Dynamical phase transition in generalized Dicke model with strongly interacting trapped Rydberg ions

We study dynamical phase transitions in the generalized dissipative Dicke model in an array of trapped Rydberg ions, where their density-density interactions compete with the collective spin-phonon coupling, laser driving and dissipation. This setting offers a versatile approach to study equilibrium as well as non-equilibrium many-body phenomena, as parameters, such as the Ising interaction, laser-ion and spin-phonon coupling can be tuned. Through analyzing the mean-field phase diagram, we find a variety of distinct phases and the emergence of a tricritical point that are sensitively dependent of the interaction between Rydberg ions. We then study the quantum dynamics for a finite system size and characterize parameter dependent dynamics using the spin average, entropy, and Loschmidt echo. Distinctive signatures of the dynamical phases, such as slow relaxation and metastability, arise near the phase transition. This analysis predicts rich quantum dynamics of the finite system that link to the non-equilibrium mean-field phases. Our study widens the exploration of collective and non-equilibrium phases in Dicke models, and reveals that the Rydberg ion interaction drastically affects the phase diagram and dynamics.

Quantum dynamics of spin-J particles in static and rotating magnetic fields: Entanglement resonances and kinks

We examine the quantum dynamics of both a single spin-J particle and a pair of spin-J particles in the presence of static and rotating magnetic fields, which can be important for qudit-based quantum technologies. Notably, we find resonant, periodic oscillations between two maximally stretched states, irrespective of the value of J. Additionally, we observe periodic transitions between sublevels with magnetic quantum numbers of opposite signs. The dynamics also exhibit a periodic transfer of the spin to the maximally stretched state, starting from the ground state of the initial Hamiltonian. For a pair of spins, we derive various resonance conditions and further analyze the entanglement generated by dipole-dipole interactions. In the case of two spin-1/2 particles, the entanglement dynamics reveal resonances and kinks in the maximum entanglement, and their criteria can be obtained from the energy spectrum. Strikingly, we show that the kink can be exploited to engineer the entanglement dynamics. Finally, we briefly discuss the regime of weak dipolar interactions, which are relevant for dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates.

Faraday patterns, spin textures, spin-spin correlations and competing instabilities in a driven spin-1 antiferromagnetic Bose-Einstein condensate

We study the formation of transient Faraday patterns and spin textures in driven quasi-one-dimensional and quasi-two-dimensional spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensates under the periodic modulation of $s$-wave scattering lengths $a_0$ and $a_2$, starting from the anti-ferromagnetic phase. This phase is characterized by a Bogoliubov spectrum consisting of three modes: one mode is gapped, while the other two are gapless. When $a_0$ is modulated and half of the modulation frequency lies below the gapped mode, density and spin Faraday patterns emerge. In that case, in quasi-one-dimension, the spin texture is characterized by periodic domains of opposite $z$-polarizations. When driven above the gap, the spin texture is characterized by random orientations of spin vectors along the condensate axis. Qualitatively new features appear in the driven quasi-two-dimensional condensate. For instance, when driven above the gap, the spin textures are characterized by anomalous vortices and antivortices that do not exhibit phase winding in individual magnetic components. Below the gap, the spin texture exhibits irregular ferromagnetic patches with opposite polarizations. The spatial spin-spin correlations in quasi-one-dimension exhibit a Gaussian envelope, whereas they possess a Bessel function dependence in quasi-two-dimension. Under the $a_2$-modulation, the density patterns dominate irrespective of the driving frequency, unless the spin-dependent interaction strength is sufficiently smaller than that of the spin-independent interaction. The intriguing scenario of competing instability can emerge when both scattering lengths are simultaneously modulated. Finally, we show that the competing instabilities result in a complex relationship between the population transfer and the strength of the quadratic Zeeman field, while keeping all other parameters constant.

