Gevrey regularity of mild solutions to the non-cutoff Boltzmann equation

In the paper, for the Cauchy problem on the non-cutoff Boltzmann equation in torus, we establish the global-in-time Gevrey smoothness in velocity and space variables for a class of low-regularity mild solutions near Maxwellians with the Gevrey index depending only on the angular singularity. This together with [24] provides a self-contained well-posedness theory for both existence and regularity of global solutions for initial data of low regularity in the framework of perturbations. For the proof we treat in a subtle way the commutator between the regularization operators and the Boltzmann collision operator involving rough coefficients, and this enables us to combine the classical Hörmander's hypoelliptic techniques together with the global symbolic calculus established for the linearized Boltzmann operator so as to improve the regularity of solutions at positive time.

Asymptotics toward viscous contact waves for solutions of the Landau equation

In the paper, we are concerned with the large time asymptotics toward the viscous contact waves for solutions of the Landau equation with physically realistic Coulomb interactions. Precisely, for the corresponding Cauchy problem in the spatially one-dimensional setting, we construct the unique global-in-time solution near a local Maxwellian whose fluid quantities are the viscous contact waves in the sense of hydrodynamics and also prove that the solution tends toward such local Maxwellian in large time. The result is proved by elaborate energy estimates and seems the first one on the dynamical stability of contact waves for the Landau equation. One key point of the proof is to introduce a new time-velocity weight function that includes an exponential factor of the form $\exp (q(t)\langle ξ\rangle^2)$ with $$ q(t):=q_1-q_2\int_0^tq_3(s)\,ds, $$ where $q_1$ and $q_2$ are given positive constants and $q_3(\cdot)$ is defined by the energy dissipation rate of the solution itself. The time derivative of such weight function is able to induce an extra quartic dissipation term for treating the large-velocity growth in the nonlinear estimates due to degeneration of the linearized Landau operator in the Coulomb case. Note that in our problem the explicit time-decay of solutions around contact waves is unavailable but no longer needed under the crucial use of the above weight function, which is different from the situation in [11, 14].

Small Knudsen rate of convergence to rarefaction wave for the Landau equation

In this paper, we are concerned with the hydrodynamic limit to rarefaction waves of the compressible Euler system for the Landau equation with Coulomb potentials as the Knudsen number $ε>0$ is vanishing. Precisely, whenever $ε>0$ is small, for the Cauchy problem on the Landau equation with suitable initial data involving a scaling parameter $a\in [\frac{2}{3},1]$, we construct the unique global-in-time uniform-in-$ε$ solution around a local Maxwellian whose fluid quantities are the rarefaction wave of the corresponding Euler system. In the meantime, we establish the convergence of solutions to the Riemann rarefaction wave uniformly away from $t=0$ at a rate $ε^{\frac{3}{5}-\frac{2}{5}a}|\ln ε|$ as $ε\to 0$. The proof is based on the refined energy approach combining [19] and [32] under the scaling transformation $(t,x)\to (ε^{-a}t,ε^{-a}x)$.

A half-space problem on the full Euler-Poisson system

This paper is concerned with the initial-boundary value problem on the full Euler-Poisson system for ions over a half line. We establish the existence of stationary solutions under the Bohm criterion similar to the isentropic case and further obtain the large time asymptotic stability of small-amplitude stationary solutions provided that the initial perturbation is sufficiently small in some weighted Sobolev spaces. Moreover, the convergence rate of the solution toward the stationary solution is obtained. The proof is based on the energy method. A key point is to capture the positivity of the temporal energy dissipation functional and boundary terms with suitable space weight functions either algebraic or exponential depending on whether or not the incoming far-field velocity is critical.

The Boltzmann equation with large-amplitude initial data and specular reflection boundary condition

For the Boltzmann equation with cutoff hard potentials, we construct the unique global solution converging with an exponential rate in large time to global Maxwellians not only for the specular reflection boundary condition with the bounded convex C^3 domain but also for a class of large amplitude initial data where the L^infty norm with a suitable velocity weight can be arbitrarily large but the relative entropy need to be small. A key point in the proof is to introduce a delicate nonlinear iterative process of estimating the gain term basing on the triple Duhamel iteration along the linearized dynamics.

