Optical spectroscopy of high redshift BL Lac objects

BL Lac objects (BLL) are defined by the presence of very weak (typically $<$ 5 {\AA}) or even absent spectral lines. This makes determining their distance particularly challenging, especially at high redshift, where the sources are fainter and the host galaxy contribution in the optical band becomes negligible. Yet measuring their distance is crucial for deriving and modelling their luminosity, notably in the gamma-ray band, where BLLs dominate the extragalactic sky. In this work, we re-examine the reported high-redshift (z $>$ 0.6) BLL, many of which are commonly cited in the literature despite appearing questionable. We present new spectra for 52 objects obtained with the 10.4 m GTC. For 16 of them we propose a new redshift, or provide a spectroscopic lower limit, while for 14 sources we confirm previously published values. In 22 cases the spectra remain featureless, even with high S/N observations. These objects are likely to lie at 0.3 $<$ z $<$ 1.4 : the lack of host-galaxy features sets a lower limit to their distance, while the absence of intervening absorption systems argues against substantially higher redshifts. We compare our findings with the previous robustly established cases of BLLs at z $>$ 0.6 that meet our selection criteria.

Gravity anomaly from laboratory experiments to astrophysics

Modifications to Newtonian dynamics at low accelerations have long been proposed as an alternative to dark matter to explain galaxy rotation curves. More recently, similar corrections have been invoked to interpret anomalies in Cavendish-type laboratory experiments and in the dynamics of wide binary stars, although the latter remain affected by ongoing observational debate. We show that, if deviations from Newtonian gravity occur in the low-acceleration regime, the available data are broadly consistent with a MOND-like interpretation. In this framework, wide binary systems appear to extend the Tully-Fisher relation, well established for galaxies, to much smaller mass scales. Taken together, departures from Newtonian predictions at low accelerations in galaxies, wide binaries, and laboratory experiments may point to a common physical scenario.

Swift Observations of Gaia BH3

We present UV and X-ray observations, obtained with the Swift Observatory, of Gaia BH3 a binary system containing a 33 solar masses black hole discovered through Gaia astrometry. The system is well detected in all UV and optical filters (1700-6500 Å). We compare our results with the modeling of the non collapsed component using synthetic stellar libraries, a good agreement is found with our UV observations

The Spectra of IceCube Neutrino (SIN) candidate sources -- V. Modeling and interpretation of multiwavelength and neutrino data

A correlation has been reported between the arrival directions of high-energy IceCube events and gamma-ray blazars classified as intermediate- and high-synchrotron-peaked BL Lacs. Subsequent studies have investigated the optical properties of these sources, analyzed public multiwavelength data, and constrained their individual neutrino emission based on public IceCube data. In this work, we provide a theoretical interpretation of public multiwavelength and neutrino point source data for the 32 BL Lac objects in the sample previously associated with an IceCube alert event. We have performed particle interaction modeling using open-source numerical simulation software. We constrained the model parameters using a novel and unique approach that simultaneously describes the host galaxy contribution, the observed synchrotron peak, the multiwavelength fluxes, and the IceCube point source constraints. We show that a single-zone leptohadronic model can describe the multiwavelength fluxes from the 32 IceCube candidates. In some cases, the model suggests that hadronic emission may contribute a considerable fraction of the gamma-ray flux. The required power in relativistic protons ranges from a few percent to a factor of ten of the Eddington luminosity, which is energetically less demanding compared to other leptohadronic blazar models in recent literature. The model can describe the 68% confidence level IceCube flux for a large fraction of the masquerading BL Lacs in the sample, including TXS 0506+056; whereas, for true BL Lacs, the model predicts a low neutrino flux in the IceCube sensitivity range. The predicted neutrino flux peaks between a few PeV and 100 PeV and scales positively with the flux in the GeV, MeV, X-ray, and optical bands. Based on these results, we provide a list of the brightest neutrino emitters, which can be used for future searches targeting the 10-100 PeV regime.

