A Local Singularity Analysis for the Ricci Flow and its Applications to Ricci Flows with Bounded Scalar Curvature -- Part II

We continue our local singularity analysis for Ricci flow initiated in ArXiv:2006.16227. Building on that framework, we study Type I singular points in general Ricci flows, without assuming any global Type I curvature bound, and prove that the scalar curvature must blow up at a Type I rate at each such point in all dimensions. As a consequence, Ricci flows with bounded scalar curvature cannot develop Type I singular points. This extends earlier results of the first author with Enders and Topping and with Mantegazza that relied on a global Type I assumption. We then adapt the same local perspective to ancient Ricci flows and analyse the curvature behaviour as time goes to negative infinity, showing in particular that every ancient Type I point exhibits scalar curvature behaviour of ancient Type I order.

Geometric Structure of Ends of Ricci Shrinkers

We study blow-up sequences of Ricci shrinkers without global curvature assumptions based at points $q$ at which the scalar curvature satisfies a Type I bound, proving that their $\mathbb{F}$-limits split a line. In the four-dimensional case these limits are smooth Ricci shrinkers and the convergence is in the pointed smooth Cheeger-Gromov sense. As a consequence, limits along the integral curve of $\nabla f$ starting at such a point $q$ split a line. This generalises known results about the geometry of ends of Ricci shrinkers that relied on global curvature bounds. To obtain our results, we extend the $\mathbb{F}$-convergence theory from Bamler and Li-Wang.

Ends of (singular) Ricci shrinkers

We estimate the number of ends of smooth and singular Ricci shrinkers focussing first on general ends and later on asymptotically conical ones. In particular, we obtain a variety of applications to sequences of Ricci shrinkers converging in a weak pointed sense to a possibly singular limit Ricci shrinker, for instance no new conical end can form in the limit.

Mean Curvature Flow and Heegaard Surfaces in Lens Spaces

We prove that the moduli space of mean convex two-spheres embedded in complete, orientable 3-dimensional Riemannian manifolds with nonnegative Ricci curvature is path-connected. This result is sharp in the sense that neither of the conditions of (strict) mean convexity, completeness, and nonnegativity of the Ricci curvature can be dropped or weakened. We also study the number of path components of mean convex Heegaard tori, again in ambient manifolds with nonnegative Ricci curvature. We prove that there are always either one or two path components and this number does not only depend on the homotopy type of the ambient manifold. We give a precise characterisation of the two cases and also discuss what happens if the mean convexity condition is weakened to nonnegative mean curvature.

Bubble-Tree Convergence and Local Diffeomorphism Finiteness for Gradient Ricci Shrinkers

We prove bubble-tree convergence of sequences of gradient Ricci shrinkers with uniformly bounded entropy and uniform local energy bounds, refining the compactness theory of Haslhofer-Mueller. In particular, we show that no energy concentrates in neck regions, a result which implies a local energy identity for the sequence. Direct consequences of these results are an identity for the Euler characteristic and a local diffeomorphism finiteness theorem.

Noncompact self-shrinkers for mean curvature flow with arbitrary genus

In his lecture notes on mean curvature flow, Ilmanen conjectured the existence of noncompact self-shrinkers with arbitrary genus. Here, we employ min-max techniques to give a rigorous existence proof for these surfaces. Conjecturally, the self-shrinkers that we obtain have precisely one (asymptotically conical) end. We confirm this for large genus via a precise analysis of the limiting object of sequences of such self-shrinkers for which the genus tends to infinity. Finally, we provide numerical evidence for a further family of noncompact self-shrinkers with odd genus and two asymptotically conical ends.

Gaussian upper bounds for the heat kernel on evolving manifolds

In this article, we prove a general and rather flexible upper bound for the heat kernel of a weighted heat operator on a closed manifold evolving by an intrinsic geometric flow. The proof is based on logarithmic Sobolev inequalities and ultracontractivity estimates for the weighted operator along the flow, a method which was previously used by Davies in the case of a non-evolving manifold. This result directly implies Gaussian-type upper bounds for the heat kernel under certain bounds on the evolving distance function; in particular we find new proofs of Gaussian heat kernel bounds on manifolds evolving by Ricci flow with bounded curvature or positive Ricci curvature. We also obtain similar heat kernel bounds for a class of other geometric flows.

A Local Singularity Analysis for the Ricci Flow and its Applications to Ricci Flows with Bounded Scalar Curvature

We develop a refined singularity analysis for the Ricci flow by investigating curvature blow-up rates locally. We first introduce general definitions of Type I and Type II singular points and show that these are indeed the only possible types of singular points. In particular, near any singular point the Riemannian curvature tensor has to blow up at least at a Type I rate, generalising a result of Enders, Topping and the first author that relied on a global Type I assumption. We also prove analogous results for the Ricci tensor, as well as a localised version of Sesum's result, namely that the Ricci curvature must blow up near every singular point of a Ricci flow, again at least at a Type I rate. Finally, we show some applications of the theory to Ricci flows with bounded scalar curvature.

