Iterative, Small-Signal L2 Stability Analysis of Nonlinear Constrained Systems

This paper provides a method to analyze the small-signal L2 gain of control-affine nonlinear systems on compact sets via iterative semi-definite programs. First, a continuous piecewise affine storage function and the corresponding upper bound on the L2 gain are found on a bounded, compact set's triangulation. Then, to ensure that the state does not escape this set, a barrier function is found that is robust to small-signal inputs. Small-signal L2 stability then holds inside each sublevel set of the barrier function inside the set where the storage function was found. The bound on the inputs is also found while searching for a barrier function. The method's effectiveness is shown in a numerical example.

Improved Small-Signal L2 Gain Analysis for Nonlinear Systems

TheL2-gain characterizes a dynamical system's input-output properties, but can be difficult to determine for nonlinear systems. Previous work designed a nonconvex optimization problem to simultaneously search for a continuous piecewise affine (CPA) storage function and an upper bound on the small-signal L2-gain of a dynamical system over a triangulated region about the origin. This work improves upon those results by establishing a tighter upper-bound on a system's gain using a convex optimization problem. By reformulating the relationship between the Hamilton-Jacobi inequality and L2-gain as a linear matrix inequality and then developing novel LMI error bounds for a triangulation, tighter gain bounds are derived and computed more efficiently. Additionally, a combined quadratic and CPA storage function is considered to expand the nonlinear systems this optimization problem is applicable to. Numerical results demonstrate the tighter upper bound on a dynamical system's gain.

Systematic, Lyapunov-Based, Safe and Stabilizing Controller Synthesis for Constrained Nonlinear Systems

A controller synthesis method for state- and input-constrained nonlinear systems is presented that seeks continuous piecewise affine (CPA) Lyapunov-like functions and controllers simultaneously. Non-convex optimization problems are formulated on triangulated subsets of the admissible states that can be refined to meet primary control objectives, such as stability and safety, alongside secondary performance objectives. A multi-stage design is also given that enlarges the region of attraction (ROA) sequentially while allowing exclusive performance for each stage. A clear boundary for an invariant subset of closed-loop system's ROA is obtained from the resulting Lipschitz Lyapunov function. For control-affine nonlinear systems, the non-convex problem is formulated as a series of conservative, but well-posed, semi-definite programs. These decrease the cost function iteratively until the design objectives are met. Since the resulting CPA Lyapunov-like functions are also Lipschitz control (or barrier) Lyapunov functions, they can be used in online quadratic programming to find minimum-norm control inputs. Numerical examples are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the method.

Systematic Stabilization of Constrained Piecewise Affine Systems

This paper presents an efficient, offline method to simultaneously synthesize controllers and seek closed-loop Lyapunov functions for constrained piecewise affine systems on triangulated subsets of the admissible states. Triangulation refinements explore a rich class of controllers and Lyapunov functions. Since an explicit Lipschitz Lyapunov function is found, an invariant subset of the closed-loop region of attraction is obtained. Moreover, it is a control Lyapunov function, so minimum-norm controllers can be realized through online quadratic programming. It is formulated as a sequence of semi-definite programs. The method avoids computationally burdensome non-convex optimizations and a-priori design choices that are typical of similar existing methods.

Simultaneous Controller and Lyapunov Function Design for Constrained Nonlinear Systems

This paper presents a method to stabilize state and input constrained nonlinear systems using an offline optimization on variable triangulations of the set of admissible states. For control-affine systems, by choosing a continuous piecewise affine (CPA) controller structure, the non-convex optimization is formulated as iterative semi-definite programming (SDP), which can be solved efficiently using available software. The method has very general assumptions on the system's dynamics and constraints. Unlike similar existing methods, it avoids finding terminal invariant sets, solving non-convex optimizations, and does not rely on knowing a control Lyapunov function (CLF), as it finds a CPA Lyapunov function explicitly. The method enforces a desired upper-bound on the decay rate of the state norm and finds the exact region of attraction. Thus, it can be also viewed as a systematic approach for finding Lipschitz CLFs in state and input constrained control-affine systems. Using the CLF, a minimum norm controller is also formulated by quadratic programming for online application.