Compressible Navier-Stokes approximation for the Boltzmann equation in bounded domains

It is well known that the full compressible Navier-Stokes equations can be deduced via the Chapman-Enskog expansion from the Boltzmann equation as the first-order correction to the Euler equations with viscosity and heat-conductivity coefficients of order of the Knudsen number $ε>0$. In the paper, we carry out the rigorous mathematical analysis of the compressible Navier-Stokes approximation for the Boltzmann equation regarding the initial-boundary value problems in general bounded domains. The main goal is to measure the uniform-in-time deviation of the Boltzmann solution with diffusive reflection boundary condition from a local Maxwellian with its fluid quantities given by the solutions to the corresponding compressible Navier-Stokes equations with consistent non-slip boundary conditions whenever $ε>0$ is small enough. Specifically, it is shown that for well chosen initial data around constant equilibrium states, the deviation weighted by a velocity function is $O(ε^{1/2})$ in $L^\infty_{x,v}$ and $O(ε^{3/2})$ in $L^2_{x,v}$ globally in time. The proof is based on the uniform estimates for the remainder in different functional spaces without any spatial regularity. One key step is to obtain the global-in-time existence as well as uniform-in-$ε$ estimates for regular solutions to the full compressible Navier-Stokes equations in bounded domains when the parameter $ε>0$ is involved in the analysis.

The Boltzmann equation for uniform shear flow

The uniform shear flow for the rarefied gas is governed by the time-dependent spatially homogeneous Boltzmann equation with a linear shear force. The main feature of such flow is that the temperature may increase in time due to the shearing motion that induces viscous heat and the system becomes far from equilibrium. For Maxwell molecules, we establish the unique existence, regularity, shear-rate-dependent structure and non-negativity of self-similar profiles for any small shear rate. The non-negativity is justified through the large time asymptotic stability even in spatially inhomogeneous perturbation framework, and the exponential rates of convergence are also obtained with the size proportional to the second order shear rate. The analysis supports the numerical result that the self-similar profile admits an algebraic high-velocity tail that is the key difficulty to overcome in the proof.

Global mild solutions of the Landau and non-cutoff Boltzmann equations

This paper proves the existence of small-amplitude global-in-time unique mild solutions to both the Landau equation including the Coulomb potential and the Boltzmann equation without angular cutoff. Since the well-known works (Guo, 2002) and (Gressman-Strain-2011, AMUXY-2012) on the construction of classical solutions in smooth Sobolev spaces which in particular are regular in the spatial variables, it still remains an open problem to obtain global solutions in an $L^\infty_{x,v}$ framework, similar to that in (Guo-2010), for the Boltzmann equation with cutoff in general bounded domains. One main difficulty arises from the interaction between the transport operator and the velocity-diffusion-type collision operator in the non-cutoff Boltzmann and Landau equations; another major difficulty is the potential formation of singularities for solutions to the boundary value problem. In the present work we introduce a new function space with low regularity in the spatial variable to treat the problem in cases when the spatial domain is either a torus, or a finite channel with boundary. For the latter case, either the inflow boundary condition or the specular reflection boundary condition is considered. An important property of the function space is that the $L^\infty_T L^2_v$ norm, in velocity and time, of the distribution function is in the Wiener algebra $A(Ω)$ in the spatial variables. Besides the construction of global solutions in these function spaces, we additionally study the large-time behavior of solutions for both hard and soft potentials, and we further justify the property of propagation of regularity of solutions in the spatial variables.

The Boltzmann Equation with Large-amplitude Initial Data in Bounded Domains

The paper is devoted to constructing the global solutions around global Maxwellians to the initial-boundary value problem on the Boltzmann equation in general bounded domains with isothermal diffuse reflection boundaries. We allow a class of non-negative initial data which have arbitrary large amplitude and even contain vacuum. The result shows that the oscillation of solutions away from global Maxwellians becomes small after some positive time provided that they are initially close to each other in $L^2$. This yields the disappearance of any initial vacuum and the exponential convergence of large-amplitude solutions to equilibrium in large time. The isothermal diffuse reflection boundary condition plays a vital role in the analysis. The most key ingredients in our strategy of the proof include: (i) $L^2_{x,v}$--$L^\infty_xL^1_v$--$L^\infty_{x,v}$ estimates along a bootstrap argument; (ii) Pointwise estimates on the upper bound of the gain term by the product of $L^\infty$ norm and $L^2$ norm; (iii) An iterative procedure on the nonlinear term.