Observation of effects of inter-atomic interaction on Autler-Townes splitting in cold Rydberg atoms

We demonstrate the effect of inter-atomic interaction in highly excited Rydberg atoms via Autler- Townes splitting in cold atoms. We measure the Autler-Townes (AT) splitting of the 5S1/2, F=2 to 5P3/2, F'=3 transition of 87Rb atoms arising due to the strong coupling of the transition via the cooling beams used for the magneto-optical trap (MOT). The AT splitting is probed using a weakly coupled transition from 5P3/2, F'=3 state to highly excited Rydberg states for a wide range of principal quantum numbers (n = 35 - 117). We observe the AT splitting via trap-loss spectroscopy in the MOT by scanning the probe frequency. We observe a drastic increase in the broadening of the AT splitting signal as a result of interaction-induced dephasing effect in cold Rydberg atoms for highly excited Rydberg states with principal quantum number n > 100. We explain our observations using theoretical modelling and numerical simulations based on the Lindblad Master equation. We find a good agreement of the results of the numerical simulation with the experimental measurements.

Properties of Krylov state complexity in qubit dynamics

We analyze the properties of Krylov state complexity in qubit dynamics, considering a single qubit and a qubit pair. A geometrical picture of the Krylov complexity is discussed for the single-qubit case, whereas it becomes non-trivial for the two-qubit case. Considering the particular case of interacting Rydberg two-level atoms, we show that the Krylov basis obtained using an effective Hamiltonian minimizes the time-averaged spread complexity compared to that which is obtained from the original Hamiltonian. We further generalize the latter property to an arbitrary Hamiltonian in which the entire Hilbert space comprises of two subspaces provided a weak coupling between them.

Spin Phonon Relaxation Dynamics from a Conical Intersection of Trapped Rydberg Ions

Non-adiabatic processes near conical intersections are rooted in the stronger coupling between electronic and nuclear degrees of freedom. Using a system of two trapped Rydberg ions, their high polarizability and strong dipolar interactions allow to form a conical intersection, where dynamics takes place on a microsecond time scale. Rydberg lifetimes are typically from a few to tens of microseconds, which could affect the conical dynamics. We study the effect of the finite lifetime of the Rydberg state on the vibronic dynamics around the conical intersection via analyzing the master equation. Through mean field and numerical calculations, damping dynamics are found in both the phonon populations and electronic states depending on the initial states. It is found that oscillatory vibronic dynamics can be seen clearly within the Rydberg lifetime, permitting to observe the conical effect in the trapped Rydberg ion system.

Density engineering via inter-condensate dipole-dipole interactions

We study the effect of inter-condensate dipole-dipole interactions in a setup consisting of physically disconnected, single-species dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates. In particular, making use of the long-range and anisotropic nature of dipole-dipole interactions, we show that the density of a {\em target} dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate can be axially confined and engineered using a trapped {\em control} dipolar condensate. Increasing the number of control condensates leads to exotic ground state structures, including periodic patterns in the target condensate. The latter leads to a structural transition between single and double-peaked structures with coherence between the peaks controlled via the separation between the control condensates.

Commensurate supersolids and re-entrant transitions in an extended Bose-Hubbard ladder

We investigate the ground state phases of an extended Bose-Hubbard ladder of unit filling via the density-matrix-renormalization-group method and, in particular, the effect of rung-hoppings. In contrast to a single-chain, a commensurate supersolid emerges, and based on the Luttinger parameter, we classify them into two types. The latter leads to a reentrant gapless behavior as the onsite interaction is increased while keeping all other parameters intact. A reentrant gapped transition is also found as a function of nearest-neighbor interactions. Further, we show that the string order characterizing the Haldane phase vanishes for a finite inter-chain hopping amplitude, however small it is. Finally, we propose two experimental platforms to observe our findings, using either dipolar atoms or polar molecules and Rydberg admixed atoms.

Benchmarking discrete truncated Wigner approximation and neural network quantum states with the exact dynamics in a Rydberg atomic chain

We benchmark the discrete truncated Wigner approximation (DTWA) and Neural quantum states (NQS) based on restricted Boltzmann-like machines with the exact excitation and correlation dynamics in a chain of ten Rydberg atoms. The initial state is where all atoms are in their electronic ground state. We characterize the excitation dynamics using the maximum and time-averaged number of Rydberg excitations. DTWA results are different from the exact dynamics for large Rydberg-Rydberg interactions. In contrast, by increasing the number of hidden spins, the NQS can be improved but still limited to short-time dynamics. Interestingly, irrespective of interaction strengths, the time-averaged number of excitations obtained using NQS is in excellent agreement with the exact results. Concerning the calculation of quantum correlations, for instance, second-order bipartite and average two-site Rényi entropies, NQS looks more promising. Finally, we discuss the existence of a power law scaling for the initial growth of average two-site Rényi entropy.

