Maximal singular curves over finite fields from elliptic and hyperelliptic curves

We construct explicit families of maximal singular curves over finite fields. A maximal singular curve is a curve that attains the Aubry-Perret bound, which is the natural extension of the Hasse-Weil-Serre bound on the maximum number of rational points on a smooth curve over a finite field. Starting from a smooth elliptic or hyperelliptic curve $\tilde{C}$ over $\mathbb{F}_{q}$ ($q$ odd), we generate singular curves $C$ with non-split nodes or cusps. In our approach we use linear projections of geometric embeddings, and we apply Stöhr's embedding of hyperelliptic Gorenstein curves and the Rosa-Stöhr theory of trigonal Gorenstein curves. The construction is applied to the Tafazolian and Tafazolian-Torres smooth maximal curves. Finally, we also determine the gonality of all obtained curves.

On Enriques-Babbage Theorem for singular curves

We propose a version of the Enriques-Babagge Theorem for a singular curve $C$, involving its canonical model $C'$. We provide a partial proof for an arbitrary curve $C$ and complete the proof for unicuspidal monomial curves by describing the generators of the ideal of $C'\subset\mathbb{P}^{g-1}$.

Stability conditions for coherent systems on Integral Curves

We present stability conditions for the category of coherent systems on an integral curve. We define a three-parameter family of pre-stability conditions in its derived category using tilting, and we then investigate when these conditions qualify as true stability conditions. Additionally, we examine the semistability of specific objects under these conditions, namely: torsion, free, and complete tilted systems, without relying on the support property.

On Clifford dimension for singular curves

We study the Clifford dimension of an integral curve. To do so, we extend the notion of Clifford index, allowing torsion-free sheaves on its computation. We derive results for arbitrary curves, and then focus on the monomial case. In this context, we obtain combinatorial formulae for the Clifford index and apply them to the case of Clifford dimension $2$.

Certified Severi dimensions for hyperelliptic and supersymmetric cusps

In a previous paper, the first three authors formulated a precise conjecture about the dimension of the {\it generalized Severi variety} $M^n_{d,g; {\rm S}, {\bf k}}$ of degree-$d$ holomorphic maps $\mathbb{P}^1 \rightarrow \mathbb{P}^n$ whose images' singularities are singleton cusps with value semigroups ${\rm S}$ and ramification profiles ${\bf k}$. In this paper, we prove that an adjusted form of the conjecture holds for generic profiles ${\bf k}$ associated with two distinguished (infinite) classes of semigroups ${\rm S}$.

On Gonality and Canonical Models of Unicuspidal Rational Curves

We study the gonality and canonical model of a rational unicuspidal curve C. We are mainly interested in the case where C is non-Gorenstein. We classify such curves via different notions of gonality, and by its canonical model C', up to genus 6. We do it by means of more general families of curves of arbitrary genus. Afterwards, we get a general formula for the dimension of the space of hypersurfaces of a fixed degree containing C', which we apply to some particular cases.

Towards Brill--Noether theory for cuspidal curves

Understanding when an abstract complex curve of given genus comes equipped with a map of fixed degree to a projective space of fixed dimension is a foundational question; and Brill--Noether theory addresses this question via linear series, which algebraically codify maps to projective targets. Classical Brill--Noether theory, which focuses on smooth curves, has been intensively explored; but much less is known for singular curves, particularly for those with non-nodal singularities. In a one-parameter family of smooth curves specializing to a singular curve $C_0$, one expects certain aspects of the global geometry of the smooth fibers to ``specialize" to the local geometry of the singularities of $C_0$. Making this expectation quantitatively precise involves analyzing the arithmetic and combinatorics of semigroups ${\rm S}$ attached to discrete valuations defined on (the local rings of) these singularities. In this largely-expository note we focus primarily on Brill--Noether-type results for curves with {\it cusps}, i.e., unibranch singularities; in this setting, the associated semigroups are {\it numerical} semigroups with finite complement in $\mathbb{N}$.

Max Noether Theorem for Singular Curves

Max Noether's Theorem asserts that if $ω$ is the dualizing sheaf of a nonsingular nonhyperelliptic projective curve, then the natural morphisms $\text{Sym}^nH^0(ω)\to H^0(ω^n)$ are surjective for all $n\geq 1$. The result was extended for Gorenstein curves by many different authors in distinct ways. More recently, it was proved for curves with projectively normal canonical models, and curves whose non-Gorenstein points are bibranch at worse. Based on those works, we address the combinatorics of the general case and extend the result for any integral curve.

Severi dimensions for unicuspidal curves

We study parameter spaces of linear series on projective curves in the presence of unibranch singularities, i.e. {\it cusps}; and to do so, we stratify cusps according to value semigroup. We show that {\it generalized Severi varieties} of maps $\mathbb{P}^1 \rightarrow \mathbb{P}^n$ with images of fixed degree and arithmetic genus are often {\it reducible} whenever $n \geq 3$. We also prove that the Severi variety of degree-$d$ maps with a hyperelliptic cusp of delta-invariant $g \ll d$ is of codimension at least $(n-1)g$ inside the space of degree-$d$ holomorphic maps $\mathbb{P}^1 \rightarrow \mathbb{P}^n$; and that for small $g$, the bound is exact, and the corresponding space of maps is the disjoint union of unirational strata. Finally, we conjecture a generalization for unicuspidal rational curves associated to an {\it arbitrary} value semigroup.

