IIB String Theory and Sequestered Inflation

We develop sequestered inflation models, where inflation occurs along flat directions in supergravity models derived from type IIB string theory. It is compactified on a ${\mathbb{T}^6 \over \mathbb{Z}_2 \times \mathbb{Z}_2}$ orientifold with generalized fluxes and O3/O7-planes. At Step I, we use flux potentials which 1) satisfy tadpole cancellation conditions and 2) have supersymmetric Minkowski vacua with flat direction(s). The 7 moduli are split into heavy and massless Goldstone multiplets. At Step II we add a nilpotent multiplet and uplift the flat direction(s) of the type IIB string theory to phenomenological inflationary plateau potentials: $α$-attractors with 7 discrete values $3α= 1, 2, 3, ..., 7$. Their cosmological predictions are determined by the hyperbolic geometry inherited from string theory. The masses of the heavy fields and the volume of the extra dimensions change during inflation, but this does not affect the inflationary dynamics.

Quantization of Gravity in the Black Hole Background

We perform a covariant (Lagrangian) quantization of perturbative gravity in the background of a Schwarzschild black hole. The key tool is a decomposition of the field into spherical harmonics. We fix Regge-Wheeler gauge for modes with angular momentum quantum number $l \geq 2$, while for low multipole modes with $l$ $=$ $0$ or $1$ -- for which Regge-Wheeler gauge is inapplicable -- we propose a set of gauge fixing conditions which are 2D background covariant and perturbatively well-defined. We find that the corresponding Faddeev-Popov ghosts are non-propagating for the $l\geq2$ modes, but are in general nontrivial for the low multipole modes with $l = 0,1$. However, in Schwarzschild coordinates, all time derivatives acting on the ghosts drop from the action and the low multipole ghosts have instantaneous propagators. Up to possible subtleties related to quantizing gravity in a space with a horizon, Faddeev's theorem suggests the possibility of an underlying canonical (Hamiltonian) quantization with a manifestly ghost-free Hilbert space.

Quantization of Gravity in Spherical Harmonic Basis

We perform canonical quantization of gravity in the background of a Schwarzschild black hole in the generalized Regge-Wheeler gauge proposed in \cite{Kallosh:2021ors}. We find that the Hamiltonian at the quadratic level is unitary and ghost-free. Two canonical degrees of freedom are associated with Zerilli-Moncrief and Cunningham-Price-Moncrief functions of the metric perturbations. The ${\ell }<2$ part of the Hamiltonian vanishes. This quantization with the unitary Hamiltonian for gravity is valid also in Minkowski space in spherical coordinates.

M-theory Cosmology, Octonions, Error Correcting Codes

We study M-theory compactified on twisted 7-tori with $G_2$-holonomy. The effective 4d supergravity has 7 chiral multiplets, each with a unit logarithmic Kähler potential. We propose octonion, Fano plane based superpotentials, codifying the error correcting Hamming (7,4) code. The corresponding 7-moduli models have Minkowski vacua with one flat direction. We also propose superpotentials based on octonions/error correcting codes for Minkowski vacua models with two flat directions. We update phenomenological $α$-attractor models of inflation with $3α=7,6,5,4,3,1$, based on inflation along these flat directions. These inflationary models reproduce the benchmark targets for detecting B-modes, predicting 7 different values of $r = 12α/N_{e}^{2}$ in the range $10^{-2}\gtrsim r \gtrsim 10^{-3}$, to be explored by future cosmological observations.

Sequestered Inflation

We construct supergravity models allowing to sequester the phenomenology of inflation from the Planckian energy scale physics. The procedure consists of two steps: At Step I we study supergravity models, which might be associated with string theory or M-theory, and have supersymmetric Minkowski vacua with flat directions. At Step II we uplift these flat directions to inflationary plateau potentials. We find certain conditions which ensure that the superheavy fields involved in the stabilization of the Minkowski vacua at Step I are completely decoupled from the inflationary phenomenology.

