Assessment Design in the GenAI Era: The X1-X2-X3 Assessment Pattern for Testing Students' AI Literacy, Learning Outcomes, and Reflection

Generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) has challenged the validity of unsupervised online assessment, especially in technical subjects where plausible answers can be produced with little effort. This paper reports lessons from designing and implementing an AI-aware, AI-testing assessment in a large second-year undergraduate database systems module. The design combined two linked elements: (1) a structured three-part response format (X1-X2-X3) in which students documented a sourced answer, produced their own answer, and evaluated the sourced output; and (2) an AI-aware question-design process in which draft tasks were stress-tested against contemporary GenAI tools and revised when generic prompting produced superficially adequate answers. The account draws on archived assessment materials, rubrics, planning records, design-time GenAI trials, practice-response data, attainment records, and external review comments. Its main contribution is a reusable assessment-design method rather than a claim of measured learning gains. We show how the pattern developed across iterations and how it can support authentic assessment, visible AI literacy, student judgement, and more transparent marking. The paper offers practical guidance for lecturers adapting assessment to routine GenAI use, focusing on testing AI literacy rather than penalising students for misconduct.

Designing for Interconnected Islamic Learning: A Qualitative Study of Muslim Women's Experiences with Qur'an, Hadith, and Seerah Apps

Islamic learning often depends on reading the Qur'an, Hadith, and Seerah together, yet digital tools typically separate these sources across apps, screens, and search pathways. We examine this as a human-computer interaction problem through five semi-structured interviews with Muslim women recruited from an online Islamic learning community. Participants described a recurring tension: they wanted Qur'an-Hadith-Seerah context at the point of reading, but only when contextual expansion remained trustworthy, optional, and did not interrupt reading. Interpreting the interviews through gendered digital religion, epistemic trust, and seamless learning, we identify five themes concerning contextual understanding, authenticity, interface clutter, study modes, and guidance features. We introduce layered contextuality as an HCI account of this domain: contextual expansion must be balanced with interpretive accountability, devotional flow, and continuity across devices and study intensities.

A Comparative Study of Pretrained Transformer Models for Quranic ASR: Speech Representations, Label Formats, and Dataset Composition

Quran Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) aims to convert Quranic recitation into text, enabling applications such as aided memorisation tools and Quranic search engines. However, existing ASR models often exhibit high Word Error Rates (WER) on user-recited verses and lack full coverage of the Quranic corpus. This paper presents a systematic empirical study of domain-specific fine-tuning of pretrained Transformer-based models for Quranic ASR, using advanced speech feature extraction methods: Wav2Vec2.0, HuBERT, and XLS-R. These models apply self-supervised learning by masking portions of input audio and using Transformer architectures to learn context-aware speech features. The pretrained models are fine-tuned on a filtered Quranic dataset exceeding 870 hours of professional and user recitations. Through comprehensive ablation studies across feature extractors, output label formats, training strategies, and clip durations, we identify the key factors that affect transcription accuracy in this domain. Our best-performing configuration achieves a WER of 0.08 on the EveryAyah subset and 0.11 on the combined EveryAyah+Tarteel setting, representing roughly a five-percentage-point gain over the Citrinet baseline (WER = 0.163) while reducing combined-model training time from 140 hours to 40 hours. Arabic text without diacritics yields the best fine-tuning results, and Wav2Vec2-XLSR-53 provides the strongest overall representation. Future work includes improving dataset quality and developing phoneme-aware models to extract deeper speech feature representations for Tajweed-sensitive applications.

Hadith computational science in the age of large language models: a critical narrative review

We examine how hadith computational science is being reshaped by transformer models, retrieval-grounded pipelines, and large language models (LLMs). Recent reviews document growth in the literature, but they do not yet provide a critical account of which advances are methodologically robust, which remain benchmark-bound, and which unresolved problems still limit scholarly use. We address this gap through a critical narrative review that combines critique of existing reviews, paper-level appraisal of representative original studies, and synthesis of Islamic scholar and domain-expert perspectives on authenticity, authority, and responsible use. We find uneven progress. Data resources have expanded, segmentation tasks have matured, narrator and source-verification problems are better formalized, and LLM-assisted workflows now support corpus-scale enrichment, multilingual access, and grounded evaluation. At the same time, progress remains constrained by narrow corpora, weak benchmark comparability, synthetic-to-real transfer gaps, narrator identity resolution, preprocessing fragility, limited reproducibility, and sparse expert-grounded validation. We show that important gaps lie beyond dominant benchmarks: non-canonical and obscure corpora, commentary and explanatory literature, cross-source links with Qur'an and seerah, and fiqh-facing evidence support. We argue that hadith computation should be assessed less as isolated model performance than as an evidence infrastructure problem requiring knowledge integration, provenance, and expert supervision. On this basis, we define a research agenda for making the field methodologically stronger and more useful to Islamic scholarship.
