Universal Gibbons-Hawking-York term for theories with curvature, torsion and non-metricity

Motivated by establishing holographic renormalization for gravitational theories with non-metricity and torsion, we present a new and efficient general method for calculating Gibbons-Hawking-York (GHY) terms. Our method consists of linearizing any nonlinearity in curvature, torsion or non-metricity by introducing suitable Lagrange multipliers. Moreover, we use a split formalism for differential forms, writing them in $(n-1)+1$ dimensions. The boundary terms of the action are manifest in this formalism by means of Stokes' theorem, such that the compensating GHY term for the Dirichlet problem may be read off directly. We observe that only those terms in the Lagrangian that contain curvature contribute to the GHY term. Terms polynomial solely in torsion and non-metricity do not require any GHY term compensation for the variational problem to be well-defined. We test our method by confirming existing results for Einstein-Hilbert and four-dimensional Chern-Simons modified gravity. Moreover, we obtain new results for Lovelock-Chern-Simons and metric-affine gravity. For all four examples, our new method and results contribute to a new approach towards a systematic hydrodynamic expansion for spin and hypermomentum currents within AdS/CFT.

Breitenlohner-Freedman bound on hyperbolic tilings

We establish how the Breitenlohner-Freedman (BF) bound is realized on tilings of two-dimensional Euclidean Anti-de Sitter space. For the continuum, the BF bound states that on Anti-de Sitter spaces, fluctuation modes remain stable for small negative mass-squared $m^2$. This follows from a real and positive total energy of the gravitational system. For finite cutoff $\varepsilon$, we solve the Klein-Gordon equation numerically on regular hyperbolic tilings. When $\varepsilon\to0$, we find that the continuum BF bound is approached in a manner independent of the tiling. We confirm these results via simulations of a hyperbolic electric circuit. Moreover, we propose a novel circuit including active elements that allows to further scan values of $m^2$ above the BF bound.

Hall viscosity and hydrodynamic inverse Nernst effect in graphene

Motivated by Hall viscosity measurements in graphene sheets, we study hydrodynamic transport of electrons in a channel of finite width in external electric and magnetic fields. We consider electric charge densities varying from close to the Dirac point up to the Fermi liquid regime. We find two competing contributions to the hydrodynamic Hall and inverse Nernst signals that originate from the Hall viscous and Lorentz forces. This competition leads to a non-linear dependence of the full signals on the magnetic field and even a cancellation at different critical field values for both signals. In particular, the hydrodynamic inverse Nernst signal in the Fermi liquid regime is dominated by the Hall viscous contribution. We further show that a finite channel width leads to a suppression of the Lorenz ratio, while the magnetic field enhances this ratio. All of these effects are predicted in parameter regimes accessible in experiments.

Towards Explicit Discrete Holography: Aperiodic Spin Chains from Hyperbolic Tilings

We propose a new example of discrete holography that provides a new step towards establishing the AdS/CFT duality for discrete spaces. A class of boundary Hamiltonians is obtained in a natural way from regular tilings of the hyperbolic Poincaré disk, via an inflation rule that allows to construct the tiling using concentric layers of tiles. The models in this class are aperiodic spin chains, whose sequences of couplings are obtained from the bulk inflation rule. We explicitly choose the aperiodic XXZ spin chain with spin 1/2 degrees of freedom as an example. The properties of this model are studied by using strong disorder renormalization group techniques, which provide a tensor network construction for the ground state of this spin chain. This can be regarded as discrete bulk reconstruction. Moreover we compute the entanglement entropy in this setup in two different ways: a discretization of the Ryu-Takayanagi formula and a generalization of the standard computation for the boundary aperiodic Hamiltonian. For both approaches, a logarithmic growth of the entanglement entropy in the subsystem size is identified. The coefficients, i.e. the effective central charges, depend on the bulk discretization parameters in both cases, albeit in a different way.