M-theory, Black Holes and Cosmology

This paper is dedicated to Mike Duff on the occasion of his 70th birthday. I discuss some issues of M-theory/string theory/supergravity closely related to Mike's interests. I describe a relation between STU black hole entropy, Cayley hyperdeterminant, Bhargava cube and a 3-qubit Alice, Bob, Charlie triality symmetry. I shortly describe my recent work with Gunaydin, Linde, Yamada on M-theory cosmology, inspired by the work of Duff with Ferrara and Borsten, Levay, Marrani et al. Here we have 7-qubits, a party including Alice, Bob, Charlie, Daisy, Emma, Fred, George. Octonions and Hamming error correcting codes are at the base of these models. They lead to 7 benchmark targets of future CMB missions looking for primordial gravitational wave from inflation. I also show puzzling relations between the fermion mass eigenvalues in these cosmological models, exceptional Jordan eigenvalue problem, and black hole entropy. The symmetry of our cosmological models is illustrated by beautiful pictures of a Coxeter projection of the root system of E7.

Mass Production of IIA and IIB dS Vacua

We describe several applications of the recently proposed mass production procedure, where multiple moduli are stabilized in a dS vacuum, in supergravity models inspired by string theory. The construction involves a small downshift of an initial supersymmetric Minkowski minimum to a supersymmetric AdS minimum, and a consequent small uplift to a dS minimum. Our type IIA examples include dS stabilization in a 7-moduli model with $[SL(2, \mathbb{R})]^7$ tree level symmetry, and its simplified version, a 3-moduli STU model. In these models, we use uplifting anti-D6 branes. In type IIB models, we present 2- and 3-moduli examples of stable dS vacua in CY three-folds, with an uplifting anti-D3 brane. These include K3 fibration models, a CICY model and a multi-hole Swiss cheese model. We also address the issue whether this procedure is limited to a very small parameter range or if large deviations from the progenitor Minkowski vacuum are possible.

de Sitter Minima from M theory and String theory

We study M-theory compactification on ${\mathbb{T}^7/ \mathbb{Z}_2^3}$ in the presence of a seven-flux, metric fluxes and KK monopoles. The effective four-dimensional supergravity has seven chiral multiplets whose couplings are specified by the $G_2$-structure of the internal manifold. We supplement the corresponding superpotential by a KKLT type non-perturbative exponential contribution for all, or for some of the seven moduli, and find a discrete set of supersymmetric Minkowski minima. We also study type IIA and type IIB string theory compactified on ${\mathbb{T}^6/ \mathbb{Z}_2^2}$. In type IIA, we use a six-flux, geometric fluxes and non-perturbative exponents. In type IIB theory, we use F and H fluxes, and non-geometric Q and P fluxes, corresponding to consistently gauged supergravity with certain embedding tensor components, \emph{without non-perturbative exponents}. Also in these situations, we produce discrete Minkowski minima. Finally, to construct dS vacua starting from these Minkowski progenitors, we follow the procedure of mass production of dS vacua.

Mass Production of Type IIA dS Vacua

A three-step procedure is proposed in type IIA string theory to stabilize multiple moduli in a dS vacuum. The first step is to construct a progenitor model with a localized stable supersymmetric Minkowski vacuum, or a discrete set of such vacua. It can be done, for example, using two non-perturbative exponents in the superpotential for each modulus, as in the KL model. A large set of supersymmetric Minkowski vacua with strongly stabilized moduli is protected by a theorem on stability of these vacua in absence of flat directions. The second step involves a parametrically small downshift to a supersymmetric AdS vacuum, which can be achieved by a small change of the superpotential. The third step is an uplift to a dS vacuum with a positive cosmological constant using the $\overline {D6}$-brane contribution. Stability of the resulting dS vacuum is inherited from the stability of the original supersymmetric Minkowski vacuum if the supersymmetry breaking in dS vacuum is parametrically small.

