Thin-Shell Black Bounce

A recently proposed class of black-bounce solutions sourced by anisotropic fluids, whose exterior reproduces the Reissner-Nordström geometry all the way down to a minimal-area bounce, was put forward by Lessa and Olmo. In this work, we show that this solution conceals a thin-shell structure precisely at the bounce. Motivated by this observation, we construct a new class of black-bounce solutions with static, spherical symmetry featuring the emergence of a minimal-area bounce supported by a thin shell. This nontrivial topological structure is shown to arise from the degeneracy of the metric at the bounce, where the inverse metric becomes ill-defined, leading to curvature tensors with distributional discontinuities precisely at that point. As a consequence, a delta-function thin shell of energy-condition-violating matter is necessarily present at the bounce. To generate such solutions, we draw on proposals from quantum gravity that predict the existence of a fundamental minimum length scale, employing energy density profiles that encode these quantum-gravitational effects in an effective manner, replacing the point-like description of matter at minimal-length scales with a smeared one. We consider two well-motivated profiles, of Lorentzian and Gaussian type, to generate a novel class of solutions exhibiting the features of either regular black holes or wormholes, whose center conceals a thin-shell bounce. In addition, we investigate the thermodynamics of these compact objects.

Charged particles and fields in bumblebee gravity: Periodic orbits and superradiance

We investigate the dynamics of charged particles and fields in the background of a charged black hole in bumblebee gravity, aiming to better understand the role played by the Lorentz-violating parameter $l$. We first review the derivation of the charged bumblebee black hole and investigate its main physical and geometrical properties. We then obtain the circular and bound trajectories of charged particles and find that the innermost stable circular orbit increases with $l$. By using a numerical approach, we compute the total absorption cross section for arbitrary values of the scalar wave frequency $ω$. Since the spacetime is not asymptotically flat, we construct the total absorption cross section by taking into account the modified asymptotic momentum and flux. Analytical approximations are derived in the low- and high-frequency regimes. The low-frequency expression displays a transition velocity that separates two distinct asymptotic branches and generalizes the corresponding Reissner-Nordström result. Our numerical results for the cross section agree with the analytical approximations in their corresponding limits, and the absorption parameter space can be divided into three regions: Unbounded absorption, bounded absorption, and bounded superradiance. In particular, superradiance occurs whenever $ω<ω_{c}$, where $ω_{c}$ is the threshold for superradiance. Moreover, the superradiance amplification decreases as we increase $l$, and charged bumblebee black holes with $l < 0$ lead to greater superradiant scattering than in the Reissner-Nordström case. We also note that although increasing $l$ lowers the potential barrier, it reduces the total absorption cross section because of the geometrical factor $1/(1+l)$ present in the cross section formula.

Non-minimal matter sector couplings in Lorentz-violating gravity: Self-consistent traversable wormholes and quasinormal modes

The anisotropies induced by Lorentz-violating fields pose significant challenges for the search for compact objects in non-vacuum environments. In this work, nevertheless, we demonstrate that introducing couplings between Lorentz-violating fields and matter allows a remarkable class of spacetimes: traversable wormholes. Specifically, we consider additional couplings in the Lagrangian of a phantom scalar field and derive Ellis-Bronnikov spacetime analogs in a Lorentz-violating scenario where both a vector field and an antisymmetric rank-2 tensor field spontaneously acquire non-zero vacuum expectation values. Despite the distinct nature of these fields, their non-zero vacuum expectation values contribute additively to the overall effect on the phantom distribution and on the resulting line element. Moreover, to probe the effects of the Lorentz violation in these spacetimes, we consider scalar perturbations lying in these spacetimes either coupled to the Lorentz-violating fields or minimally coupled to the metric. Notably, the additional Lorentz-violating couplings can alter scalar field dynamics so that perturbations propagate as if in a General Relativity background, thereby allowing for some traits of Lorentz violation to remain hidden. We compute the quasinormal mode spectra of these perturbations using three methods: direct integration, the 6th-order WKB approximation, and the Prony method, finding strong agreement among the results.

Hairy black holes via gravitational decoupling: light rings, absorption and spectral lines

We investigate the absorption of massless scalar waves by three distinct hairy black hole solutions obtained through the gravitational decoupling method, considering the weak, the strong or the dominant energy conditions. Remarkably, in certain configurations of hairy black holes associated with the fulfillment of the weak energy condition, quasibound states may appear, resulting in Breit-Wigner-like resonances in their absorption profile. These quasibound states (and consequently the spectral lines in the absorption spectrum) can be related to stable light rings in the spacetime, a structure often associated with horizonless exotic compact objects, such as wormholes. We investigate how the gravitational decoupling method introduces novel light ring structures in hairy black holes and influences the absorption spectra through its deformation parameters. Our numerical results show excellent agreement with well-known approximations.

