Visions in Quantum Gravity

To deepen our understanding of Quantum Gravity and its connections with black holes and cosmology, building a common language and exchanging ideas across different approaches is crucial. The Nordita Program "Quantum Gravity: from gravitational effective field theories to ultraviolet complete approaches" created a platform for extensive discussions, aimed at pinpointing both common grounds and sources of disagreements, with the hope of generating ideas and driving progress in the field. This contribution summarizes the twelve topical discussions held during the program and collects individual thoughts of speakers and panelists on the future of the field in light of these discussions.

Simulating CDT quantum gravity

We provide a hands-on introduction to Monte Carlo simulations in nonperturbative lattice quantum gravity, formulated in terms of Causal Dynamical Triangulations (CDT). We describe explicitly the implementation of Monte Carlo moves and the associated detailed-balance equations in two and three spacetime dimensions. We discuss how to optimize data storage and retrieval, which are nontrivial due to the dynamical nature of the lattices, and how to reconstruct the full geometry from selected stored data. Various aspects of the simulation, including tuning, thermalization and the measurement of observables are also treated. An associated open-source C++ implementation code is freely available online.

Spherically symmetric solutions of the $λ$-R model

We derive spherically symmetric solutions of the classical λ-R model, a minimal, anisotropic modification of general relativity with a preferred foliation and two local degrees of freedom. Starting from a 3 + 1 decomposition of the four-metric in a general spherically symmetric ansatz, we perform a phase space analysis of the reduced model. We show that its constraint algebra is consistent with that of the full λ-R model, and also yields a constant mean curvature or maximal slicing condition as a tertiary constraint. Although the solutions contain the standard Schwarzschild geometry for the general relativistic value λ= 1 or for vanishing mean extrinsic curvature K, they are in general non-static, incompatible with asymptotic flatness and parametrized not only by a conserved mass. We show by explicit computation that the four-dimensional Ricci scalar of the solutions is in general time-dependent and nonvanishing.

Locally Causal Dynamical Triangulations in Two Dimensions

We analyze the universal properties of a new two-dimensional quantum gravity model defined in terms of Locally Causal Dynamical Triangulations (LCDT). Measuring the Hausdorff and spectral dimensions of the dynamical geometrical ensemble, we find numerical evidence that the continuum limit of the model lies in a new universality class of two-dimensional quantum gravity theories, inequivalent to both Euclidean and Causal Dynamical Triangulations.

Coupling a Point-Like Mass to Quantum Gravity with Causal Dynamical Triangulations

We present a possibility of coupling a point-like, non-singular, mass distribution to four-dimensional quantum gravity in the nonperturbative setting of causal dynamical triangulations (CDT). In order to provide a point of comparison for the classical limit of the matter-coupled CDT model, we derive the spatial volume profile of the Euclidean Schwarzschild-de Sitter space glued to an interior matter solution. The volume profile is calculated with respect to a specific proper-time foliation matching the global time slicing present in CDT. It deviates in a characteristic manner from that of the pure-gravity model. The appearance of coordinate caustics and the compactness of the mass distribution in lattice units put an upper bound on the total mass for which these calculations are expected to be valid. We also discuss some of the implementation details for numerically measuring the expectation value of the volume profiles in the framework of CDT when coupled appropriately to the matter source.

Quantum gravity as sum over spacetimes

A major unsolved problem in theoretical physics is to reconcile the classical theory of general relativity with quantum mechanics. These lectures will deal with an attempt to describe quantum gravity as a path integral over geometries known as "Causal Dynamical Triangulations" (CDT).
