Chiral Altermagnon in MnTe

Altermagnetism has surfaced as a novel magnetic phase, bridging the properties of ferro- and anti-ferromagnetism. The momentum-dependent spin-splitting observed in these materials reflects their unique symmetry characteristics, which also establish the conditions for chiral magnons to emerge. Here we provide the first direct experimental evidence for a chiral magnon in the altermagnetic candidate MnTe revealed by circular-dichroism resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (CD-RIXS). This mode which we term chiral altermagnon exhibits a distinct momentum dependence of its spin polarization consistent with the proposed altermagnetic $g-$wave symmetry of MnTe. Our polarization-resolved results corroborate the existence of a new class of magnetic excitations, demonstrating how altermagnetic order shapes spin dynamics and paves the way for advances in spintronic and quantum technologies.

Relativistic and nonrelativistic spin splitting above and below the Fermi level in a $g$-wave altermagnet

Nonrelativistic spin splitting (NRSS) challenges conventional wisdom about antiferromagnets by allowing spin-split electronic bands even in collinear orders with zero net magnetization. This sub-class of antiferromagnets, recently dubbed "altermagnets," enforces distinctive spin textures via spin-group symmetries in the crystal. However, direct experimental evidence for such symmetry-driven magnetism remains scarce, and distinguishing it from relativistic spin splitting presents additional challenges. Here, we combine first-principles calculations, symmetry analysis, and two spin-resolved spectroscopies--angle-resolved photoemission (spin-ARPES) and our newly developed spin- and angle-resolved electron reflection spectroscopy (spin-ARRES)--to achieve the first complete momentum-resolved mapping of relativistic (RSS) and nonrelastivistic (NRSS) spin splitting in CoNb$_4$Se$_8$. By probing both the occupied (spin-ARPES) and unoccupied (spin-ARRES) electronic states in a single experiment, we uncover a series of momentum-dependent spin splitting phenomena each of which switch sign under sixfold rotations and persists far above and below the Fermi level. Crucially, distinct nodal planes in momentum space distinguish NRSS from RSS features. Additionally, the observed collapse of NRSS and the persistence of RSS above the N\'eel temperature, distinguishes a genuine magnetic phase transition from inversion symmetry breaking. Our work demonstrates, for the first time, the combined power of spin-ARPES and spin-ARRES in capturing the full spin texture across an extended energy range, positioning CoNb$_4$Se$_8$ as a prototype for exploring spin-group-based phenomena. These findings open new routes for engineering spin-based functionalities ranging from neuromorphic computing to unconventional superconductivity in layered antiferromagnets.

Three-dimensional nature of anomalous Hall conductivity in YMn6Sn6-xGax, x ~ 0.55

The unique connectivity of kagome lattices gives rise to topological properties, such as flat bands and Dirac cones. When combined with ferromagnetism and a chemical potential near the 2D Dirac points, this structure offers the potential to realize the highly sought-after topological Chern magnetotransport. Recently, there was considerable excitement surrounding this possibility in the ferrimagnetic kagome metal TbMn$_\mathbf{6}$Sn$_\mathbf{6}$. However, density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the 2D Chern gap lies well above the Fermi energy, challenging its relevance in the observed anomalous Hall conductivity. Here, we investigate YMn$_\mathbf{6}$Sn$_\mathbf{5.45}$Ga$_\mathbf{0.55}$, a compound with similar crystallographic, magnetic, and electronic properties to TbMn$_\mathbf{6}$Sn$_\mathbf{6}$. Our findings show that the intrinsic anomalous Hall conductivity in this material, while comparable in magnitude to that in TbMn$_\mathbf{6}$Sn$_\mathbf{6}$, is fully three-dimensional, thus providing experimental evidence that Hall conductivity in this class of materials does not originate from 2D Chern gaps. Additionally, we confirm that the newly proposed empirical scaling relation for extrinsic Hall conductivity is universally governed by spin fluctuations.

Magnetism and Fermiology of Kagome Magnet YMn6Sn4Ge2

Kagome lattice magnets are an interesting class of materials as they can host topological properties in their magnetic and electronic structures. YMn6Sn6 is one such compound in which a series of competing magnetic phases is stabilized by an applied magnetic field, and both an enigmatic topological Hall effect and a Dirac crossing close to the Fermi energy have been realized. This material also shows a magnetization-induced Lifshitz transition and evidence of a unique charge spin coupling in one of the magnetic phases, namely the fan-like phase. Tuning the magnetism, and thus the interplay with the electronic states, opens new avenues for precise control of these novel properties. Here, we demonstrate the extreme sensitivity of the magnetic phases in YMn6Sn4Ge2 through the investigation of structural, magnetic, and transport properties. The high sensitivity to small doping provides great potential for engineering the magnetic phases and associated electronic properties in this family of rare-earth kagome magnets.