Stripe and checkerboard patterns in a stack of driven quasi-one-dimensional dipolar condensates

The emergence of transient checkerboard and stripe patterns in a stack of driven quasi-one-dimensional homogeneous dipolar condensates is studied. The parametric driving of the $s$-wave scattering length leads to the excitation of the lowest collective Bogoliubov mode. The character of the lowest mode depends critically on the orientation of the dipoles, corresponding to out-of-phase and in-phase density modulations in neighboring condensates, resulting in checkerboard and stripe patterns. Further, we show that a dynamical transition between the checkerboard and stripe patterns can be realized by quenching the dipole orientation either linearly or abruptly once the initial pattern is formed via periodic driving.

Path Integral Monte Carlo Study of a Doubly-Dipolar Bose Gas

By combining first-principles path integral Monte Carlo methods and mean-field techniques, we explore the properties of cylindrically trapped doubly-dipolar Bose gases. We first verify the emergence of a pancake quantum droplet at low temperatures, validating previously mean-field calculations. In a regime of small doubly-dipolar interactions, first-principles calculations agree with the generalized Gross-Pitaevskii equation. Such an accordance disappears in a large interaction limit. Here the path integral Monte Carlo estimates the strong doubly-dipolar regime with accuracy. On the contrary, the Gross-Pitaevskii equation does not seize quantum fluctuations in full. We also provide a complete description of the system's quantum behavior in a wide range of parameters. When the system forms a droplet, the superfluid fraction exhibits an anisotropic behavior if compared to the usual Bose gas regime. Interestingly, we observe that the transition temperature from thermal gas to droplet results higher than that of the thermal gas to a Bose-Einstein condensate, indicating the robustness of the droplet against thermal fluctuations. Further, we investigate the anisotropic behavior of the superfluid fraction during the structural transition from a pancake to a cigar-shaped droplet by varying the ratio between electric and magnetic dipole interaction strengths. Our findings furnish evidence that the stability of doubly-dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates can be detected in experiments by means of dysprosium atoms.

Patterns, spin-spin correlations and competing instabilities in driven quasi-two-dimensional spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensates

We analyze the formation of transient patterns and spin-spin correlations in quasi-two-dimensional spin-1 homogeneous Bose-Einstein condensates subjected to parametric driving of $s$-wave scattering lengths. The dynamics for an initial ferromagnetic phase is identical to that of a scalar condensate. In contrast, intriguing dynamics emerges for an initial polar state. For instance, we show that competition exists between density patterns and spin-mixing dynamics. Dominant spin-mixing dynamics lead to a gas of polar core vortices and anti-vortices of different spin textures. The density modes of the Bogoliubov spectrum govern the wavenumber selection of Faraday patterns. The spin modes determine the vortex density and the spatial dependence of spin-spin correlation functions. When the density patterns outgrow the spin-mixing dynamics, the spin-spin correlations decay exponentially with a correlation length of the order a spin healing length; otherwise, they exhibit a Bessel function dependence. Strikingly, competing instabilities within density and spin modes emerge when both scattering lengths are modulated at different frequencies and appropriate modulation amplitudes. The competing instability leads to a superposition of density patterns or correlation functions of two distinct wavelengths. Our studies reveal that fine control over the driven dynamics can be attained by tuning interaction strengths, quadratic Zeeman field, driving frequencies, and amplitudes.

