$\mathrm{L}^p$-based Sobolev theory on closed manifolds of minimal regularity: Vector-valued problems

This paper is the second part of a two-paper series, initiated in arXiv:2603.02163 for scalar PDEs on hypersurfaces, and is concerned with the well-posedness and $\mathrm{L}^p$-based Sobolev regularity of vector-valued PDEs of interest in fluid dynamics. This family of PDEs includes the (stationary) Bochner Laplace, tangent Stokes and Oseen, and tangent Navier--Stokes equations. We present several strong, weak and ultra-weak formulations of these problems on compact, connected $d$-dimensional manifolds without boundary embedded in $\mathrm{R}^{d+1}$. We prove $\mathrm{W}^{m,p}$-regularity for any $p \in (1,\infty)$ for manifolds of minimal regularity $C^{m+1}$ or $C^{m,1}$ for $m\ge1$. Building upon the $\mathrm{L}^p$-based scalar elliptic theory from arXiv:2603.02163, we develop a parametrization-free and purely variational approach that resorts to classical results such as the Banach--Nečas--Babuška theorem and the generalized Babuška--Brezzi theory in reflexive Banach spaces. In particular, by exploiting the manifold closedness, we decouple the velocity and pressure variables in the tangent Stokes problem to establish their higher-regularity $\mathbf{W}^{m,p} \times \mathrm{W}^{m-1,p}$ ($m \geq 2$) as a consequence of the $\mathrm{L}^p$-based well-posedness and regularity theory for the Laplace--Beltrami and Bochner--Laplace operators. We study spectral and regularity properties of an appropriate Stokes operator, and apply them to show existence of solutions for the Navier--Stokes equations for $p=2$ and $d \leq 4$. We next extend the existence to $p > 2$ and prove higher-order $\mathrm{L}^p$-based regularity. We finally examine alternative choices to the Bochner Laplace operator that are useful in fluid dynamics.

Virtual element methods for a class of fully nonlinear elliptic PDEs

We study virtual element discretizations of a well-known variational formulation in $H^2$ of Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman and Isaacs equations with Cordes coefficients. We show that the use of $H^2$ conforming virtual element spaces leads to a relatively simple analysis, bypassing the need for discrete Miranda-Talenti estimates that typically arises when using nonconforming schemes. We investigate how the polynomial degree of projection operators, especially for lower order terms, affects both the error analysis and robustness of the proposed schemes. We also show the possibility of imposing weakly the Dirichlet boundary condition, which simplifies the implementation of the method in some virtual element codes. Our results are complemented by numerical experiments in which we compare the convergence of different variants of the scheme for some test problems.

Existence of weak solutions of the surface Beris-Edwards model

We prove the existence of weak solutions to the surface Beris-Edwards model for nematic liquid crystals posed on a $d$-dimensional ($d \in \{2,3\}$) closed hypersurface of class $C^{2,1}$. This thermodynamically consistent model, recently introduced by Bouck, Nochetto and Yushutin (2024), couples the incompressible tangent Navier-Stokes equations with a kinematic equation for the Q-tensor field that encodes the orientation of the liquid crystal particles with a general state of orientational order. Extending ideas by Abels, Dolzmann and Liu (2014) and Guillén-González and Rodríguez-Bellido (2015) for the Beris-Edwards model in flat domains, we design a Faedo-Galerkin scheme based upon eigenfunctions of an appropriate tangent Stokes operator and tensor-valued Laplace-Beltrami operator and recover a weak solution via standard compactness arguments.

Ferrofluids: Modeling and Approximation

Starting from Maxwell's and linear momentum balance equations, we derive a ferrofluid model using the generalized Onsager's principle. Guided by a discrete perturbation estimate, we design and analyze families of Galerkin schemes that converge to sufficiently regular solutions and derive error estimates. Finally, we numerically explore the model with our proposed method.

$\mathrm{L}^p$-based Sobolev theory on closed manifolds of minimal regularity: Scalar Elliptic Equations

This paper and its follow-up arXiv:2508.11109 are concerned with the well-posedness and $\mathrm{L}^p$-based Sobolev regularity for appropriate weak formulations of a family of prototypical PDEs posed on manifolds of minimal regularity. In particular, the domains are assumed to be compact, connected $d$-dimensional manifolds without boundary of class $C^k$ and $C^{k-1,1}$ ($k \geq 1$) embedded in $\mathrm{R}^{d+1}$. The focus of this program is on the $\mathrm{L}^p$-based theory that is sharp with respect to the regularity of the source terms and the manifold. In the present paper, we focus our attention on the case of general scalar elliptic problems. We first establish $\mathrm{L}^p$-based well-posedness and higher regularity for the purely diffusive problems with variable coefficients by localizing and rewriting these equations in flat domains to employ the Calderón--Zygmund theory, combined with duality arguments. We then invoke the Fredholm alternative to derive analogous results for general scalar elliptic problems, underscoring the subtle differences that the geometric setting entails compared to the theory in flat domains.