Uplifting Anti-D6-brane

A simple, KKLT-like construction of de Sitter vacua in type IIA string theory is presented in an STU model with guidance from string theory U-duality and with an uplifting anti-D6-brane. In four dimensions the model is reduced to $\mathcal{N}=1$ supergravity with three chiral multiplets, namely $S$, $T$ and $U$, as well as one nilpotent multiplet representing the anti-D6-brane.

Supersymmetry constraints on U-duality invariant deformations of $N \geq 5$ Supergravity

Candidate counterterms break E7 type U-duality symmetry of $N \geq 5$ supergravity theories in four dimensions \cite{Kallosh:2011dp}. A proposal was made in \cite{Bossard:2011ij} to restore it, starting with a double set of vector fields and argued that a supersymmetric extension of their proposal should exist. We show that the extra vectors, needed for the deformation, can not be auxiliary fields in an eventual off-shell formulation $N \geq 5$ supergravity, assuming that such a formulation exists. Furthermore we show that these extra vector fields can not be dynamical either since that changes the unitary supermultiplets underlying these theories and requires one to go beyond the standard framework of extended simple supergravities. To show this we list all relevant unitary conformal supermultiplets of $SU(2,2|N+n)$. We find that doubling of vectors consistent with linearized supersymmetry requires to change the number of scalars, violating the coset structure of the theory, and also to add a finite number of higher spin fields, which do not admit consistent couplings to theories with spins $\leq 2$. Thus, the proposed duality restoring deformation along the lines of \cite{Bossard:2011ij} can not be implemented within the standard framework of extended supergravity theories. We argue therefore that, in the absence of anomalies, E7 type duality together with supersymmetry, might protect $N \geq 5$ supergravity from UV divergences, in particular, $N=5$ supergravity at 4 loops in d=4.

On hilltop and brane inflation after Planck

Hilltop inflation models are often described by potentials $V = V_{0}(1-{ϕ^{n}\over m^{n}}+...)$. The omitted terms indicated by ellipsis do not affect inflation for $m \lesssim 1$, but the most popular models with $n =2$ and $4$ for $m \lesssim 1$ are ruled out observationally. Meanwhile in the large $m$ limit the results of the calculations of the tensor to scalar ratio $r$ in the models with $V = V_{0}(1-{ϕ^{n}\over m^{n}})$, for all $n$, converge to $r= 4/N \lesssim 0.07$, as in chaotic inflation with $V \sim ϕ$, suggesting a reasonably good fit to the Planck data. We show, however, that this is an artifact related to the inconsistency of the model $V = V_{0}(1-{ϕ^{n}\over m^{n}})$ at $ϕ> m$. Consistent generalizations of this model in the large $m$ limit typically lead to a much greater value $r= 8/N$, which negatively affects the observational status of hilltop inflation. Similar results are valid for D-brane inflation with $V = V_{0}(1-{m^{n}\over ϕ^{n}})$, but consistent generalizations of D-brane inflation models may successfully complement $α$-attractors in describing most of the area in the ($n_{s}$, $r$) space favored by Planck 2018.

B-mode Targets

The CMB-S4 Science Book, Astro2020 Science White Paper on gravitational waves, and PICO report contain an extensive discussion of many ongoing and planned efforts in the search for gravitational waved produced by inflation. Here we give a short executive summary of the results obtained in our recent papers, which specify the simplest available inflationary models providing physically motivated targets for these searches. Our conclusions are specific for the $10^{-3} \lesssim r \lesssim 10^{-2}$ range, where we present the B-mode benchmarks of the U-duality symmetric class of $α$-attractors, and for $ r \lesssim 10^{-3}$, where we present B-mode targets, for which the future precision measurements of $n_s$ will be decisive. We show that a combination of the simplest $α$-attractors and KKLTI models of D-brane inflation covers most of the area favored by Planck 2018.