Charged Moments in $W_3$ Higher Spin Holography

We consider the charged moments in $SL(3,\mathbb{R})$ higher spin holography, as well as in the dual two-dimensional conformal field theory with $W_3$ symmetry. For the vacuum state and a single entangling interval, we show that the $W_3$ algebra of the conformal field theory induces an entanglement $W_3$ algebra acting on the quantum state in the entangling interval. The algebra contains a spin 3 modular charge which commutes with the modular Hamiltonian. The reduced density matrix is characterized by the modular energy and modular charge, hence our definition of the charged moments is also with respect to these conserved quantities. We evaluate the logarithm of the charged moments perturbatively in the spin 3 modular chemical potential, by computing the corresponding connected correlation functions of the modular charge operator up to quartic order in the chemical potential. This method provides access to the charged moments without using charged twist fields. Our result matches known results for the charged moment obtained from the charged topological black hole picture in $SL(3,\mathbb{R})$ higher spin gravity. Since our charged moments are not Gaussian in the chemical potential any longer, we conclude that the dual $W_3$ conformal field theories must feature breakdown of equipartition of entanglement to leading order in the large $c$ expansion.

Geometric phases distinguish entangled states in wormhole quantum mechanics

We establish a relation between entanglement in simple quantum mechanical qubit systems and in wormhole physics as considered in the context of the AdS/CFT correspondence. We show that in both cases, states with the same entanglement structure, indistinguishable by any local measurement, nevertheless are characterized by a different Berry phase. This feature is experimentally accessible in coupled qubit systems where states with different Berry phase are related by unitary transformations. In the wormhole case, these transformations are identified with a time evolution of one of the two throats.

Berry phases, wormholes and factorization in AdS/CFT

For two-dimensional holographic CFTs, we demonstrate the role of Berry phases for relating the non-factorization of the Hilbert space to the presence of wormholes. The wormholes are characterized by a non-exact symplectic form that gives rise to the Berry phase. For wormholes connecting two spacelike regions in gravitational spacetimes, we find that the non-exactness is linked to a variable appearing in the phase space of the boundary CFT. This variable corresponds to a loop integral in the bulk. Through this loop integral, non-factorization becomes apparent in the dual entangled CFTs. Furthermore, we classify Berry phases in holographic CFTs based on the type of dual bulk diffeomorphism involved. We distinguish between Virasoro, gauge and modular Berry phases, each corresponding to a spacetime wormhole geometry in the bulk. Using kinematic space, we extend a relation between the modular Hamiltonian and the Berry curvature to the finite temperature case. We find that the Berry curvature, given by the Crofton form, characterizes the topological transition of the entanglement entropy in presence of a black hole.

Quantum Complexity as Hydrodynamics

As a new step towards defining complexity for quantum field theories, we map Nielsen operator complexity for $SU(N)$ gates to two-dimensional hydrodynamics. We develop a tractable large $N$ limit that leads to regular geometries on the manifold of unitaries as $N$ is taken to infinity. To achieve this, we introduce a basis of non-commutative plane waves for the $\mathfrak{su}(N)$ algebra and define a metric with polynomial penalty factors. Through the Euler-Arnold approach we identify incompressible inviscid hydrodynamics on the two-torus as a novel effective theory of large-qudit operator complexity. For large $N$, our cost function captures two essential properties of holographic complexity measures: ergodicity and conjugate points.

Symmetry-resolved entanglement for excited states and two entangling intervals in AdS${}_3$/CFT${}_2$

We test the proposal of arXiv:2012.11274 for the holographic computation of the charged moments and the resulting symmetry-resolved entanglement entropy in different excited states, as well as for two entangling intervals. Our holographic computations are performed in $U(1)$ Chern-Simons-Einstein-Hilbert gravity, and are confirmed by independent results in a conformal field theory at large central charge. In particular, we consider two classes of excited states, corresponding to charged and uncharged conical defects in AdS${}_3$. In the conformal field theory, these states are generated by the insertion of charged and uncharged heavy operators. We employ the monodromy method to calculate the ensuing four-point function between the heavy operators and the twist fields. For the two-interval case, we derive our results on the AdS and the conformal field theory side, respectively, from the generating function method of arXiv:2012.11274, as well as the vertex operator algebra. In all cases considered, we find equipartition of entanglement between the different charge sectors. We also clarify an aspect of conformal field theories with a large central charge and $\mathfrak{u}(1)_k$ Kac-Moody symmetry used in our calculations, namely the factorization of the Hilbert space into a gravitational Virasoro sector with large central charge, and a $\mathfrak{u}(1)_k$ Kac-Moody sector.