Changing Look of the optical spectrum of the MeV Blazar PKS 0446+112 (4FGL J0449.1+1121)

Following the high activity of the gamma-ray Fermi source 4FGL J0449.1+1121 (PKS 0446+112), possibly associated with a IceCube neutrino event IC-240105A, we obtained optical spectroscopy with the Gran Telescopio Canarias of the counterpart. We detect a clear emission line at 3830 Ang identified as Ly$α$ that confirms the redshift of source at z=2.153. Comparing with previous spectroscopy, we find an increase of the continuum by a factor $\sim$10, and a significant decrease of the CIV 1550 emission line flux by a factor $\sim$5. This produces a dramatic drop of the Equivalent Width from $\sim$20 Ang to 0.8 Ang, which is suggestive of a very high jet activity. The Full Width Half Maximum of the emission lines are midway (1000 - 2000 km/s) between those typical of the broad and narrow regions of quasars. Based on this, the source classification is intermediate between Flat Spectrum Radio Quasar and BL Lac object.

Spectroscopy of a Sample of Unidentified Gamma-ray Fermi Sources

The fourth-DR3 version (4FGL-DR3) of the Fermi/LAT catalogue of $γ$-ray sources contains $\sim$ 1000 objects at a galactic latitude |b| > 10$^{\circ}$ which are not identified with an optical counterpart (UGS). We performed a systematic study of these sources, focusing on 190 objects that have a unique X-ray counterpart in the available Swift/XRT observations. Optical counterparts are then selected, and for 33 sources optical spectra were found in the literature. We found that 21 can be classified as BL Lac objects. Among these we were able to provide the redshift for 8 of them while for 2 others we established a lower limit to the redshift by detecting intervening absorption. The other 12 objects display optical spectra with prominent emission lines (0.036<z<1.65). These spectra are characterized by both broad and narrow emission lines with the exception of 3 sources. One of them displays only broad emission lines, while the other two exclusively exhibit narrow lines. On the basis of the radio/optical flux ratio, all BL Lac objects in this study are radio loud. Four sources out of the 12 with prominent emission lines can be classified as radio loud, while at least 5 of the 12 sources with prominent lines are radio quiet. This is somewhat unexpected comparing with the radio-loudness distribution of the 4FGL-associated blazars.

The spectra of IceCube Neutrino (SIN) candidate sources -- III. Optical spectroscopy and source characterization of the full sample

A correlation between astrophysical high-energy neutrinos and blazars has been suggested by various authors. In particular, a likely association between IceCube events and intermediate and high-energy peaked BL Lac objects has led to a sample of 47 objects having a high probability of being neutrino sources. In the first paper of this series we reported optical spectroscopy of 17 objects, which together with data taken from the literature covered 80 per cent of the sample. Here we present spectroscopy obtained at large aperture telescopes of a further 17 objects (plus four additional targets), which completes the sample coverage. For twelve objects we are able to determine the redshift (0.07 < z <1.6), while for the others we set a lower limit on it, based on either the robust detection of intervening absorption systems or on an estimation derived from the absence of spectral signatures of the host galaxy. With these new data we expand and reinforce the main results of our previous papers, namely the fact that in terms of their broad-band properties our sources appear to be indistinguishable from the rest of the blazar population and the relatively large (>34 per cent and possibly as high as 80 per cent) fraction of masquerading BL Lac objects, for which the low equivalent width of the emission lines is due to the brightness of the boosted continuum, rather than being an intrinsic property, in our sample.

On the Orbital Velocity of Isolated Galaxy Pairs: II Accurate MOND Predictions

Examining a catalogue of isolated galaxy pairs, a preferred orbital intervelocity of ~150 km/s was recently reported. This discovery is difficult to reconcile with the expectations from Newtonian numerical simulations of cosmological structure formations. In a previous paper we have shown that a preferred intervelocity for galaxy pairs is expected in Modified Newtonian Dynamics (MOND). Here a detailed analysis of the MOND predictions is presented, showing that a remarkable agreement with the observations can be achieved for a mass to light ratio M/L~1 in solar units. This agrees with the expectations for a typical stellar population, without requiring non-baryonic dark matter for these systems.