Spectral lines of dirty wormholes

Astrophysical objects like black holes are usually surrounded by matter in the form of accretion disks or jets of matter. These astrophysical scenarios are expected to introduce novel phenomenology in the scattering of particles and fields. Wormholes are viable candidates for exotic compact objects that can mimic some black hole properties. Hence, it is natural to wonder what would happen if the central astrophysical object were a wormhole, instead of a black hole. We investigate the astrophysical environment effect on the absorption of a massless scalar field by a dirty wormhole surrounded by a thick shell of matter. We study null geodesics around these dirty wormholes and analyze under which conditions new pairs of light rings can appear. The presence of new stable light rings allows new quasibound states in the spacetime, apart from the ones trapped near the throat. Thus, the astrophysical environment can introduce deviations in the absorption bands. Remarkably, although heavy and dense distributions of matter are considered surrounding the wormhole, the position of most of the spectral lines in the absorption bands is preserved, indicating that the astrophysical environment cannot hide some fingerprints of the central object.

On the self-consistency of compact objects in Lorentz-violating gravity theories

Self-consistent solutions in Lorentz-violating gravity theories require the simultaneous satisfaction of: (i) the corresponding Einstein field equations, (ii) the matter field equations, and (iii) the Lorentz-violating field equations. In vacuum states, the dynamics of Lorentz-violating tensor fields may reduce to geometric constraints, potentially precluding entire classes of compact objects. These constraints are crucial for ensuring physical consistency in Lorentz-violating frameworks, as they eliminate metric families incompatible with the anisotropies induced by spontaneous Lorentz symmetry breaking. We investigate the criteria governing the emergence of these geometric constraints and analyze their consequences. Our analysis establishes a consistency framework for evaluating compact objects in these theories, demonstrating that several previously reported solutions in Lorentz-violating gravity models are physically inadmissible.

Resolving space-time singularities in spherically symmetric black holes: geodesic completeness, curvature scalars, and tidal forces

The existence of black holes in the Universe is nowadays established on the grounds of a blench of astrophysical observations, most notably those of gravitational waves from binary mergers and the imaging of supermassive objects at the heart of M87 and Milky Way galaxies. However, this success of Einstein's General Relativity~(GR) to connect theory of black holes with observations is also the source of its doom, since Penrose's theorem proves that, under physically sensible conditions, the development of a space-time singularity (as defined by the existence of a focal point for some geodesic paths in finite affine time) within black holes as described by GR is unavoidable. In this work, we thoroughly study how to resolve space-time singularities in spherically symmetric black holes. To do it so we find the conditions on the metric functions required for the restoration of geodesic completeness without any regards to the specific theory of the gravitational and matter fields supporting the amended metric. Our discussion considers both the usual trivial radial coordinate case and the bouncing radial function case and arrives to two mechanisms for this restoration: either the focal point is displaced to infinite affine distance or a bounce prevents the focusing of geodesics. Several explicit examples of well known (in)complete space-times are given. Furthermore, we consider the connection of geodesic (in)completeness with another criterion frequently used in the literature to monitor singular space-times: the blow up of (some sets of) curvature scalars and the infinite tidal forces they could bring with them, and discuss the conditions required for the harmlessness upon physical observers according to each criterion.

Wormholes in Lorentz-violating gravity

We investigate the possibility of obtaining traversable wormholes supported by phantom scalar fields in Lorentz-violating gravity with an antisymmetric rank-2 tensor with a non-zero vacuum expectation value non-minimally coupled to the curvature tensor. This Lorentz violation framework shows to be a suitable scenario to search for wormhole solutions in the presence of Lorentz violation, since it introduces mild constraints on the areal radius. The vacuum expectation value of the antisymmetric rank-2 tensor, nonetheless, imposes constraints on the lapse function. As a consequence, under the vacuum configuration adopted, the allowed lapse functions can be either constant, linear or quadratic, depending on the self-interaction potential that drives the spontaneous breaking of the Lorentz symmetry. Thus, we find the Ellis-Bronnikov counterpart in this Lorentz-violating scenario as well as Lorentz-violating wormholes with a Rindler-type acceleration and an effective cosmological constant. Properties of these wormholes, such as their non-flat asymptotics, are investigated.

Singular space-times with bounded algebraic curvature scalars

We show that the absence of unbounded algebraic curvature invariants constructed from polynomials of the Riemann tensor cannot guarantee the absence of strong singularities. As a consequence, it is not sufficient to rely solely on the analysis of such scalars to assess the regularity of a given space-time. This conclusion follows from the analysis of incomplete geodesics within the internal region of asymmetric wormholes supported by scalar matter which arise in two distinct metric-affine gravity theories. These wormholes have bounded algebraic curvature scalars everywhere, which highlights that their finiteness does not prevent the emergence of pathologies (singularities) in the geodesic structure of space-time. By analyzing the tidal forces in the internal wormhole region, we find that the angular components are unbounded along incomplete radial time-like geodesics. The strength of the singularity is determined by the evolution of Jacobi fields along such geodesics, finding that it is of strong type, as volume elements are torn apart as the singularity is approached. Lastly, and for completeness, we consider the wormhole of the quadratic Palatini theory and present an analysis of the tidal forces in the entire space-time.