Symmetry-Resolved Entanglement in AdS${}_3$/CFT${}_2$ coupled to $U(1)$ Chern-Simons Theory

We consider symmetry-resolved entanglement entropy in AdS${}_3$/CFT${}_2$ coupled to $U(1)$ Chern-Simons theory. We identify the holographic dual of the charged moments in the two-dimensional conformal field theory as a charged Wilson line in the bulk of AdS${}_3$, namely the Ryu-Takayanagi geodesic minimally coupled to the $U(1)$ Chern-Simons gauge field. We identify the holonomy around the Wilson line as the Aharonov-Bohm phases which, in the two-dimensional field theory, are generated by charged $U(1)$ vertex operators inserted at the endpoints of the entangling interval. Furthermore, we devise a new method to calculate the symmetry resolved entanglement entropy by relating the generating function for the charged moments to the amount of charge in the entangling subregion. We calculate the subregion charge from the $U(1)$ Chern-Simons gauge field sourced by the bulk Wilson line. We use our method to derive the symmetry-resolved entanglement entropy for Poincaré patch and global AdS${}_3$, as well as for the conical defect geometries. In all three cases, the symmetry resolved entanglement entropy is determined by the length of the Ryu-Takayanagi geodesic and the Chern-Simons level $k$, and fulfills equipartition of entanglement. The asymptotic symmetry algebra of the bulk theory is of $\hat{\mathfrak{u}}{(1)_k}$ Kac-Moody type. Employing the $\hat{\mathfrak{u}}{(1)_k}$ Kac-Moody symmetry, we confirm our holographic results by a calculation in the dual conformal field theory.

Momentum-Dependent Mass and AC Hall Conductivity of Quantum Anomalous Hall Insulators and Their Relation to the Parity Anomaly

The Dirac mass of a two-dimensional QAH insulator is directly related to the parity anomaly of planar quantum electrodynamics, as shown initially in Phys. Rev. Lett. 52, 18 (1984). In this work, we connect the additional momentum-dependent Newtonian mass term of a QAH insulator to the parity anomaly. By calculating the effective action, we reveal that the Newtonian mass term acts like a parity-breaking element of a high-energy regularization scheme. As such, it is directly related to the parity anomaly. In addition, the calculation of the effective action allows us to determine the finite frequency correction to the DC Hall conductivity of a QAH insulator. We derive that the leading order AC correction contains a term proportional to the torsional Hall viscosity. This paves the way to measure this non-dissipative transport coefficient via electrical or magneto-optical experiments. Moreover, we prove that the Newtonian mass significantly changes the resonance structure of the AC Hall conductivity in comparison to pure Dirac systems like graphene.

Holographic Superfluid Solitons with Backreaction

Solitons are important nonperturbative excitations in superfluids. For holographic superfluids, we numerically construct dark solitons that have the symmetry-restored phase at their core. A central point is that we include the gravitational back-reaction of the matter fields, which becomes important at low temperatures. We study in detail the properties of these solitons under variation of the back-reaction strength via tuning the gravitational constant. In particular, the depletion fraction of the particle number density at the core of the solitons is carefully investigated. In agreement with the probe-limit analysis, the depletion fraction shows the same qualitative behavior as in Bogoliubov-de Gennes (BdG) theory, even if the back-reaction is included. We find that the depletion decreases with increasing back-reaction strength. Moreover, the inclusion of back-reaction enables us to obtain the effective energy density of solitons within holography, which together with an evaluation of the surface tension leads to a simple physical explanation for the snake instability of dark solitons.

Functional dependence of the Hall viscosity-induced transverse voltage in two-dimensional Fermi liquids

The breaking of parity and time-reversal symmetry in two-dimensional Fermi liquids gives rise to non-dissipative transport features characterized by the Hall viscosity. In magnetic fields, the Hall viscous force directly competes with the Lorentz force, since both mechanisms contribute to the Hall voltage. In this work, we present a channel geometry that allows us to uniquely distinguish these two contributions and derive, for the first time, their functional dependency on all external parameters. We show that the ratio of the Hall viscous to the Lorentz force contribution is negative and that its modulus decreases with increasing width, slip-length and carrier density, while it increases with the electron-electron mean free path of our channel. In typical materials such as GaAs the Hall viscous contribution can dominate the Lorentz signal up to a few tens of millitesla until the total Hall voltage vanishes and subsequently is overcome by the Lorentz contribution. Moreover, we prove that the total Hall electric field is parabolic due to Lorentz effects, whereas the offset of this parabola is characterized by the Hall viscosity. Hence, our results pave the way to measure and identify the Hall viscosity via both global and local voltage measurements.
