Collective Photon Assisted Dressing of Atomic Levels by the number $N$ of Correlated Atoms

Enhancement of the sensitivities of optical magnetometers, atomic clocks and atom interferometers and other quantum metrology devices requires introducing new physical processes to improve on their present achievements. Many body collective correlations among the atoms, spins or, in general, quantum systems may prove to be a suitable method. As these correlations introduce interference terms in the intensity of the scattering amplitudes, they may enhance the signal as $N(N-1)$ for N correlated quantum systems. These correlations enhance the signal to noise ratio by a factor of $N^2$ and contribute to better sensitivity in quantum metrology. Moreover atomic correlation may provide quantum noise limit, Heisenberg limit. In the present communication excitation exchange induced by photons in a cavity between two atoms is calculated and clearly exhibits correlation and collective effects. A novel operator is introduced that expresses photon-induced excitation exchange that takes in account energy conservation, $V_{ij}=\hat{a}^\dag\sigma_i\sigma_j^\dag\hat{a}$, $\sigma_i=\left|g\right\rangle_{i}\left\langle e\right|_{i}$ is lowering operator of $i$-th atom, and $\hat{a}^\dag,\hat{a}$ are photon creation and annihilation operators. Here $i$ and $j$ stand for two atoms. This operator describes real or virtual photon assisted dipole-dipole interaction. Moreover, it conserves the total number of excitations in the joint em field and the quantum system. Experimental challenges are suggested.

Optical Magnetometer: Quantum Resonances at pumping repetition rate of 1/n of the Larmor frequency

The response of a SERF atomic magnetometer to a repetitive short-pulsed pump was investigated. Quantum sub-resonances at a repetition rate of $1/n$ of the Larmor frequency of the magnetic field inside the shield are experimentally observed and theoretically explained. This is a type of synchronization phenomenon. Investigations in single alkali atoms cells as well as mixed alkali atoms of K and Rb are presented. In the later, one species is pumped while the probe is on the other specie polarized by spin exchange. The effect of spin destruction, spin exchange and collisions are studied in order to account for the width of the resonances. Quantum calculations of a three levels $\Lambda$ model for this phenomenon exhibit a dip at the resonance frequency in the absorption spectrum for both cases of pulsed and CW pump modes and an evidence for EIT.

Selfish atom selects quantum resonances at fractional atomic frequencies

We show that the atom as a "quantum entity", driven by an external field in the form of pulse sequence at repetition rate equal to the internal quantum frequency divided by an integer n, responds resonantly. It seeks and finds its characteristic frequencies in any possible combination of its frequencies. This is an indication of self expression by the atom at many sub-frequencies of its own transition frequencies. It is a non-intuitive phenomenon since the external repetition rate has no quantum character, yet the atom responds to it if the rate is equal to 1/n its eigen-frequency. We believe that our results will have implications in other quantum related processes, such as resonant enhancement of chemical reactions and biological processes.

Phase sensitive quantum interference on forbidden transition in ladder scheme

A three level ladder system is analyzed and the coherence of initially electric-dipole forbidden transition is calculated. Due to the presence of two laser fields the initially dipole forbidden transition becomes dynamically permitted due to ac Stark effect. It is shown that such transitions exhibit quantum-interference-related phenomena, such as electromagnetically induced transparency, gain without inversion and enhanced refractive index. Gain and dispersion characteristics of such transitions strongly depend upon the relative phase between the driving and the probe fields. Unlike allowed transitions, gain/absorption behavior of ac-Stark allowed transitions exhibit antisymmetric feature on the Rabi sidebands. It is found that absorption/gain spectra possess extremely narrow sub-natural resonances on these ac Stark allowed forbidden transitions. An interesting finding is simultaneous existence of gain and negative dispersion at Autler-Townes transition which may lead to both reduction of the group velocity and amplification of light.

Super/Subradiant Second Harmonic Generation

A scheme for active second harmonics generation is suggested. The system comprises $N$ three-level atoms in ladder configuration, situated into resonant cavity. It is found that the system can lase in either superradiant or subradiant regime, depending on the number of atoms $N$. When N passes some critical value the transition from the super to subradiance occurs in a phase-transition-like manner. Stability study of the steady state supports this conclusion.

Threshold and non-linear behavior of lasers of $Λ$ and V - configurations

Dynamic properties of closed three level laser systems are investigated. Two schemes of pumping - $Λ$ and V - are considered. It is shown that the non-linear behavior of the photon number as a function of pump both near and far above threshold is crucially different for these two configurations. In particular, it is found that in the high pump regime laser can turn off in a phase-transition-like manner in both $Λ$ and V schemes.

Non-linear properties of strongly pumped lasers

Bloch equations for the atomic population and the polarization/coherence and the equation of motion for the photon number in a laser are solved in steady state as a function of the pump rate. Two level atom and two modes of three levels atom are investigated. Close to threshold the usual linear dependence of the intensity on the pump rate in found for all cases. However, far above threshold strongly nonlinear dependence is encountered. In the cases for which the pump connects the lower lasing state to one of the excited states the character of the non-linearity differs crucially from the cases when the pump in not related directly to the lower lasing state. Non-monotonic dependence of laser intensity upon the pump rate is predicted. Detailed discussion of the nonlinear behavior is presented, including saturation and depletion effects.
