The weakly interacting tenfold way

The tenfold way is a classification scheme for the building blocks of free fermion systems. More precisely, it classifies the isomorphism classes of spaces of equivariant free Hamiltonians in irreducible fermion systems with symmetries. This classification scheme naturally leads to the K-theoretical classification of topological phases of matter, known as the periodic table of topological insulators and superconductors. Topological K-theory is represented by spectra $KU$ and $KO$, and in this article we present realizations of these spectra in terms of time evolution operators of irreducible free fermion systems with symmetries, with explicit formulas for the structural suspension maps. We introduce a geometric definition of the space of weakly interacting time evolution operators, as the complement of the cut locus of the subspace of free operators. Our main result is that spectra $KU^{wi}$ and $KO^{wi}$ of weakly interacting time evolution operators deformation retract to $KU$ and $KO$. We thus have a stable homotopy theoretical proof that the tenfold way is stable to weak interactions.

Non-formality of Voronov's Swiss-Cheese operads

The Swiss-Cheese operads, which encode actions of algebras over the little $n$-cubes operad on algebras over the little $(n-1)$-cubes operad, comes in several variants. We prove that the variant in which open operations must have at least one open input is not formal in characteristic zero. This is slightly stronger than earlier results of Livernet and Willwacher. The obstruction to formality that we find lies in arity $(2, 2^n)$, rather than $(2, 0)$ (Livernet) or $(4, 0)$ (Willwacher).

Recognition of commutative algebra spectra through an idempotent quasiadjunction

In this article a recognition principle for $\infty$-loop pairs of spaces of connective commutative algebra spectra over connective commutative ring spectra is proved. This is done by generalizing the classical recognition principle for connective commutative ring spectra using relative operads. The machinery of idempotent quasiadjunctions is used to handle the model theoretical aspects of the proof.

Relative Recognition Principle

In this paper the relative recognition principle will be proved. It states that a pair of spaces $(X_o,X_c)$ is weakly equivalent to $(Ω^N_\text{rel}(ι:B\hookrightarrow Y),Ω^N(Y))$ if and only if $(X_o,X_c)$ are grouplike $\overline{\mathcal{SC}^N}$-spaces, where $\overline{\mathcal{SC}^N}$ is any cofibrant resolution of the Swiss-cheese 2-operad $\mathcal{SC}^N$. This principle will be proved for connected $\overline{\mathcal{SC}^N}$-spaces, and also for grouplike $\overline{\mathcal{SC}^N}$-spaces for $2<N\leq\infty$, in the form of an equivalence of homotopy categories.