On the Orbital Velocity of Isolated Galaxy Pairs: a test of gravity in the low acceleration regime

The dynamics of isolated galaxy pairs represents an important tool to investigate the behavior of gravity in the low acceleration regime. Statistical analysis of a large sample of galaxy pairs led to the noticeable discovery of a region of preferred 3-dimensional velocities centered at $\sim 150$ km/s and $\sim 100$ km/s wide, a feature hard to justify in the context of numerical simulations of cosmological structure formation. It is shown here that such a feature is expected within the framework of the Modified Newtonian Dynamics, which, however, predicts it to be centered at $\sim$ 170 Km/s.

Predictions of TeV emission for a set of hard BL Lac objects

We focus our analysis on 55 BL Lac objects with a hard Fermi gamma-ray spectrum, and for which a redshift or a lower limit to it has been determined by a previous study of ours. We extrapolate the spectral fits given by the 4FGL catalogue to the VHE band (>0.1 TeV), which can be explored by imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes. Furthermore, we take into account the absorption due to the extragalactic background light, strongly depending on the redshift. Finally, we compare our results with publicly available sensitivity curves for a selection of imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescope arrays currently operating or under construction. From our extrapolations and simulations we find a large number of promising candidates for observation with the forthcoming Cherenkov Telescope Array observatory.

The spectra of IceCube neutrino candidate sources -- I. Optical spectroscopy of blazars

There is mounting evidence that ultra-energetic neutrinos of astrophysical origin may be associated with blazars. Here we investigate a unique sample of 47 blazars, $\sim 20$ of which could be new neutrino sources. In particular, we focus on 17 objects of yet unknown redshift, for which we present optical spectroscopy secured at the Gran Telescopio Canarias and the ESO Very Large Telescope. We find all sources but one (a quasar) to be BL Lac objects. For nine targets we are able to determine the redshift (0.09~$<$~z~$<$~1.6), while for the others we set a lower limit on it, based on either the robust detection of intervening absorption systems or on an estimation derived from the absence of spectral signatures of the host galaxy. In some spectra we detect forbidden and semi-forbidden emission lines with luminosities in the range $10^{40} - 10^{41}$ erg s$^{-1}$. We also report on the spectroscopy of seven blazars possibly associated with energetic neutrinos that partially meet the criteria of our sample and are discussed in the Appendix. These results represent the starting point of our investigation into the real nature of these objects and their likelihood of being neutrino emitters.

MICADO PSF-Reconstruction work package description

The point spread function reconstruction (PSF-R) capability is a deliverable of the MICADO@ESO-ELT project. The PSF-R team works on the implementation of the instrument software devoted to reconstruct the point spread function (PSF), independently of the science data, using adaptive optics (AO) telemetry data, both for Single Conjugate (SCAO) and Multi-Conjugate Adaptive Optics (MCAO) mode of the MICADO camera and spectrograph. The PSF-R application will provide reconstructed PSFs through an archive querying system to restore the telemetry data synchronous to each science frame that MICADO will generate. Eventually, the PSF-R software will produce the output according to user specifications. The PSF-R service will support the state-of-the-art scientific analysis of the MICADO imaging and spectroscopic data.

Low-redshift quasars in the SDSS Stripe 82 II: associated companion galaxies and signature of star formation

We present optical spectroscopy of the close companions of 22 low redshift (z<0.5) quasars (QSO) selected from a larger sample of QSO in the SDSS Stripe82 region for which both the host galaxy and the large scale environments have been investigated in our previous work. The new observations extend the number of QSO studied in our previous paper on close companion galaxies of 12 quasars. Our analysis here covers all 34 quasars from both this work and the previously published paper. We find that half of them (15 QSO; $\sim$44%) have at least one associated galaxy. Many (12 galaxies; $\sim$67%) of the associated companions exhibit [OII] 3727 A emission line as signature of recent star formation. The star formation rate (SFR) of these galaxies is modest (median SFR $\sim$ 4.3 M$_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$). For 8 QSO we are also able to detect the starlight of the host galaxy from which 3 have a typical spectrum of a post-starburst galaxy. Our results suggest that quasars do not have a strong influence on the star formation of their companion galaxies.

