Inflation of the screening length induced by Bjerrum pairs

Within a modified Poisson-Boltzmann theory we study the effect of Bjerrum pairs on the typical length scale $1/\barκ$ over which electric fields are screened in electrolyte solutions, taking into account a simple association-dissociation equilibrium between free ions and Bjerrum pairs. At low densities of Bjerrum pairs, this length scale is well approximated by the Debye length $1/κ\propto 1/\sqrt{ρ_\mathrm{s}}$, with $ρ_\mathrm{s}$ the free ion density. At high densities of Bjerrum pairs, however, we find $1/\barκ\propto \sqrt{ρ_\mathrm{s}}$ which is significantly larger than $1/κ$ due to the enhanced effective permittivity of the electrolyte, caused by the polarization of Bjerrum pairs. We argue that this mechanism may explain the recently observed anomalously large colloid-free zones between an oil-dispersed colloidal crystal and a colloidal monolayer at the oil-water interface.

Effective shape and phase behaviour of short charged rods

We explicitly calculate the orientation-dependent second virial coefficient of short charged rods in an electrolytic solvent, assuming the rod-rod interactions to be a pairwise sum of hard-core and segmental screened-Coulomb repulsions. From the parallel and isotropically averaged second virial coefficient, we calculate the effective length and diameter of the rods, for charges and screening lengths that vary over several orders of magnitude. Using these effective dimensions, we determine the phase diagram, where we distinguish a low-charge and strong-screening regime with a liquid crystalline nematic and smectic phase, and a high-charge and weak-screening regime with a plastic crystal phase in the phase diagram.

Stability of additive-free water-in-oil emulsions

We calculate ion distributions near a planar oil-water interface within non-linear Poisson-Boltzmann theory, taking into account the Born self-energy of the ions in the two media. For unequal self-energies of cations and anions, a spontaneous charge separation is found such that the water and oil phase become oppositely charged, in slabs with a typical thickness of the Debye screening length in the two media. From the analytical solutions, the corresponding interfacial charge density and the contribution to the interfacial tension is derived, together with an estimate for the Yukawa-potential between two spherical water droplets in oil. The parameter regime is explored where the plasma coupling parameter exceeds the crystallization threshold, i.e. where the droplets are expected to form crystalline structures due to a strong Yukawa repulsion, as recently observed experimentally. Extensions of the theory that we discuss briefly include numerical calculations on spherical water droplets in oil, and analytical calculations of the linear PB-equation for a finite oil-water interfacial width.

Destructed double-layer and ionic charge separation near the oil-water interface

We study suspensions of hydrophobic charged colloidal spheres dispersed in a demixed oil-water mixture by means of a modified Poisson-Boltzmann theory, taking into account image charge effects and partitioning of the monovalent ions. We find that the ion's aversion for oil can destroy the double layers of the oil-dispersed colloids. This affects the salt-concentration dependence of the colloidal adsorption to the oil-water interface qualitatively. The theory also predicts a narrow range of the oil-dielectric constant in which micron-sized water-in-oil droplets acquire enough charge to crystallize at volume fractions as small as $\sim 10^{-3}$ in the absence of colloids. These findings explain recent observations [M.E. Leunissen {\em et al.}, Proc. Nat. Ac. Sci {\bf 104}, 2585 (2007)].

Isotropic-nematic transition in hard-rod fluids: relation between continuous and restricted-orientation models

We explore models of hard-rod fluids with a finite number of allowed orientations, and construct their bulk phase diagrams within Onsager's second virial theory. For a one-component fluid, we show that the discretization of the orientations leads to the existence of an artificial (almost) perfectly aligned nematic phase, which coexists with the (physical) nematic phase if the number of orientations is sufficiently large, or with the isotropic phase if the number of orientations is small. Its appearance correlates with the accuracy of sampling the nematic orientation distribution within its typical opening angle. For a binary mixture this artificial phase also exists, and a much larger number of orientations is required to shift it to such high densities that it does not interfere with the physical part of the phase diagram.
