Mathematical modelling of zika virus in Brazil

In this paper we study some deterministic mathematical models that seek to explain the expansion of zika virus, as a viral epidemic, using published data for Brazil. SIR type models are proposed and validated using the epidemic data found, considering several aspects in the spread of the disease. Finally, we confirmed that the crucial epidemic parameter such as $R_0$ is consistent with those previously reported in the literature for other areas. We also explored variations of the parameters within Brazil for different federal entities. We concluded that a parsimonious model that includes both human and vector populations best describe the epidemic parameters.

Prediction of trending topics using ANFIS and deterministic models

Trending topics are often the result of the spreading of information between users of social networks. These special topics can be regarded as rumors. The spreading of a rumor is often studied with the same techniques as in epidemics spreading. It is common that many datasets may not have enough measured variables, so we propose a method for studying the general behavior of the spreaders by selecting estimated variables given by the deterministic model. In order to provide a good approximation, we implemented an adaptative neuro fuzzy inference system (ANFIS). So, in our numerical experimentations, a deterministic approach using SIR and SIRS models (with delay) for two different topics is used. Thus, the authors just applied the ANFIS model for their application and the deterministic model as the preprocessing input variable.

A deterministic mathematical model for the spread of two rumors

In this paper we propose a deterministic mathematical model that attempts to explain the propagation of a rumor using SIRS type epidemiological models with temporary immunity and nonlinear incidence rate. In particular, we speculate about the dissemination of information when the so-called "complex networks" are used. The effect of introducing a second rumor, inspired by a vaccination model, in the same population of individuals, which will try to counteract the effect of the original rumor, is studied. That is a situation that occurs frequently in communities, when a rumor is counteracted by a contrary information or news, which behaves in the same way as a rumor. Furthermore, qualitative analysis and numerical experimentation of the dynamic model are performed. We corroborate that the dynamics of spreading rumors show similar behavior to that found in the dynamics of an infectious disease.

Segmented Tau Approximation for a Non-Autonomous Functional Differential Equation of Mixed Type

The segmented formulation of the Tau method is used to numerically solve the non-autonomous forward-backward functional differential equation x'(t) = a(t)x(t) + b(t)x(t-1) + c(t)x(t+1), where x is the unknown function, a, b, and c are known functions. The step by step Tau method is applied to approximate the solution of this equation by a piecewise polynomial function. A boundary value problem is posed, numerically solved, and analyzed. Also, a novel way to generate a set of non-autonomous problems with known analytical solution is provided. From it, several non-autonomous problems were constructed and resolved with the proposed method. We conclude that the good numerical results obtained in our numerical experimentation and the relative simplicity of the Tau method demonstrate that it is a promising strategy for numerically solving mixed-type problems, as presented here.
