Integrated squeezed light sources for two-mode entanglement in thin-film lithium niobate

Scalable generation of nonclassical light sources on an integrated platform is a key requirement for photonic quantum information processing. In particular, realizing multiple indistinguishable squeezed light sources on a single chip is an essential step toward continuous-variable quantum computing. Here, we demonstrate the fabrication of two indistinguishable and independently controllable optical parametric oscillators on a thin-film lithium niobate (TFLN) platform. The device design focuses on reproducibility, independent tunability, and compatibility with larger telecom-wavelength continuous-variable photonic circuits. We observe up to 0.5 dB of directly measured squeezing below the shot-noise level from each source. By interfering the two modes on a beam splitter, we generate an EPR-type two-mode squeezed state and verify continuous-variable entanglement through violation of the Duan-Simon inseparability criterion. This is the first demonstration of two independently tunable squeezed-light sources on a single TFLN chip and their use for generating continuous-variable entanglement.

Demonstration of a Squeezed Light Source on Thin-Film Lithium Niobate with Modal Phase Matching

Squeezed states are essential for continuous variable (CV) quantum information processing, with wide-ranging applications in computing, sensing and communications. Integrated photonic circuits provide a scalable, convenient platform for building large CV circuits. Thin-film Lithium Niobate (TFLN) is particularly promising due to its low propagation loss, efficient parametric down conversion, and fast electro-optical modulation. In this work, we demonstrate a squeezed light source on an integrated TFLN platform, achieving a measured shot noise reduction of 0.46 dB using modal phase matching and grating couplers with an efficiency of up to -2.2 dB. The achieved squeezing is comparable to what has been observed using more complex circuitry based on periodic poling. The simpler design allows for compact, efficient and reproducible sources of squeezed light.

Visible nonlinear photonics via high-order-mode dispersion engineering

Over the past decade, remarkable advances have been realized in chip-based nonlinear photonic devices for classical and quantum applications in the near- and mid-infrared regimes. However, few demonstrations have been realized in the visible and near-visible regimes, primarily due to the large normal material group-velocity dispersion (GVD) that makes it challenging to phase match third-order parametric processes. In this paper, we show that exploiting dispersion engineering of higher-order waveguide modes provides waveguide dispersion that allows for small or anomalous GVD in the visible and near-visible regimes and phase matching of four-wave mixing processes. We illustrate the power of this concept by demonstrating in silicon nitride microresonators a near-visible modelocked Kerr frequency comb and a narrow-band photon-pair source compatible with Rb transitions. These realizations extend applications of nonlinear photonics towards the visible and near-visible regimes for applications in time and frequency metrology, spectral calibration, quantum information, and biomedical applications.