The circum-galactic medium of quasars: transverse and line-of-sight absorptions

Quasar projected pairs (QPPs) can be used for investigating the circumgalactic medium of quasars through the study of intervening absorption lines in the spectrum of the background quasar that are at the same redshift of the foreground quasar. Here we report on optical spectroscopy, gathered at Gran Telescopio Canarias, of 14 QPPs. In 7 cases we find MgII absorption lines associated with the foreground quasar. Only for two cases line-of-sight absorptions (LOS) are revealed. These new observations complement our previous study performed on other 30 QPPs. A brief discussion of the properties of the intervening absorption lines associated with the foreground quasar for the full dataset is reported.

Optical spectroscopy of BL Lac objects: TeV candidates

We investigate the spectroscopic optical properties of gamma-ray sources detected with high significance above 50 GeV in the Third Catalog of Hard Fermi-LAT Sources (3FHL) and that are good candidates as TeV emitters. We focus on the 91 sources that are labelled by the Fermi team as BL Lac objects (BLL) or Blazar candidates of uncertain type (BCU) , that are in the Northern hemisphere, and are with unknown or uncertain redshift. We report here on GTC spectra (in the spectral range 4100 - 7750 AA) of 13 BCU and 42 BLL. We are able to classify the observed targets as BLL and each source is briefly discussed. The spectra allowed us to determine the redshift of 25 objects on the basis of emission and/or absorption lines, finding 0.05 < z < 0.91. Most of the emission lines detected are due to forbidden transition of [O III] and [N II]. The observed line luminosity is found lower than that of QSOs at similar continuum and could be reconciled with the line-continuum luminosity relationship of QSOs if a significant beaming factor is assumed. Moreover for 5 sources we found intervening absorption lines that allows to set a spectroscopic lower limit of the redshift. For the remaining 25 sources, for which the spectra are lineless, a lower limit to z is given, assuming that the host galaxies are giant ellipticals.

The redshift and the host galaxy of the neutrino candidate 4FGL J0955.1+3551 (3HSP J095507.9+355101)

The BL Lac object 4FGLJ0955.1+3551 has been suggested as a possible source of ultra energetic neutrinos detected by the Icecube observatory. The target was observed in January 2020 at the Large Binocular Telescope. Our spectroscopy (4100-8500 Ang) yields a firm redshift z = 0.557 as deduced by the absorption lines of the host galaxy. The upper limit of the minimum equivalent width on emission lines is 0.3 Ang. From the source image we are able to resolve the host galaxy for which we measure an absolute magnitude M(R) = -22.9 and Re = 8 kpc, that is values which are typical of the host galaxies of BL Lacs.

Optical spectroscopic survey of a sample of Unidentified Fermi objects: II

We report on optical spectroscopy obtained at the 10.4m Gran Telescopio Canarias of 28 Fermi gamma-ray sources that completes the study of a sample of 60 targets of unidentified objects for which the detection of an X-ray and/or radio source inside the 3FGL error box is available. The observations are aimed to characterize the nature and measure the redshift of these sources. For all optical counterparts, the observations allow us to establish their AGN nature. In particular, we found 24 BL Lac objects, one QSO, one NLSy1 and two objects showing spectral features typical of Seyfert 2 galaxies. For most of them, we determine a spectroscopic redshift, while for five we can set lower limits based on the lack of stellar features from the host galaxy. The global properties of the full sample are briefly discussed.

Hierarchichal-segmented AO in order to attain wide field compensation in the visible on an 8m class telescope

We describe the preliminary optimized layout for a partially optimized concept of an optical-8m class VLT-like 2x2 segmented camera where each channel is assisted by an equivalent of an MCAO system where the ground layer correction is commonly employed while the high altitude ones is performed in an open-loop fashion. While we derive the basic relationships among the Field of View and attainable correction with a pre-defined choice for the hardware, we discuss sky coverage and wavefront sensing issues employing natural and artificial references, involving the latest stateof-the-art in the development of wavefront sensing. We show that a flexible approach allow for a compensated Field of View that is variable and can be properly tuned matching the current turbulence situation and the requirement in term of quality of the compensation. A preliminary description of the overall optomechanical package is given as well along with a rough estimates of the efforts required to translates such a concept into reality.