Echoes from bounded universes

We construct a general class of modified Ellis wormholes, where one asymptotic Minkowski region is replaced by a bounded 2-sphere core, characterized by asymptotic finite areal radius. We pursue an in-depth analysis of the resulting geometry, outlining that geodesic completeness is guaranteed also when the radial function asymptotically shrinks to zero. Then, we study the evolution of scalar perturbations, bringing out how these geometric configurations can in principle affect the time-domain profiles of quasinormal modes, pointing out the distinctive features with respect to other black holes or wormholes geometries.

Asymmetric wormholes in Palatini $f(\mathcal{R})$ gravity: Energy conditions, absorption and quasibound states

We investigate the absorption properties of reflection-asymmetric wormholes constructed via the thin-shell formalism in Palatini $f({\cal R})$ gravity. Such wormholes come from the matching of two Reissner-Nordström spacetimes at a time-like hypersurface (shell), which, according to the junction conditions in Palatini $f({\cal R})$ gravity, can have positive or negative energy density. Using numerical methods we investigate several configurations that satisfy the junction conditions, and analyze how the parameters of the system affect the absorption spectra. We confirm that the absorption cross section of wormholes at low frequencies significantly departs from that of black holes, and observe that in configurations made out of two naked singularities, the absorption spectra exhibit new features due to the effective light ring associated to the wormhole throat. The possibility of observing the presence of resonances at high frequencies is also discussed.

Parametrized black holes: Scattering investigation

We study the scattering of light-like geodesics and massless scalar waves by a static Konoplya-Zhidenko black hole, considering the case that the parametrized black hole solution contains a single deformation parameter. By performing a geodesic analysis, we compute the classical differential scattering cross section and probe the influence of the deformation parameter on null trajectories. Moreover, we investigate the propagation of a massless scalar field in the vicinity of the static Konoplya-Zhidenko black hole and use the plane waves formalism to compute the differential scattering cross section. We confront our numerical results in the backward direction with the glory approximation, finding excellent agreement. We compare the results for the deformed black hole with the Schwarzschild case, finding that the additional parameter has an important role in the behavior of the scattering process for moderate-to-high scattering angles.

Compact objects in quadratic Palatini gravity generated by a free scalar field

We study the correspondence that connects the space of solutions of General Relativity (GR) with that of Ricci-based Gravity theories (RBGs) of the $f(R,Q)$ type in the metric-affine formulation, where $Q=R_{(μν)}R^{(μν)}$. We focus on the case of scalar matter and show that when one considers a free massless scalar in the GR frame, important simplifications arise that allow to establish the correspondence for arbitrary $f(R,Q)$ Lagrangian. We particularize the analysis to a quadratic $f(R,Q)$ theory and use the spherically symmetric, static solution of Jannis-Newman-Winicour as seed to generate new compact objects in our target theory. We find that two different types of solutions emerge, one representing naked singularities and another corresponding to asymmetric wormholes with bounded curvature scalars everywhere. The latter solutions, nonetheless, are geodesically incomplete.

Scattering by deformed black holes

Obtaining black hole solutions in alternative theories of gravity can be a difficult task due to cumbersome field equations that arise in many of such theories. In order to study the strong field regime in a model-free approach, one can consider deformed black hole solutions with additional parameters beyond mass, charge and angular momentum. We investigate the scattering and absorption of a massless scalar field by non-Schwarzschild black holes, considering the Johannsen and Psaltis parametrization. In particular, we study the scattering process by the classical (null geodesics analysis), semiclassical (glory approximation) and partial waves approaches. We present the formalism needed to compute the scattering and absorption of massless scalar waves by Schwarzschild-like black holes with a set of deformation parameters in addition to their mass and present a selection of our results. We compare our numerical results for the scattering cross section with the classical and semiclassical results, obtaining excellent agreement.

Schwarzschild-like black holes: Light-like trajectories and massless scalar absorption

Black holes are among the most intriguing objects in nature. They are believed to be fully described by General Relativity (GR), and the astrophysical black holes are expected to belong to the Kerr family, obeying the no-hair theorems. Alternative theories of gravity or parameterized deviations of GR allow black hole solutions, which have additional parameters other than mass and angular momentum. We analyze a Schwarzschild-like metric, proposed by Johannsen and Psaltis, characterized by its mass and a deformation parameter. We compute the absorption cross section of massless scalar waves for different values of this deformation parameter and compare it with the corresponding scalar absorption cross section of the Schwarzschild black hole. We also present analytical approximations for the absorption cross section in the high-frequency regime. We check the consistence of our results comparing the numerical and analytical approaches, finding excellent agreement.

Absorption by deformed black holes

Alternative theories of gravity and the parameterized deviation approach allow black hole solutions to have additional parameters beyond mass, charge and angular momentum. Matter fields could be, in principle, affected by the additional parameters of these solutions. We compute the absorption cross section of massless spin-0 waves by static Konoplya-Zhidenko black holes, characterized by a deformation parameter introduced in the mass term, and compare it with the well-known absorption of a Schwarzschild black hole with the same mass. We compare our numerical results with the sinc approximation in the high-frequency limit, finding excellent agreement.
