Stationary localized structures and the effect of the delayed feedback in the Brusselator model

The Brusselator reaction-diffusion model is a paradigm for the understanding of dissipative structures in systems out of equilibrium. In the first part of this paper, we investigate the formation of stationary localized structures in the Brusselator model. By using numerical continuation methods in two spatial dimensions, we establish a bifurcation diagram showing the emergence of localized spots. We characterize the transition from a single spot to an extended pattern in the form of squares. In the second part, we incorporate delayed feedback control and show that delayed feedback can induce a spontaneous motion of both localized and periodic dissipative structures. We characterize this motion by estimating the threshold and the velocity of the moving dissipative structures.

Localized states in bistable pattern forming systems

We present an unifying description of a new class of localized states, appearing as large amplitude peaks nucleating over a pattern of lower amplitude. Localized states are pinned over a lattice spontaneously generated by the system itself. We show that the phenomenon is generic and requires only the coexistence of two spatially periodic states. At the onset of the spatial bifurcation, a forced amplitude equation is derived for the critical modes, which accounts for the appearance of localized peaks

On a liquid drop "falling" inside a heavier miscible fluid

We report a new type of drop instability, where the density difference between the drop and the solvent is negative. We show that the drop falls inside the solvent down to a minimum height, then fragmentation takes place and secondary droplets rise up to the surface. We have developed a theoretical model that captures the essential of the phenomenon and predicts the correct scalings for the rise-up time and the minimum height.