Bubbling analysis and geometric convergence results for free boundary minimal surfaces

We investigate the limit behaviour of sequences of free boundary minimal hypersurfaces with bounded index and volume, by presenting a detailed blow-up analysis near the points where curvature concentration occurs. Thereby, we derive a general quantization identity for the total curvature functional, valid in ambient dimension less than eight and applicable to possibly improper limit hypersurfaces. In dimension three, this identity can be combined with the Gauss-Bonnet theorem to provide a constraint relating the topology of the free boundary minimal surfaces in a converging sequence, of their limit, and of the bubbles or half-bubbles that occur as blow-up models. We present various geometric applications of these tools, including a description of the behaviour of index one free boundary minimal surfaces inside a 3-manifold of non-negative scalar curvature and strictly mean convex boundary. In particular, in the case of compact, simply connected, strictly mean convex domains in $\mathbb{R}^3$ unconditional convergence occurs for all topological types except the disk and the annulus, and in those cases the possible degenerations are classified.

Geometric convergence results for closed minimal surfaces via bubbling analysis

We present some geometric applications, of global character, of the bubbling analysis developed by Buzano and Sharp for closed minimal surfaces, obtaining smooth multiplicity one convergence results under upper bounds on the Morse index and suitable lower bounds on either the genus or the area. For instance, we show that given any Riemannian metric of positive scalar curvature on the three-dimensional sphere the class of embedded minimal surfaces of index one and genus $\gamma$ is sequentially compact for any $\gamma\geq 1$. Furthemore, we give a quantitative description of how the genus drops as a sequence of minimal surfaces converges smoothly, with mutiplicity $m\geq 1$, away from finitely many points where curvature concentration may happen. This result exploits a sharp estimate on the multiplicity of convergence in terms of the number of ends of the bubbles that appear in the process.

The higher-dimensional Chern-Gauss-Bonnet formula for singular conformally flat manifolds

In a previous article, we generalised the classical four-dimensional Chern-Gauss-Bonnet formula to a class of manifolds with finitely many conformally flat ends and singular points, in particular obtaining the first such formula in a dimension higher than two which allows the underlying manifold to have isolated conical singularities. In the present article, we extend this result to all even dimensions $n\geq 4$ in the case of a class of conformally flat manifolds.

The moduli space of two-convex embedded tori

In this short article we investigate the topology of the moduli space of two-convex embedded tori $S^{n-1}\times S^1\subset \mathbb{R}^{n+1}$. We prove that for $n \geq 3$ this moduli space is path-connected, and that for $n = 2$ the connected components of the moduli space are in bijective correspondence with the knot classes associated to the embeddings. Our proof uses a variant of mean curvature flow with surgery developed in our earlier article (arXiv:1607.05604) where neck regions are deformed to tiny strings instead of being cut out completely, an approach which preserves the global topology, embeddedness, as well as two-convexity.

Smooth long-time existence of Harmonic Ricci Flow on surfaces

We prove that at a finite singular time for the Harmonic Ricci Flow on a surface of positive genus both the energy density of the map component and the curvature of the domain manifold have to blow up simultaneously. As an immediate consequence, we obtain smooth long-time existence for the Harmonic Ricci Flow with large coupling constant.

The moduli space of two-convex embedded spheres

We prove that the moduli space of 2-convex embedded n-spheres in R^{n+1} is path-connected for every n. Our proof uses mean curvature flow with surgery and can be seen as an extrinsic analog to Marques' influential proof of the path-connectedness of the moduli space of positive scalar curvature metics on three-manifolds.

Qualitative and quantitative estimates for minimal hypersurfaces with bounded index and area

We prove qualitative estimates on the total curvature of closed minimal hypersurfaces in closed Riemannian manifolds in terms of their index and area, restricting to the case where the hypersurface has dimension less than seven. In particular, we prove that if we are given a sequence of closed minimal hypersurfaces of bounded area and index, the total curvature along the sequence is quantised in terms of the total curvature of some limit surface, plus a sum of total curvatures of complete properly embedded minimal hypersurfaces in Euclidean space - all of which are finite. Thus, we obtain qualitative control on the topology of minimal hypersurfaces in terms of index and area as a corollary.

The Chern-Gauss-Bonnet formula for singular non-compact four-dimensional manifolds

We generalise the classical Chern-Gauss-Bonnet formula to a class of 4-dimensional manifolds with finitely many conformally flat ends and singular points. This extends results of Chang-Qing-Yang in the smooth case. Under the assumptions of finite total Q curvature and positive scalar curvature at the ends and at the singularities, we obtain a new Chern-Gauss-Bonnet formula with error terms that can be expressed as isoperimetric deficits. This is the first such formula in a dimension higher than two which allows the underlying manifold to have isolated branch points or conical singularities.
