ECIR 2020 Workshops: Assessing the Impact of Going Online

ECIR 2020 https://ecir2020.org/ was one of the many conferences affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. The Conference Chairs decided to keep the initially planned dates (April 14-17, 2020) and move to a fully online event. In this report, we describe the experience of organizing the ECIR 2020 Workshops in this scenario from two perspectives: the workshop organizers and the workshop participants. We provide a report on the organizational aspect of these events and the consequences for participants. Covering the scientific dimension of each workshop is outside the scope of this article.

Configuration Spaces of Surfaces

We compute small rational models for configuration spaces of points on oriented surfaces, as right modules over the framed little disks operad. We do this by splitting these surfaces in unions of several handles. We first describe rational models for the configuration spaces of these handles as algebras in the category of right modules over the framed little disks operad. We then express the configuration spaces of the surface as an "iterated Hochschild complex" of these algebras with coefficients in the module given by configurations in a sphere with holes. Physically, our results may be interpreted as saying that the partition function of the Poisson-$σ$-model on closed surfaces has no quantum corrections, i.e., no terms coming from Feynman diagrams of positive loop order.

Joint Event Extraction along Shortest Dependency Paths using Graph Convolutional Networks

Event extraction (EE) is one of the core information extraction tasks, whose purpose is to automatically identify and extract information about incidents and their actors from texts. This may be beneficial to several domains such as knowledge bases, question answering, information retrieval and summarization tasks, to name a few. The problem of extracting event information from texts is longstanding and usually relies on elaborately designed lexical and syntactic features, which, however, take a large amount of human effort and lack generalization. More recently, deep neural network approaches have been adopted as a means to learn underlying features automatically. However, existing networks do not make full use of syntactic features, which play a fundamental role in capturing very long-range dependencies. Also, most approaches extract each argument of an event separately without considering associations between arguments which ultimately leads to low efficiency, especially in sentences with multiple events. To address the two above-referred problems, we propose a novel joint event extraction framework that aims to extract multiple event triggers and arguments simultaneously by introducing shortest dependency path (SDP) in the dependency graph. We do this by eliminating irrelevant words in the sentence, thus capturing long-range dependencies. Also, an attention-based graph convolutional network is proposed, to carry syntactically related information along the shortest paths between argument candidates that captures and aggregates the latent associations between arguments; a problem that has been overlooked by most of the literature. Our results show a substantial improvement over state-of-the-art methods.

Homotopy equivalence of shifted cotangent bundles

Given a bundle of chain complexes, the algebra of functions on its shifted cotangent bundle has a natural structure of a shifted Poisson algebra. We show that if two such bundles are homotopy equivalent, the corresponding Poisson algebras are homotopy equivalent. We apply this result to $L_\infty$-algebroids to show that two homotopy equivalent bundles have the same $L_\infty$-algebroid structures and explore some consequence on the theory of shifted Poisson structures.

Gravity Formality

We show that Willwacher's cyclic formality theorem can be extended to preserve natural Gravity operations on cyclic multivector fields and cyclic multidifferential operators. We express this in terms of a homotopy Gravity quasi-isomorphism with explicit local formulas. For this, we develop operadic tools related to mixed complexes and cyclic homology and prove that the operad $\mathsf M_\circlearrowleft$ of natural operations on cyclic operators is formal and hence quasi-isomorphic to the Gravity operad.

BV Formality

We prove a stronger version of the Kontsevich Formality Theorem for orientable manifolds, relating the Batalin-Vilkovisky (BV) algebra of multivector fields and the homotopy BV algebra of multidifferential operators of the manifold.

Operadic Torsors

We introduce the notion of operadic torsors and operadic quasi-torsors. We show that if an operadic (quasi-)torsor between two operads exists, then these operads are (quasi-)isomorphic. As an application we present the (arguably) shortest known proof of the Deligne conjecture.

The Frobenius properad is Koszul

We show Koszulness of the prop governing involutive Lie bialgebras and also of the props governing non-unital and unital-counital Frobenius algebras, solving a long-standing problem. This gives us minimal models for their deformation complexes, and for deformation complexes of their algebras which are discussed in detail. Using an operad of graph complexes we prove, with the help of an earlier result of one of the authors, that there is a highly non-trivial action of the Grothendieck-Teichmüller group $GRT_1$ on (completed versions of) the minimal models of the properads governing Lie bialgebras and involutive Lie bialgebras by automorphisms. As a corollary one obtains a large class of universal deformations of any (involutive) Lie bialgebra and any Frobenius algebra, parameterized by elements of the Grothendieck-Teichmüller Lie algebra. We also prove that, for any given homotopy involutive Lie bialgebra structure in a vector space, there is an associated homotopy Batalin-Vilkovisky algebra structure on the associated Chevalley-Eilenberg complex.