The Boltzmann equation with time-periodic boundary temperature

This paper is concerned with the boundary-value problem on the Boltzmann equation in bounded domains with diffuse-reflection boundary where the boundary temperature is time-periodic. We establish the existence of time-periodic solutions with the same period for both hard and soft potentials, provided that the time-periodic boundary temperature is sufficiently close to a stationary one which has small variations around a positive constant. The dynamical stability of time-periodic profiles is also proved under small perturbations, and this in turn yields the non-negativity of the profile. For the proof, we develop new estimates in the time-periodic setting.

Effects of soft interaction and non-isothermal boundary upon long-time dynamics of rarefied gas

In the paper, assuming that the motion of rarefied gases in a bounded domain is governed by the angular cutoff Boltzmann equation with diffuse reflection boundary, we study the effects of both soft intermolecular interaction and non-isothermal wall temperature upon the long-time dynamics of solutions to the corresponding initial boundary value problem. Specifically, we are devoted to proving the existence and dynamical stability of stationary solutions whenever the boundary temperature has suitably small variations around a positive constant. For the proof of existence, we introduce a new mild formulation of solutions to the steady boundary-value problem along the speeded backward bicharacteristic, and develop the uniform estimates on approximate solutions in both $L^2$ and $L^\infty$. Such mild formulation proves to be useful for treating the steady problem with soft potentials even over unbounded domains. In showing the dynamical stability, a new point is that we can obtain the sub-exponential time-decay rate in $L^\infty$ without losing any velocity weight, which is actually quite different from the classical results as in [11,43] for the torus domain and essentially due to the diffuse reflection boundary and the boundedness of the domain.

Ion-acoustic shock in a collisional plasma

The paper is concerned with the propagation of ion-acoustic shock waves in a collision dominated plasma. We firstly establish the existence and uniqueness of a small-amplitude smooth travelling wave, then justify its approximation to the shock profile of the KdV-Burgers equations in a suitable asymptotic regime where dissipation in terms of viscosity coefficient is much stronger than dispersion by the Debye length, and prove in the end the large time asymptotic stability of travelling waves under suitably small smooth perturbations.

Solution to the Boltzmann equation in velocity-weighted Chemin-Lerner type spaces

In this paper we study the Boltzmann equation near global Maxwellians in the $d$-dimensional whole space. A unique global-in-time mild solution to the Cauchy problem of the equation is established in a Chemin-Lerner type space with respect to the phase variable $(x,v)$. Both hard and soft potentials with angular cutoff are considered. The new function space for global well-posedness is introduced to essentially treat the case of soft potentials, and the key point is that the velocity variable is taken in the weighted supremum norm, and the space variable is in the $s$-order Besov space with $s\geq d/2$ including the spatially critical regularity. The proof is based on the time-decay properties of solutions to the linearized equation together with the bootstrap argument. Particularly, the linear analysis in case of hard potentials is due to the semigroup theory, where the extra time-decay plays a role in coping with initial data in $L^2$ with respect to space variable. In case of soft potentials, for the time-decay of linear equations we borrow the results basing on the pure energy method and further extend them to those in $L^\infty$ framework through the technique of $L^2$--$L^\infty$ interplay. In contrast to hard potentials, $L^1$ integrability in $x$ of initial data is necessary for soft potentials in order to obtain global solutions to the nonlinear Cauchy problem.

Global Existence for the Ellipsoidal BGK Model with Initial Large Oscillations

The ellipsoidal BGK model was introduced in \cite{Ho} to fit the correct Prandtl number in the Navier-Stokes approximation of the classical BGK model. In the paper we establish the global existence of mild solutions to the Cauchy problem on the model for a class of initial data allowed to have large oscillations. The proof is motivated by a recent study of the same topic on the Boltzmann equation in \cite{DHWY}.