Surface Stokes Without Inf-Sup Condition

For a $d$-dimensional hypersurface of class $C^3$ without boundary, we reformulate the surface Stokes equations as a nonsymmetric indefinite elliptic problem governed by two Laplacians. We then use this elliptic reformulation as a basis for a numerical method based on lifted parametric FEM. Assuming no geometric error for simplicity, we prove its well-posedness, quasi-best approximation in a robust mesh-dependent $H^1$-norm for any polynomial degree, as well as an optimal $L^2$ error estimate for both velocity and pressure. This entails a sufficiently small mesh size that solely depends on the Weingarten map and circumvents the usual discrete inf-sup condition. We present numerical experiments for velocity-pressure pairs with equal and disparate polynomial degrees, demonstrating that the proposed method is both accurate and practical.

Conforming virtual element method for nondivergence form linear elliptic equations with Cordes coefficients

We propose and analyze an $H^2$-conforming Virtual Element Method (VEM) for the simplest linear elliptic PDEs in nondivergence form with Cordes coefficients. The VEM hinges on a hierarchical construction valid for any dimension $d \ge 2$. The analysis relies on the continuous Miranda-Talenti estimate for convex domains $Ω$ and is rather elementary. We prove stability and error estimates in $H^2(Ω)$, including the effect of quadrature, under minimal regularity of the data. Numerical experiments illustrate the interplay of coefficient regularity and convergence rates in $H^2(Ω)$.

Inf-Sup Stability of Parabolic TraceFEM

We develop a parabolic inf-sup theory for a modified TraceFEM semi-discretization in space of the heat equation posed on a stationary surface embedded in $\mathbb{R}^n$. We consider the normal derivative volume stabilization and add an $L^2$-type stabilization to the time derivative. We assume that the representation of and the integration over the surface are exact, however, all our results are independent of how the surface cuts the bulk mesh. For any mesh for which the method is well-defined, we establish necessary and sufficient conditions for inf-sup stability of the proposed TraceFEM in terms of $H^1$-stability of a stabilized $L^2$-projection and of an inverse inequality constant that accounts for the lack of conformity of TraceFEM. Furthermore, we prove that the latter two quantities are bounded uniformly for a sequence of shape-regular and quasi-uniform bulk meshes. We derive several consequences of uniform discrete inf-sup stability, namely uniform well-posedness, discrete maximal parabolic regularity, parabolic quasi-best approximation, convergence to minimal regularity solutions, and optimal order-regularity energy and $L^2 L^2$ error estimates. We show that the additional stabilization of the time derivative restores optimal conditioning of time-discrete TraceFEM typical of fitted discretizations.

Monotone two-scale methods for a class of integrodifferential operators and applications

We develop a monotone, two-scale discretization for a class of integrodifferential operators of order $2s$, $s \in (0,1)$. We apply it to develop numerical schemes, and derive pointwise convergence rates, for linear and obstacle problems governed by such operators. As applications of the monotonicity, we provide error estimates for free boundaries and a convergent numerical scheme for a concave fully nonlinear, nonlocal, problem.

Adaptive Finite Element Methods

This is a survey on the theory of adaptive finite element methods (AFEMs), which are fundamental in modern computational science and engineering but whose mathematical assessment is a formidable challenge. We present a self-contained and up-to-date discussion of AFEMs for linear second order elliptic PDEs and dimension d>1, with emphasis on foundational issues. After a brief review of functional analysis and basic finite element theory, including piecewise polynomial approximation in graded meshes, we present the core material for coercive problems. We start with a novel a posteriori error analysis applicable to rough data, which delivers estimators fully equivalent to the solution error. They are used in the design and study of three AFEMs depending on the structure of data. We prove linear convergence of these algorithms and rate-optimality provided the solution and data belong to suitable approximation classes. We also address the relation between approximation and regularity classes. We finally extend this theory to discontinuous Galerkin methods as prototypes of non-conforming AFEMs and beyond coercive problems to inf-sup stable AFEMs.

Projection-Free Method for the Full Frank-Oseen Model of Liquid Crystals

Liquid crystals are materials that experience an intermediate phase where the material can flow like a liquid, but the molecules maintain an orientation order. The Frank-Oseen model is a continuum model of a liquid crystal. The model represents the liquid crystal orientation as a vector field and posits that the vector field minimizes some elastic energy subject to a pointwise unit length constraint, which is a nonconvex constraint. Previous numerical methods in the literature assumed restrictions on the physical constants or had regularity assumptions that ruled out point defects, which are important physical phenomena to model. We present a finite element discretization of the full Frank-Oseen model and a projection free gradient flow algorithm for the discrete problem in the spirit of Bartels (2016). We prove Gamma-convergence of the discrete to the continuous problem: weak convergence of subsequences of discrete minimizers and convergence of energies. We also prove that the gradient flow algorithm has a desirable energy decrease property. Our analysis only requires that the physical constants are positive, which presents challenges due to the additional nonlinearities from the elastic energy.

