasiparticles in the bulk of the Hall system. We conclude our work with an analysis of four-PF devices, in particular on how the PF fusion algebra can be observed in electrical transport experiments.

Dynamical parity selection in superconducting weak links

Excess quasiparticles play a crucial role in superconducting quantum devices ranging from qubits to quantum sensors. In this work we analyze their dynamics for phase-biased finite-length weak links with several Andreev subgap states, where the coupling to a microwave resonator allows for parity state (even/odd) readout. Our theory shows that almost perfect dynamical polarization in a given parity sector is achievable by applying a microwave pulse matching a transition in the opposite parity sector. Our results qualitatively explain key features of recent experiments on hybrid semiconducting nanowire Josephson junctions and provide theoretical guidelines for efficiently controlling the parity state of Andreev qubits.

Statistical Majorana Bound State Spectroscopy

Tunnel spectroscopy data for the detection of Majorana bound states (MBS) is often criticized for its proneness to misinterpretation of genuine MBS with low-lying Andreev bound states. Here, we suggest a protocol removing this ambiguity by extending single shot measurements to sequences performed at varying system parameters. We demonstrate how such sampling, which we argue requires only moderate effort for current experimental platforms, resolves the statistics of Andreev side lobes, thus providing compelling evidence for the presence or absence of a Majorana center peak.

Scanning tunneling spectroscopy of Majorana zero modes in a Kitaev spin liquid

We describe scanning tunneling spectroscopic signatures of Majorana zero modes (MZMs) in Kitaev spin liquids. The tunnel conductance is determined by the dynamical spin correlations of the spin liquid, which we compute exactly, and by spin-anisotropic cotunneling form factors. Near a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ vortex, the tunnel conductance has a staircase voltage dependence, where conductance steps arise from MZMs and (at higher voltages) from additional vortex configurations. By scanning the probe tip position, one can detect the vortex locations. Our analysis suggests that topological magnon bound states near defects or magnetic impurities generate spectroscopic signatures that are qualitatively different from those of MZMs.
