Analysis of an all-to-all connected star array of transmon qubits

We analyzed quantum $XX$ and $ZZ$ coupling and state transfer in an all-to-all connected star array of capacitively coupled superconducting transmon qubits. It is shown that in a highly-connected system like this a variety of different $ZZ$ couplings arise that correspond to the different ways qubits can interact with each other, opening different channels for unwanted qubit crosstalk and thus qubit operation errors. We studied the dependence of both the $XX$ and the $ZZ$ coupling on qubit detuning that controls qubit-qubit interaction. The $XX$ coupling, quantified by the error state occupation probability, shows a $Δω^{-2}$ decay with qubit detuning $Δω$. On the other hand, all $ZZ$ coupling frequencies show spikes at values in the lower detuning region that correspond to resonances between qubit states and states out of the computational basis, after which all couplings quickly decay to zero as qubit detuning further increases. This allows to define an operational region where near-zero qubit coupling can be achieved. We derive equations for the couplings as a function of qubit detuning that agree with numerical results solving the Schrödinger equation.

Surface states in defect-free polyatomic lattices described by a tight-binding model

We report about a mechanism for surface localization, present in finite defect-free polyatomic lattices described by a tight binding model. Numerical diagonalization and degenerated perturbation theory show that there is a minimum number of atoms within each unit cell in the lattice for which surface states may exist, provided the local energy of the surface atom is different from the rest in the unit cell. It is shown that the appearance of surface states is a second-order effect in the hopping parameter. Other kinds of surface states are identified in the two-dimensional case.

Analysis of a tuneable coupler for superconducting phase qubits

This paper presents a theoretical analysis of the recently realized tuneable coupler for superconducting phase qubits (R. C. Bialczak et al., Ref.\ \protect\onlinecite{Bialczak}). The coupling can be turned off by compensating a negative mutual inductance with a tuneable Josephson inductance. The main coupling in this system is of the $XX$ type and can be zeroed exactly, while there is also a small undesired contribution of the $ZZ$ type. We calculate both couplings as functions of the tuning parameter (bias current) and focus on the residual coupling in the OFF regime. In particular, we show that for typical experimental parameters the coupling OFF/ON ratio is few times $10^{-3}$, and it may be zeroed by proper choice of parameters. The remaining errors due to physical presence of the coupler are on the order of $10^{-6}$.

Quantum discrete breathers

We review recent studies about quantum discrete breathers. We describe their basic properties in comparison with their classical counterparts, and the ways they may be addressed theoretically in different quantum lattice models including either bosonic or fermionic excitations. We also review recent experimental work in the field.

Edge-localized states in quantum one-dimensional lattices

In one-dimensional quantum lattice models with open boundaries, we find and study localization at the lattice edge. We show that edge-localized eigenstates can be found in both bosonic and fermionic systems, specifically, in the Bose-Hubbard model with on-site interactions and in the spinless fermion model with nearest-neighbor interactions. We characterize the localization through spectral studies via numerical diagonalization and perturbation theory, through considerations of the eigenfunctions, and through the study of explicit time evolution. We concentrate on few-particle systems, showing how more complicated edge states appear as the number of particles is increased.

Boundary effects on quantum q-breathers in a Bose-Hubbard chain

We investigate the spectrum and eigenstates of a Bose-Hubbard chain containing two bosons with fixed boundary conditions. In the noninteracting case the eigenstates of the system define a two-dimensional normal-mode space. For the interacting case weight functions of the eigenstates are computed by perturbation theory and numerical diagonalization. We identify paths in the two-dimensional normal-mode space which are rims for the weight functions. The decay along and off the rims is algebraic. Intersection of two paths (rims) leads to a local enhancement of the weight functions. We analyze nonperturbative effects due to the degeneracies and the formation of two-boson bound states.
