Perturbiner methods in scattering amplitudes

Berends--Giele currents have recently attracted renewed attention across the amplitude community, appearing in new contexts ranging from gravitational amplitudes to cosmological correlators and string theory. They can be derived from first principles using the perturbiner method, a thirty-year-old framework that organizes tree-level scattering data in the form of classical multi-particle solutions to field theory equations of motion. After its rediscovery about a decade ago, it has been systematically studied and applied in many different domains. This review aims to provide a pedagogical introduction to the method, covering its basic formulation across a broad but certainly not exhaustive range of models and progressing to some of the most recent findings in the literature. This includes several unpublished results, many of which represent tacit knowledge of the community that has not previously appeared in print.

A field-inspired derivation of open string amplitudes

We propose a new method for computing $N$-point tree-level open string amplitudes, inspired by the field-theoretical perturbiner framework and bypassing world-sheet moduli integration. The construction rests on a weak associativity condition for a point-split, on-shell product of string vertices, introducing a binary-tree prescription with all physical channels manifest. The output is a multi-parametric series representation of the partial amplitude that is amenable to mass-level truncation and, therefore, numerical implementation. Besides the Veneziano amplitude, automatically represented by a dual-channel series with one free parameter, we present its five-point generalization, involving two free parameters and matched against known results in the literature. Higher multiplicities are obtained via the same systematic branching, with no separate input.

On the amplitude expansion of gluon correlators in $\textrm{AdS}_4$

We show that tree-level gluon correlators in $\textrm{AdS}_4$ admit a natural expansion in terms of flat-space scattering amplitudes at all multiplicities. In particular, every $n$-point correlator can be decomposed into a sum over energy poles whose residues are flat-space amplitudes. The $n$-point amplitude encodes the flat-space limit while curvature corrections are captured by lower-point amplitudes with merged external data. The merging of external polarizations is recursively defined via an AdS analogue of the Berends-Giele currents, giving rise to all-multiplicity formulae which we verify against Feynman diagram computations up to five points. Crucially, our approach works at the level of full correlators rather than individual diagrams, providing an elegant and transparent alternative to conventional approaches for computing correlators in anti-de Sitter space.

On-shell representation and further instances of the 2-split behavior of amplitudes

The newly discovered splitting behavior of tree-level scattering amplitudes of particles and strings has been expressed in terms of currents containing one off-shell leg. In this work, we explain how to obtain on-shell representations of the split amplitudes in different theories. Furthermore, we show that this 2-split behavior is also verified in gauge and gravity theories involving higher-dimensional operators, thereby providing additional evidence to its universal character. As a byproduct, we also generalize the transmuting operators to amplitudes in higher-derivative theories.

Four-dimensional spectrum generating algebra for the superstring

We derive the spectrum generating algebra for the hybrid string with manifest $\mathcal{N}=1$ super Poincaré symmetry in $\mathbb{R}^{3,1}\times\mathbb{R}^{6}$. Our DDF operators establish a one-to-one correspondence with the conventional superstring spectrum, while making its four-dimensional structure manifest. We also discuss part of the antifield spectrum, and introduce a simple realization of the supersymmetry charges involving the $\mathbb{R}^{6}$ directions. As an application, we algebraically compute the helicity partition function. These results provide new tools for analyzing four-dimensional on-shell superspaces and may extend naturally to phenomenologically relevant compactifications.

Perturbative Unitarity Calls for An Action

In this work, we investigate the consistency of a perturbative definition of the S-matrix in a particular class of non-Lagrangian theories. We focus on the $p$-form theories proposed in \cite{Broccoli:2021pvv}, which are fully defined by "third-way" consistent equations of motion. Using the perturbiner method, we show that the unitarity is absent even at the tree level. We then pin down a unique modification of the equations of motion that restores unitarity. The trade-off is the reinstatement of an underlying Lagrangian, which we recognize as the higher-dimensional generalization of the Freedman-Townsend (FT) model. Finally, we discuss conserved currents in third-way theories and show they all follow from parent currents in the FT model. In particular, we point out the existence of a higher-ranked global symmetry, which signals that the FT model is compatible with the existence of brane-like charged objects in higher dimensions.

Tension between string amplitude prescriptions with presumed spacetime supersymmetry

We analyze an alternative prescription for computing tree level scattering amplitudes in the pure spinor superstring. Proposed by Berkovits, and inspired by an earlier work by Lee and Siegel, it bypasses the traditional ghost number three measure of the pure spinor ghosts, $\langleλ^3 θ^5\rangle$=1, arguably simplifying the calculation. However, direct computations using the free field OPEs of the target superspace CFT fail to reproduce the expected $\textrm{SL}(2,\mathbb{C})$ invariance of tree level correlators. This persistent mismatch, confirmed through independent methods, is not compatible with the gauge invariance of the amplitude. We also discuss possible implications for the B-RNS-GSS formalism of the superstring.

One-loop $N$-point correlators in pure gravity

In this work we propose a simple algebraic recursion for the complete one-loop integrands of $N$-graviton correlators. This formula automatically yields the correct symmetry factors of individual diagrams, taking into account both the graviton and the ghost loop, and seamlessly controlling the related combinatorics.

Strings as particle arrays

These notes discuss the emergence of the Polyakov action from the low-energy limit of an array of relativistic particles with harmonic interactions, which is suggestive of a ``microscopic'' description of string theory.

Massive strings from a haunted field theory

In this work we present the $α'$-exact background equations of motion of the bosonic chiral string (also known as Hohm-Siegel-Zwiebach model), with the spin two ghost fields integrated out. This is the first instance of a worldsheet model in which all corrections are fully determined in a generic curved spacetime. As a concrete cross-check, we find complete agreement between all three-point and a sample of four-point tree level scattering amplitudes computed using field theory methods and the chiral string prescription. These equations of motion provide a field theoretical shortcut to compute worldsheet correlators in conventional bosonic strings (with arbitrary number of massless and mass level one states), and outline a new perspective on massive resonances in string theory.