Signatures of quantum chaos of Rydberg dressed bosons in a triple-well potential

We study signatures of quantum chaos in dynamics of Rydberg dressed bosonic atoms held in a one dimensional triple-well potential. Long-range nearest-neighbor and next-nearest-neighbor interactions, induced by laser dressing atoms to strongly interacting Rydberg states, affect drastically mean field and quantum many-body dynamics. By analyzing the mean field dynamics, classical chaos regions with positive and large Lyapunov exponents are identified as a function of the potential well tilting and dressed interactions. In the quantum regime, it is found that level statistics of the eigen-energies gains a Wigner-Dyson distribution when the Lyapunov exponents are large, giving rise to signatures of strong quantum chaos. We find that both the time averaged entanglement entropy and survival probability of the initial state have distinctively large values in the quantum chaos regime. We further show that population variances could be used as an indicator of the emergence of quantum chaos. This might provide a way to directly probe quantum chaotic dynamics through analyzing population dynamics in individual potential wells.

Maximally entangled Rydberg-atom pairs via Landau-Zener sweeps

We analyze the formation of maximally entangled Rydberg atom pairs subjected to Landau-Zener sweeps of the atom-light detuning. Though the populations reach a steady value at longer times, the phases evolve continuously, leading to periodic oscillations in the entanglement entropy. The local unitary equivalence between the obtained maximally entangled states and the Bell states is verified by computing the polynomial invariants. Finally, we study the effect of spontaneous emission from the Rydberg state of rubidium atoms on the correlation dynamics and show that the oscillatory dynamics persists for high-lying Rydberg states. Our study may offer novel ways to generate maximally entangled states, quantum gates and exotic quantum matter in arrays of Rydberg atoms through Landau Zener sweeps.

Gases of doubly-dipolar particles, with both magnetic and electric dipole moments, offer intriguing novel possibilities. We show that the interplay between doubly-dipolar interactions, quantum stabilization, and external confinement results in a rich ground-state physics of supersolids and incoherent droplet arrays in doubly-dipolar condensates. Our study reveals novel possibilities for engineering quantum droplets and droplet supersolids, including supersolid-supersolid transitions and the realization of supersolid arrays of pancake droplets.

Dynamics of a Pair of Overlapping Polar Bright Solitons in Spin-1 Bose-Einstein Condensates

We analyze the dynamics of both population and spin densities, emerging from the spatial overlap between two distinct polar bright solitons in Spin-1 Spinor Condensates. The dynamics of overlapping solitons in scalar condensates exhibits soliton fusion, atomic switching from one soliton to another and repulsive dynamics depending on the extent of overlap and the relative phase between the solitons. The scalar case also helps us understand the dynamics of the vector solitons. In the spinor case, non-trivial dynamics emerge in spatial and spin degrees of freedom. In the absence of spin changing collisions, we observe Josephson-like oscillations in the population dynamics of each spin component. In this case, the population dynamics is independent of the relative phase, but the dynamics of the spin-density vector depends on it. The latter also witnesses the appearance of oscillating domain walls. The pair of overlapping polar solitons emerge as four ferromagnetic solitons irrespective of the initial phase difference for identical spin-dependent and spin-independent interaction strengths. But the dynamics of final solitons depends explicitly on the relative phase. Depending on the ratio of spin-dependent and spin-independent interaction strengths, a pair of oscillatons can also emerge as the final state. Then, increasing the extent of overlap may lead to the simultaneous formation of both a stationary ferromagnetic soltion and a pair of oscillatons depending on the relative phase.

Multipolar Fermi-surface deformation in a Rydberg-dressed Fermi gas with long-range anisotropic interactions

We study theoretically the deformation of the Fermi surface (FS) of a three-dimensional gas of Rydberg-dressed $^6$Li atoms. The laser dressing to high-lying Rydberg $D$ states results in angle-dependent soft-core-shaped interactions whose anisotropy is described by multiple spherical harmonics. We show that this can drastically modify the shape of the FS and that its deformation depends on the interplay between the Fermi momentum $k_F$ and the reciprocal momentum $\bar{k}$ corresponding to the characteristic soft-core radius of the dressing-induced potential. When $k_F< \bar{k}$, the dressed interaction stretches a spherical FS into an ellipsoid. When $k_F\gtrsim \bar{k}$, complex deformations are encountered which exhibit multipolar characteristics. We analyze the formation of Cooper pairs around the deformed FS and show that they occupy large orbital angular momentum states ($p$, $f$, and $h$ wave) coherently. Our study demonstrates that Rydberg dressing to high angular momentum states may pave a route toward the investigation of unconventional Fermi gases and multiwave superconductivity.
