Failing to keep the balance: explicit formulae and topological recursion for leaky Hurwitz numbers

Recently a new family of enumerative invariants called leaky Hurwitz numbers was introduced by Cavalieri-Markwig-Ranganathan in the context of logarithmic intersection theory. They admit an interpretation via tropical covers where the balancing condition fails. We employ tropical geometry to prove a generalisation of the piecewise polynomiality of Accadia-Karev-Lewanski for leaky completed cycles Hurwitz numbers, and a different wall crossing that is cubic instead of quadratic. Using tropical combinatorics and generatingfunctionology, we also find closed formulae for one-part and two-part completed cycles leaky Hurwitz numbers in genus $0$. Working more generally with a view towards topological recursion, we use Hamiltonian flows to associate spectral curves to very general cut-and-join operators. Under mild analytic constraints, we find the appropriate spectral curves, and in case the leakiness is fixed, we show that the resulting enumerative invariants satisfy topological recursion. This provides a partial inverse to recent work of Alexandrov-Bychkov-Dunin-Barkowski-Kazarian-Shadrin producing differentials satisfying topological recursion for KP $\tau$-functions. In particular these results specialise to completed cycles leaky Hurwitz numbers.

Superconformal topological recursion

We investigate a supersymmetric generalisation of topological recursion from two perspectives: algebraic and geometric. The algebraic side concerns a recursive structure encoded in modules of a super Virasoro algebra, and the geometric counterpart is what we call superconformal topological recursion defined on a super Riemann surface. Superconformal topological recursion indicates that odd holomorphic one-forms on a super Riemann surface are related to zero modes of copies of the Clifford algebras, and it also provides a tool to study deformation of non-split super Riemann surfaces, e.g. certain families of super Riemann surfaces carrying odd parameters. On a super Riemann surface over a non-reduced base, the formalism is recursive not only in terms of pants-decomposition but also in terms of odd parameters in a suitable sense.

Highest weight vectors, shifted topological recursion and quantum curves

We extend the theory of topological recursion by considering Airy structures whose partition functions are highest weight vectors of particular $\mathcal{W}$-algebra representations. Such highest weight vectors arise as partition functions of Airy structures only under certain conditions on the representations. In the spectral curve formulation of topological recursion, we show that this generalization amounts to adding specific terms to the correlators $ \omega_{g,1}$, which leads to a ``shifted topological recursion'' formula. We then prove that the wave-functions constructed from this shifted version of topological recursion are WKB solutions of families of quantizations of the spectral curve with $ \hbar$-dependent terms. In the reverse direction, starting from an $\hbar$-connection, we find that it is of topological type if the exact same conditions that we found for the Airy structures are satisfied. When this happens, the resulting shifted loop equations can be solved by the shifted topological recursion obtained earlier.

Taking limits in topological recursion

When does topological recursion applied to a family of spectral curves commute with taking limits? This problem is subtle, especially when the ramification structure of the spectral curve changes at the limit point. We provide sufficient (straightforward-to-use) conditions for checking when the commutation with limits holds, thereby closing a gap in the literature where this compatibility has been used several times without justification. This takes the form of a stronger result of analyticity of the topological recursion along suitable families. To tackle this question, we formalise the notion of global topological recursion and provide sufficient conditions for its equivalence with local topological recursion. The global version facilitates the study of analyticity and limits. For nondegenerate algebraic curves, we reformulate these conditions purely in terms of the structure of its underlying singularities. Finally, we apply this to study deformations of $ (r,s) $-spectral curves, spectral curves for weighted Hurwitz numbers, and provide several other examples and non-examples (where the commutation with limits fails).

Topological recursion on transalgebraic spectral curves and Atlantes Hurwitz numbers

Given a spectral curve with exponential singularities (which we call a "transalgebraic spectral curve"), we extend the definition of topological recursion to include contributions from the exponential singularities in a way that is compatible with limits of sequences of spectral curves. This allows us to prove the topological recursion/quantum curve correspondence for a large class of transalgebraic spectral curves. As an application, we find that Atlantes Hurwitz numbers, which were previously thought to fall outside the scope of topological recursion, satisfy (our extended version of) topological recursion, and we construct the corresponding quantum curve directly from topological recursion.

The Spin Gromov-Witten/Hurwitz correspondence for $\mathbb{P}^1$

We study the spin Gromov-Witten (GW) theory of $\mathbb{P}^1$. Using the standard torus action on $\mathbb{P}^1$, we prove that the associated equivariant potential can be expressed by means of operator formalism and satisfies the 2-BKP hierarchy. As a consequence of this result, we prove the spin analogue of the GW/Hurwitz correspondence of Okounkov-Pandharipande for $\mathbb{P}^1$, which was conjectured by J. Lee. Finally, we prove that this correspondence for a general target spin curve follows from a conjectural degeneration formula for spin GW invariants that holds in virtual dimension 0.

KP hierarchy for Hurwitz-type cohomological field theories

We generalise a result of Kazarian regarding Kadomtsev-Petviashvili integrability for single Hodge integrals to general cohomological field theories related to Hurwitz-type counting problems or hypergeometric tau-functions. The proof uses recent results on the relations between hypergeometric tau-functions and topological recursion, as well as the Eynard-DOSS correspondence between topological recursion and cohomological field theories. In particular, we recover the result of Alexandrov of KP integrability for triple Hodge integrals with a Calabi-Yau condition.

