Quantum Brownian motion in a temperature gradient

When a classical Brownian particle is subjected to a temperature gradient it can undergo thermophoresis, i.e., the particle gets transported towards the colder regions of the environment, which bears relevant consequences to nonequilibrium self-organization. Here, we investigate how the quantum Brownian motion is affected by a temperature gradient. We employ a recently proposed generalized system-plus-reservoir model, where one assumes a continuum field of thermal baths. As our main result, we obtain the quantum influence functional, within the Feynmann-Vernon path integral approach. To test convergence, we derive an effective Langevin equation for the center of mass of the quantum wavepacket, and show that it coincides with the classical Langevin equation at high temperatures. Both the fully quantum (low temperatures) and the semiclassical (high temperature) limits show signatures of quantum thermophoresis in the quantum Brownian motion, a so far unexplored effect.

Dissipative adaptation in a driven spin-boson model within the path-integral formalism

We investigate the dissipative adaptation hypothesis in a quantum regime using a system-reservoir approach. This hypothesis proposes that self-organization arises from a system's ability to dissipate the work transiently absorbed from an external drive. We analyze the quantum dynamics of a driven open system described by a time-dependent spin-boson Hamiltonian modeling a particle in a metastable double-well potential with controllable asymmetry. We explore how the work provided by the dynamic potential is related to the transition probability between the two ground states of the double well. These studies motivate further investigations of the driven spin-boson model toward an understanding of the system's evolution and its thermodynamic implications.

Reconciling nonlinear dissipation with the bilinear model of two Brownian particles

The Brownian motion of a single particle is a paradigmatic model of the nonequilibrium dynamics of dissipative systems. In the system-plus-reservoir approach, one can derive the particle's equations of motion from the reversible dynamics of the system coupled to a bath of oscillators representing its thermal environment. However, extending the system-plus-reservoir approach to multiple particles in a collective environment is not straightforward, and conflicting models have been proposed to that end. Here, we set out to reconcile some aspects of the nonlinear and the bilinear models of two Brownian particles. We show how the nonlinear dissipation originally derived from exponential system-reservoir couplings can alternatively be obtained from the bilinear Lagrangian, with a modified spectral function that explicitly depends on the distance between the particles. As applications, we discuss how to avoid the anomalous diffusion from the standard nonlinear model, as well as how to phenomenologically model a hydrodynamic interaction between a pair of Brownian particles in a viscous fluid.