Global well-posedness of the Boltzmann equation with large amplitude initial data

The global well-posedness of the Boltzmann equation with initial data of large amplitude has remained a long-standing open problem. In this paper, by developing a new $L^\infty_xL^1_{v}\cap L^\infty_{x,v}$ approach, we prove the global existence and uniqueness of mild solutions to the Boltzmann equation in the whole space or torus for a class of initial data with bounded velocity-weighted $L^\infty$ norm under some smallness condition on $L^1_xL^\infty_v$ norm as well as defect mass, energy and entropy so that the initial data allow large amplitude oscillations. Both the hard and soft potentials with angular cut-off are considered, and the large time behavior of solutions in $L^\infty_{x,v}$ norm with explicit rates of convergence is also studied.

The Vlasov-Poisson-Boltzmann system for a disparate mass binary mixture

The Vlasov-Poisson-Boltzmann system is often used to govern the motion of plasmas consisting of electrons and ions with disparate masses when collisions of charged particles are described by the two-component Boltzmann collision operator. The perturbation theory of the system around global Maxwellians recently has been well established in [42]. It should be more interesting to further study the existence and stability of nontrivial large time asymptotic profiles for the system even with slab symmetry in space, particularly understanding the effect of the self-consistent potential on the non-trivial long-term dynamics of the binary system. In the paper, we consider the problem in the setting of rarefaction waves. The analytical tool is based on the macro-micro decomposition introduced in [59] that we can be able to develop into the case for the two-component Boltzmann equations around local bi-Maxwellians. Our focus is to explore how the disparate masses and charges of particles play a role in the analysis of the approach of the complex coupling system time-asymptotically toward a non-constant equilibrium state whose macroscopic quantities satisfy the quasineutral nonisentropic Euler system.

Stability of rarefaction waves of the Navier-Stokes-Poisson system

In the paper we are concerned with the large time behavior of solutions to the one-dimensional Navier-Stokes-Poisson system in the case when the potential function of the self-consistent electric field may take distinct constant states at $x=\pm\infty$. Precisely, it is shown that if initial data are close to a constant state with asymptotic values at far fields chosen such that the Riemann problem on the corresponding quasineutral Euler system admits a rarefaction wave whose strength is not necessarily small, then the solution exists for all time and tends to the rarefaction wave as $t\to+\infty$. The construction of the nontrivial large-time profile of the potential basing on the quasineutral assumption plays a key role in the stability analysis. The proof is based on the energy method by taking into account the effect of the self-consistent electric field on the viscous compressible fluid.

Darcy's law and diffusion for a two-fluid Euler-Maxwell system with dissipation

This paper is concerned with the large-time behavior of solutions to the Cauchy problem on the two-fluid Euler-Maxwell system with collisions when initial data are around a constant equilibrium state. The main goal is the rigorous justification of diffusion phenomena in fluid plasma at the linear level. Precisely, motivated by the classical Darcy's law for the nonconductive fluid, we first give a heuristic derivation of the asymptotic equations of the Euler-Maxwell system in large time. It turns out that both the density and the magnetic field tend time-asymptotically to the diffusion equations with diffusive coefficients explicitly determined by given physical parameters. Then, in terms of the Fourier energy method, we analyze the linear dissipative structure of the system, which implies the almost exponential time-decay property of solutions over the high-frequency domain. The key part of the paper is the spectral analysis of the linearized system, exactly capturing the diffusive feature of solutions over the low-frequency domain. Finally, under some conditions on initial data, we show the convergence of the densities and the magnetic field to the corresponding linear diffusion waves with the rate $(1+t)^{-5/4}$ in $L^2$ norm and also the convergence of the velocities and the electric field to the corresponding asymptotic profiles given in the sense of the geneneralized Darcy's law with the faster rate $(1+t)^{-7/4}$ in $L^2$ norm. Thus, this work can be also regarded as the mathematical proof of the Darcy's law in the context of collisional fluid plasma.