Reduced Membrane Model for Liquid Crystal Polymer Networks: Asymptotics and Computation

We examine a reduced membrane model of liquid crystal polymer networks (LCNs) via asymptotics and computation. This model requires solving a minimization problem for a non-convex stretching energy. We show a formal asymptotic derivation of the 2D membrane model from 3D rubber elasticity. We construct approximate solutions with point defects. We design a finite element method with regularization, and propose a nonlinear gradient flow with Newton inner iteration to solve the non-convex discrete minimization problem. We present numerical simulations of practical interests to illustrate the ability of the model and our method to capture rich physical phenomena.

$Γ$-convergent LDG method for large bending deformations of bilayer plates

Bilayer plates are slender structures made of two thin layers of different materials. They react to environmental stimuli and undergo large bending deformations with relatively small actuation. The reduced model is a constrained minimization problem for the second fundamental form, with a given spontaneous curvature that encodes material properties, subject to an isometry constraint. We design a local discontinuous Galerkin (LDG) method which imposes a relaxed discrete isometry constraint and controls deformation gradients at barycenters of elements. We prove $Γ$-convergence of LDG, design a fully practical gradient flow, which gives rise to a linear scheme at every step, and show energy stability and control of the isometry defect. We extend the $Γ$-convergence analysis to piecewise quadratic creases. We also illustrate the performance of the LDG method with several insightful simulations of large deformations, one including a curved crease.

A hydrodynamical model of nematic liquid crystal films with a general state of orientational order

We develop a Q-tensor model of nematic liquid crystals occupying a stationary surface which represents a fluidic material film in space. In addition to the evolution due to Landau--de\,Gennes energy the model includes a tangent viscous incompressible flow along the surface. A thermodynamically consistent coupling of a two-dimensional flow and a three-dimensional Q-tensor dynamics is derived from the generalized Onsager principle following the Beris--Edwards system known in the flat case. The main novelty of the model is that it allows for a flow of an arbitrarily oriented liquid crystal so the Q-tensor is not anchored to the tangent plane of the surface, and also obeys an energy law. Several numerical experiments explore kinematical and dynamical properties of the novel model.

Convergent FEM for a membrane model of liquid crystal polymer networks

We design a finite element method (FEM) for a membrane model of liquid crystal polymer networks (LCNs). This model consists of a minimization problem of a non-convex stretching energy. We discuss properties of this energy functional such as lack of weak lower semicontinuity. We devise a discretization with regularization, propose a novel iterative scheme to solve the non-convex discrete minimization problem, and prove stability of the scheme and convergence of discrete minimizers. We present numerical simulations to illustrate convergence properties of our algorithm and features of the model.

Quasi-linear fractional-order operators in Lipschitz domains

We prove Besov boundary regularity for solutions of the homogeneous Dirichlet problem for fractional-order quasi-linear operators with variable coefficients on Lipschitz domains $Ω$ of $\mathbb{R}^d$. Our estimates are consistent with the boundary behavior of solutions on smooth domains and apply to fractional $p$-Laplacians and operators with finite horizon. The proof exploits the underlying variational structure and uses a new and flexible local translation operator. We further apply these regularity estimates to derive novel error estimates for finite element approximations of fractional $p$-Laplacians and present several simulations that reveal the boundary behavior of solutions.

Local energy estimates for the fractional Laplacian

The integral fractional Laplacian of order $s \in (0,1)$ is a nonlocal operator. It is known that solutions to the Dirichlet problem involving such an operator exhibit an algebraic boundary singularity regardless of the domain regularity. This, in turn, deteriorates the global regularity of solutions and as a result the global convergence rate of the numerical solutions. For finite element discretizations, we derive local error estimates in the $H^s$-seminorm and show optimal convergence rates in the interior of the domain by only assuming meshes to be shape-regular. These estimates quantify the fact that the reduced approximation error is concentrated near the boundary of the domain. We illustrate our theoretical results with several numerical examples.

Constructive approximation on graded meshes for the integral fractional Laplacian

We consider the homogeneous Dirichlet problem for the integral fractional Laplacian $(-Δ)^s$. We prove optimal Sobolev regularity estimates in Lipschitz domains provided the solution is $C^s$ up to the boundary. We present the construction of graded bisection meshes by a greedy algorithm and derive quasi-optimal convergence rates for approximations to the solution of such a problem by continuous piecewise linear functions. The nonlinear Sobolev scale dictates the relation between regularity and approximability.