dS Supergravity from 10d

We consider flux compactification of type II string theory with local sources on SU(3)-structure manifolds. By adding pseudo-calibrated anti-$Dp$-branes wrapped on supersymmetric cycles we generalize all existing models so that the effective $d=4,$ ${\cal N}=1$ supergravity now includes a nilpotent multiplet. We present a new dictionary between string theory models and K{ä}hler potential $K$ and superpotential $W$ for these dS supergravities with a nilpotent multiplet and non-linearly realized local supersymmetry. In addition to KKLT and LVS with uplifting $\overline{D3}$-branes, we have now new models with uplifting $\overline{D5}$, $\overline{D6}$, $\overline{D7}$, $\overline{D9}$-branes. The new uplifting contribution to the supergravity potential due to Volkov-Akulov supersymmetry is universal. As one application of our general result, we study classical flux compactifications of type IIA supergravity and find that a previously discovered universal tachyon is now absent.

The Action with Manifest E7 Type Symmetry

We generalize Cremmer-Julia 1st order action of $N=8$ supergravity with manifest $E_{7(7)}$ symmetry to cases of $N=6$ with manifest $SO^*(12)$ and $N=5$ with manifest $SU(1,5)$ duality symmetries. These U dualities belong to groups of type E7 which do not admit a symmetric bilinear invariant for vector fields. Therefore the 2d order classical action derived from the one with manifest E7 type duality has a ghost vector field which, under appropriate boundary conditions, decouples. We show that when classical $N\geq 5$ supergravities are deformed by a candidate UV divergence the ghost field does not decouple. Therefore we argue that U duality and supersymmetry suggest an explanation of the mysterious cancellation of UV infinities at $L=4$, $N=5$ in d=4. The same reasoning implies that, in absence of duality and supersymmetry anomalies, which still require a better understanding, $N\geq 5$ perturbative supergravities may be UV finite at higher-loops.

Simple Sinflaton-less $α$-attractors

We construct the simplest inflationary $α$-attractor models in supergravity: it has only one scalar, the inflaton. There is no sinflaton since the inflaton belongs to an orthogonal nilpotent superfield where the sinflaton depends on fermion bilinears. When the local supersymmetry is gauge-fixed, these models have only one single real scalar (the inflaton), a graviton and a massive gravitino. The sinflaton, sgoldstino and inflatino are all absent from the physical spectrum in the unitary gauge. The orthogonality condition leads to the simplest Kähler potential for the inflaton, while preserving the Poincaré disk geometry of $α$-attractors. The models are particularly simple in the framework of the $\overline {D3}$ induced geometric inflation.

dS Vacua and the Swampland

In this note we revisit some of the recent 10d and 4d arguments suggesting that uplifting of supersymmetric AdS vacua leads to flattening of the potential, preventing formation of dS vacua. We explain why the corresponding 10d approach is inconclusive and requires considerable modifications. We also show that while the flattening effects may occur for some extreme values of the parameters, they do not prevent the formation of dS vacua within the range of validity of the 4d KKLT models. The KL version of the KKLT scenario based on a racetrack superpotential requires parametrically small uplifting, which is not affected by flattening. We show that this scenario is compatible with the weak gravity conjecture for a broad choice of parameters of the KL model. Thus, the results of our analysis do not support the recent swampland conjecture.

Gaugino Condensation and Geometry of the Perfect Square

Gaugino condensation plays a crucial role in the formation of dS vacua. However, the theory of this effect is still incomplete. In 4d the perfect square nature of gaugino couplings follows from the square of auxiliaries in the supergravity action. We explain here why the supersymmetric non-Abelian Dp-brane action, which is the basis for the theory of 10d gaugino condensation, must have a 4-gaugino coupling. This term in the Einstein-Yang-Mills 10d supergravity is a part of the perfect square, mixing a 3-form with gaugino bilinear. The perfect square term follows from the superspace geometry, being a square of the superspace torsion. The supercovariant equation of motion for gaugino on the non-Abelian Dp-brane also involves a supertorsion in agreement with the perfect square term in the action.