A new spin on Hurwitz theory and ELSV via theta characteristics

We study spin Hurwitz numbers, which count ramified covers of the Riemann sphere with a sign coming from a theta characteristic. These numbers are known to be related to Gromov-Witten theory of K\"ahler surfaces and to representation theory of the Sergeev group, and are generated by BKP tau-functions. We use the latter interpretation to give polynomiality properties of these numbers and we derive a spectral curve which we conjecture computes spin Hurwitz numbers via a new type of topological recursion. We prove that this conjectural topological recursion is equivalent to an ELSV-type formula, expressing spin Hurwitz numbers in terms of the Chiodo class twisted by the $2$-spin Witten class.

Higher Airy structures and topological recursion for singular spectral curves

We give elements towards the classification of quantum Airy structures based on the $W(\mathfrak{gl}_r)$-algebras at self-dual level based on twisted modules of the Heisenberg VOA of $\mathfrak{gl}_r$ for twists by arbitrary elements of the Weyl group $\mathfrak{S}_{r}$. In particular, we construct a large class of such quantum Airy structures. We show that the system of linear ODEs forming the quantum Airy structure and determining uniquely its partition function is equivalent to a topological recursion \`a la Chekhov-Eynard-Orantin on singular spectral curves. In particular, our work extends the definition of the Bouchard-Eynard topological recursion (valid for smooth curves) to a large class of singular curves, and indicates impossibilities to extend naively the definition to other types of singularities. We also discuss relations to intersection theory on moduli spaces of curves, giving a general ELSV-type representation for the topological recursion amplitudes on smooth curves, and formulate precise conjectures for application in open $r$-spin intersection theory.

Loop equations and a proof of Zvonkine's $qr$-ELSV formula

We prove the 2006 Zvonkine conjecture that expresses Hurwitz numbers with completed cycles in terms of intersection numbers with the Chiodo classes via the so-called $r$-ELSV formula, as well as its orbifold generalization, the $qr$-ELSV formula, proposed recently in [KLPS17].

Stimulated Raman adiabatic passage-like protocols for amplitude transfer generalize to many bipartite graphs

Adiabatic passage techniques, used to drive a system from one quantum state into another, find widespread application in physics and chemistry. We focus on techniques to spatially transport a quantum amplitude over a strongly coupled system, such as STImulated Raman Adiabatic Passage (STIRAP) and Coherent Tunnelling by Adiabatic Passage (CTAP). Previous results were shown to work on certain graphs, such as linear chains, square and triangular lattices, and branched chains. We prove that similar protocols work much more generally, in a large class of (semi-)bipartite graphs. In particular, under random couplings, adiabatic transfer is possible on graphs that admit a perfect matching both when the sender is removed and when the receiver is removed. Many of the favorable stability properties of STIRAP/CTAP are inherited, and our results readily apply to transfer between multiple potential senders and receivers. We numerically test transfer between the leaves of a tree, and find surprisingly accurate transfer, especially when straddling is used. Our results may find applications in short-distance communication between multiple quantum computers, and open up a new question in graph theory about the spectral gap around the value 0.

Half-Spin Tautological Relations and Faber's Proportionalities of Kappa Classes

We employ the $1/2$-spin tautological relations to provide a particular combinatorial identity. We show that this identity is a statement equivalent to Faber's formula for proportionalities of kappa-classes on $\mathcal{M}_g$, $g\geq 2$. We then prove several cases of the combinatorial identity, providing a new proof of Faber's formula for those cases.

Cut-and-join equation for monotone Hurwitz numbers revisited

We give a new proof of the cut-and-join equation for the monotone Hurwitz numbers, derived first by Goulden, Guay-Paquet, and Novak. Our proof in particular uses a combinatorial technique developed by Han. The main interest in this particular equation is its close relation to the quadratic loop equation in the theory of spectral curve topological recursion, and we recall this motivation giving a new proof of the topological recursion for monotone Hurwitz numbers, obtained first by Do, Dyer, and Mathews.

Wall-crossing formulae and strong piecewise polynomiality for mixed Grothendieck dessins d'enfant, monotone, and simple double Hurwitz numbers

We derive explicit formulae for the generating series of mixed Grothendieck dessins d'enfant/monotone/simple Hurwitz numbers, via the semi-infinite wedge formalism. This reveals the strong piecewise polynomiality in the sense of Goulden-Jackson-Vakil, generalising a result of Johnson, and provides a new explicit proof of the piecewise polynomiality of the mixed case. Moreover, we derive wall-crossing formulae for the mixed case. These statements specialise to any of the three types of Hurwitz numbers, and to the mixed case of any pair.

Central invariants revisited

We use refined spectral sequence arguments to calculate known and previously unknown bi-Hamiltonian cohomology groups, which govern the deformation theory of semi-simple bi-Hamiltonian pencils of hydrodynamic type with one independent and \( N\) dependent variables. In particular, we rederive the result of Dubrovin-Liu-Zhang that these deformations are parametrized by the so-called central invariants, which are \( N\) smooth functions of one variable.

Towards an orbifold generalization of Zvonkine's $r$-ELSV formula

We perform a key step towards the proof of Zvonkine's conjectural $r$-ELSV formula that relates Hurwitz numbers with completed $(r+1)$-cycles to the geometry of the moduli spaces of the $r$-spin structures on curves: we prove the quasi-polynomiality property prescribed by Zvonkine's conjecture. Moreover, we propose an orbifold generalization of Zvonkine's conjecture and prove the quasi-polynomiality property in this case as well. In addition to that, we study the $(0,1)$- and $(0,2)$-functions in this generalized case and we show that these unstable cases are correctly reproduced by the spectral curve initial data.