Polynomial ring representations of endomorphisms of exterior powers

A polynomial ring with rational coefficients is an irreducible representation of Lie algebras of endomorphisms of exterior powers of a infinite countable dimensional $\mathbb{Q}$-vector space. We give an explicit description of it, using suitable vertex operators on exterior algebras, which mimick those occurring in the bosonic vertex representation of the Lie algebra $gl_\infty$, due to Date--Jimbo--Kashiwara and Miwa (DJKM).

Computing singularities of the spectra of representation rings of finite groups

Let $G$ be a finite group of order $n$, and $ξ$ an $n$-th primitive root of unity. Consider the affine scheme $C:=\mbox{Spc}({\mathbb Z}[ξ]\otimes_{\mathbb Z} R(G))$ where $R(G)$ is the representation ring of $G$. We study the fibers of the formal tangent sheaf of $C$ by computing their dimension and also finding (and measuring) the singularities of $C$. We present explicit computations for noncommutative groups of small order, and develop practical methods to compute these invariants for an arbitrary finite group.

Dimension counts for singular rational curves via semigroups

We study singular rational curves in projective space, deducing conditions on their parametrizations from the value semigroups $\sss$ of their singularities. In particular, we prove that a natural heuristic for the codimension of the space of nondegenerate rational curves of arithmetic genus $g>0$ and degree $d$ in $\mb{P}^n$, viewed as a subspace of all degree-$d$ rational curves in $\mb{P}^n$, holds whenever $g$ is small. On the other hand, we show that this heuristic fails in general, by exhibiting an infinite family of examples of Severi-type varieties of rational curves containing "excess" components of dimension strictly larger than the space of $g$-nodal rational curves.

$K$-weight bounds for $γ$-hyperelliptic semigroups

In this note, we show that {\it $γ$-hyperelliptic} numerical semigroups of genus $g \gg γ$ satisfy a refinement of a well-known characteristic weight inequality due to Torres. The refinement arises from substituting the usual notion of weight by an alternative version, the $K$-weight, which we previously introduced in the course of our study of unibranch curve singularities.

On Gonality, Scrolls, and Canonical Models of Non-Gorenstein Curves

Let $C$ be an integral and projective curve; and let $C'$ be its canonical model. We study the relation between the gonality of $C$ and the dimension of a rational normal scroll $S$ where $C'$ can lie on. We are mainly interested in the case where $C$ is singular, or even non-Gorenstein, in which case $C'\not\cong C$. We first analyze some properties of an inclusion $C'\subset S$ when it is induced by a pencil on $C$. Afterwards, in an opposite direction, we assume $C'$ lies on a certain scroll, and check some properties $C$ may satisfy, such as gonality and the kind of its singularities. At the end, we prove that a rational monomial curve $C$ has gonality $d$ if and only if $C'$ lies on a $(d-1)$-fold scroll.

Singular rational curves with points of nearly-maximal weight

In this article we study rational curves with a unique unibranch genus-$g$ singularity, which is of {\it $\ka$-hyperelliptic} type in the sense of \cite{To}; we focus on the cases $\ka=0$ and $\ka=1$, in which the semigroup associated to the singularity is of (sub)maximal weight. We obtain a partial classification of these curves according to the linear series they support, the scrolls on which they lie, and their gonality.

Curves with Canonical Models on Scrolls

Let $C$ be an integral and projective curve whose canonical model $C'$ lies on a rational normal scroll $S$ of dimension $n$. We mainly study some properties on $C$, such as gonality and the kind of singularities, in the case where $n=2$ and $C$ is non-Gorenstein, and in the case where $n=3$, the scroll $S$ is smooth, and $C'$ is a local complete intersection inside $S$. We also prove that a rational monomial curve with just one singular point lies on a surface scroll if and only if its gonality is at most $3$, and that it lies on a threefold scroll if and only if its gonality is at most $4$.

On the Singular Scheme of Split Foliations

We prove that the tangent sheaf of a codimension one locally free distribution splits as a sum of line bundles if and only if its singular scheme is arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay. In addition, we show that a foliation by curves is given by an intersection of generically transversal holomorphic distributions of codimension one if and only if its singular scheme is arithmetically Buchsbaum. Finally, we establish that these foliations are determined by their singular schemes, and deduce that the Hilbert scheme of certain arithmetically Buchsbaum schemes of codimension $2$ is birational to a Grassmannian.

Max Noether's Theorem for Integral Curves

We generalize, for integral curves, a celebrated result of Max Noether on global sections of the n-dualizing sheaf of a smooth nonhyperelliptic curve. This is our main result. We also obtain an embedding of a non-Gorenstein curve in a way that we can express the dimensions of the components of the ideal in terms of the main invariants of the curve. Afterwards we focus on gonality, Clifford index and Koszul cohomology of non-Gorenstein curves by allowing torsion free sheaves of rank 1 in their definitions. We find an upper bound for the gonality, which agrees with Brill-Noether's one for a rational and unibranch curve. We characterize curves of genus 5 with Clifford index 1, and, finally, we study Green's Conjecture for a certain class of curves, called nearly Gorenstein.