One-loop off-shell amplitudes from classical equations of motion

In this letter we present a recursive method for computing one-loop off-shell amplitudes in colored quantum field theories. First, we generalize the perturbiner method by recasting the multiparticle currents as generators of off-shell tree level amplitudes. After, by taking advantage of the underlying color structure, we define a consistent sewing procedure to iteratively compute the one-loop integrands. When gauge symmetries are involved, the whole procedure is extended to multiparticle solutions involving ghosts, which can then be accounted for in the full loop computation. Since the required input here is equations of motion and gauge symmetry, our framework naturally extends to one-loop computations in certain non-Lagrangian field theories.

New recursions for tree-level correlators in (Anti) de Sitter space

We present for the first time classical multiparticle solutions in Anti de Sitter space (AdS) involving scalars, gluons, and gravitons. They are recursively defined through multiparticle currents which reduce to Berends-Giele currents in the flat space limit. This construction exposes a compact definition of tree-level boundary correlators using a general prescription that removes unphysical boundary contributions. Similarly to the flat space perturbiner, a convenient gauge choice leads to a scalar basis for all degrees of freedom, while the tensor structure is exclusively captured by field theory vertices. This provides a fully automated way to compute AdS boundary correlators to any multiplicity and cosmological wavefunction coefficients after Wick-rotating to de Sitter space.

Quantum wires, Chern-Simons theory, and dualities in the quantum Hall system

Over the years, many theoretical frameworks have been developed to understand the remarkable physics of the quantum Hall system. In this work we discuss the interplay among quantum wires, Chern-Simons theory, bosonization, and particle-vortex duality, which enable a unified approach for the Laughlin states of the fractional quantum Hall system. Starting from the so-called quantum wires system, which is a semi-microscopic description in terms of 1+1 dimensional theories, we discuss the emergence of 2+1 dimensional low-energy effective field theories by using different maps connecting the microscopic degrees of freedom with the macroscopic ones. We show the origin of these maps by embedding the bosonized version of the original quantum wires model in a gauge invariant theory and using particle vortex-duality.

Effective Field Theories and Cosmological Scattering Equations

We propose worldsheet formulae for wavefunction coefficients of the massive non-linear sigma model (NLSM), scalar Dirac-Born-Infeld (DBI), and special Galileon (sGal) theories in de Sitter momentum space in terms of the recently proposed cosmological scattering equations constructed from conformal generators in the future boundary. The four-point integrands are assembled from simple building blocks and we identify a double copy prescription mapping the NLSM wavefunction coefficient to the DBI and sGal wavefunction coefficients, including mass deformations and curvature corrections. Finally, we compute the soft limits of these wavefunction coefficients and find that they can be written in terms of boundary conformal generators acting on contact diagrams.

Cosmological Scattering Equations at Tree-level and One-loop

We recently proposed a formula for tree-level $n$-point correlators of massive $ϕ^4$ theory in de Sitter momentum space which consists of an integral over $n$ punctures on the Riemann sphere and differential operators in the future boundary dubbed the cosmological scattering equations. This formula was explicitly checked up to six points via a map to Witten diagrams using the global residue theorem. In this work we provide further details of these calculations and present an alternative formulation based on a double cover of the Riemann sphere. This framework can be used to derive simple graphical rules for evaluating the integrals more efficiently. Using these rules, we check the validity of our formula up to eight points and sketch the derivation of $n$-point correlators. Finally, we propose a similar formula for 1-loop $n$-point correlators in terms of an integral over $(n+2)$ punctures on the Riemann sphere, which we verify at four points. The 1-loop formula holds for small masses in de Sitter space and arbitrary masses satisfying the Breitenlohner-Freedman bound after Wick-rotating to Anti-de Sitter space.

Asymmetrically twisted strings

In this letter a new class of twisted strings is presented, with an asymmetry between the holomorphic and antiholomorphic sectors parametrized by an integer $N$. Their physical content is given by the massless resonances of the closed string plus the mass-level $N$ spectrum of the open string. The appeal of this model is the singling out of the (higher spin) massive levels of string theory together with their self/gauge/gravity interactions. Motivated by the original tree level Kawai-Lewellen-Tye relation for closed strings, its asymmetrically twisted version at four points is conjectured and shown to naturally interpolate with conventional and twisted strings. The resulting four-point amplitudes have a generalized Virasoro-Shapiro dressing factor.

Cosmological Scattering Equations

We propose a worldsheet formula for tree-level correlation functions describing a scalar field with arbitrary mass and quartic self-interaction in de Sitter space, which is a simple model for inflationary cosmology. The correlation functions are located on the future boundary of the spacetime and are Fourier-transformed to momentum space. Our formula is supported on mass-deformed scattering equations involving conformal generators in momentum space and reduces to the CHY formula for $ϕ^4$ amplitudes in the flat space limit. Using the global residue theorem, we verify that it reproduces the Witten diagram expansion at four and six points, and sketch the extension to $n$ points.

Multiparticle solutions to Einstein's equations

In this letter we present the first multiparticle solutions to Einstein's field equations in the presence of matter. These solutions are iteratively obtained via the perturbiner method, which can circumvent gravity's infinite number of vertices with the definition of a multiparticle expansion for the inverse spacetime metric as well. Our construction provides a simple layout for the computation of tree level field theory amplitudes in $D$ spacetime dimensions involving any number of gravitons and matter fields, with or without supersymmetry.
