Balanced Viscosity (BV) solutions to infinite-dimensional rate-independent systems

Balanced Viscosity solutions to rate-independent systems arise as limits of regularized rate-independent flows by adding a superlinear vanishing-viscosity dissipation. We address the main issue of proving the existence of such limits for infinite-dimensional systems and of characterizing them by a couple of variational properties that combine a local stability condition and a balanced energy-dissipation identity. A careful description of the jump behavior of the solutions, of their differentiability properties, and of their equivalent representation by time rescaling is also presented. Our techniques rely on a suitable chain-rule inequality for functions of bounded variation in Banach spaces, on refined lower semicontinuity-compactness arguments, and on new BV-estimates that are of independent interest.

A degenerating PDE system for phase transitions and damage

In this paper, we analyze a PDE system arising in the modeling of phase transition and damage phenomena in thermoviscoelastic materials. The resulting evolution equations in the unknowns θ(absolute temperature), u (displacement), and χ(phase/damage parameter) are strongly nonlinearly coupled. Moreover, the momentum equation for u contains χ-dependent elliptic operators, which degenerate at the pure phases (corresponding to the values χ=0 and χ=1), making the whole system degenerate. That is why, we have to resort to a suitable weak solvability notion for the analysis of the problem: it consists of the weak formulations of the heat and momentum equation, and, for the phase/damage parameter χ, of a generalization of the principle of virtual powers, partially mutuated from the theory of rate-independent damage processes. To prove an existence result for this weak formulation, an approximating problem is introduced, where the elliptic degeneracy of the displacement equation is ruled out: in the framework of damage models, this corresponds to allowing for partial damage only. For such an approximate system, global-in-time existence and well-posedness results are established in various cases. Then, the passage to the limit to the degenerate system is performed via suitable variational techniques.

Stability results for doubly nonlinear differential inclusions by variational convergence

We present a stability result for a wide class doubly nonlinear equations, featuring general maximal monotone operators, and (possibly) nonconvex and nonsmooth energy functionals. The limit analysis resides on the reformulation of the differential evolution as a scalar energy-conservation equation with the aid of the so-called Fitzpatrick theory for the representation of monotone operators. In particular, our result applies to the vanishing viscosity approximation of rate-independent systems.

Analysis of a temperature-dependent model for adhesive contact with friction

We propose a model for unilateral contact with adhesion between a viscoelastic body and a rigid support, encompassing thermal and frictional effects. Following the approach by M. Fremond, adhesion is described in terms of a surface damage parameter. The main result of the paper states the existence of global solutions to the associated Cauchy problem. It is proved by passing to the limit in a carefully tailored approximate problem, via variational techniques.

Variational convergence of gradient flows and rate-independent evolutions in metric spaces

We study the asymptotic behaviour of families of gradient flows in a general metric setting, when the metric-dissipation potentials degenerate in the limit to a dissipation with linear growth. We present a general variational definition of BV solutions to metric evolutions, showing the different characterization of the solution in the absolutely continuous regime, on the singular Cantor part, and along the jump transitions. By using tools of metric analysis, BV functions and blow-up by time rescaling, we show that this variational notion is stable with respect to a wide class of perturbations involving energies, distances, and dissipation potentials. As a particular application, we show that BV solutions to rate-independent problems arise naturally as a limit of $p$-gradient flows, $p>1$, when the exponents $p$ converge to 1.

Adhesive contact delaminating at mixed mode, its thermodynamics and analysis

An adhesive unilateral contact between visco-elastic heat-conductive bodies in linear Kelvin-Voigt rheology is scrutinised. The flow-rule for debonding the adhesive is considered rate independent, unidirectional, and non-associative due to dependence on the mixity of modes of delamination, namely of Mode I (opening) and of Mode II (shearing). Such mode-mixity dependence of delamination is a very pronounced (and experimentally confirmed) phenomenon typically considered in engineering models. An anisothermal, thermodynamically consistent model is derived, considering a heat-conductive viscoelastic material and the coupling via thermal expansion and adhesion-depending heat transition through the contact surface. We prove the existence of weak solutions by passing to the limit in a carefully designed semi-implicit time-discretization scheme.

Nonsmooth analysis of doubly nonlinear evolution equations

In this paper we analyze a broad class of abstract doubly nonlinear evolution equations in Banach spaces, driven by nonsmooth and nonconvex energies. We provide some general sufficient conditions, on the dissipation potential and the energy functional, for existence of solutions to the related Cauchy problem. We prove our main existence result by passing to the limit in a time-discretization scheme with variational techniques. Finally, we discuss an application to a material model in finite-strain elasticity.

Thermodynamics and analysis of rate-independent adhesive contact at small strains

We address a model for adhesive unilateral frictionless Signorini-type contact between bodies of heat-conductive viscoelastic material, in the linear Kelvin-Voigt rheology, undergoing thermal expansion. The flow-rule for debonding the adhesion is considered rate-independent and unidirectional, and a thermodynamically consistent model is derived and analysed as far as the existence of a weak solution is concerned.

Global attractors for gradient flows in metric spaces

We develop the long-time analysis for gradient flow equations in metric spaces. In particular, we consider two notions of solutions for metric gradient flows, namely energy and generalized solutions. While the former concept coincides with the notion of curves of maximal slope, we introduce the latter to include limits of time-incremental approximations constructed via the Minimizing Movements approach. For both notions of solutions we prove the existence of the global attractor. Since the evolutionary problems we consider may lack uniqueness, we rely on the theory of generalized semiflows introduced by J.M. Ball. The notions of generalized and energy solutions are quite flexible and can be used to address gradient flows in a variety of contexts, ranging from Banach spaces to Wasserstein spaces of probability measures. We present applications of our abstract results by proving the existence of the global attractor for the energy solutions both of abstract doubly nonlinear evolution equations in reflexive Banach spaces, and of a class of evolution equations in Wasserstein spaces, as well as for the generalized solutions of some phase-change evolutions driven by mean curvature.

BV solutions and viscosity approximations of rate-independent systems

In the nonconvex case solutions of rate-independent systems may develop jumps as a function of time. To model such jumps, we adopt the philosophy that rate independence should be considered as limit of systems with smaller and smaller viscosity. For the finite-dimensional case we study the vanishing-viscosity limit of doubly nonlinear equations given in terms of a differentiable energy functional and a dissipation potential which is a viscous regularization of a given rate-independent dissipation potential. The resulting definition of 'BV solutions' involves, in a nontrivial way, both the rate-independent and the viscous dissipation potential, which play a crucial role in the description of the associated jump trajectories. We shall prove a general convergence result for the time-continuous and for the time-discretized viscous approximations and establish various properties of the limiting BV solutions. In particular, we shall provide a careful description of the jumps and compare the new notion of solutions with the related concepts of energetic and local solutions to rate-independent systems.

Long-time behaviour of a thermomechanical model for adhesive contact

This paper deals with the large-time analysis of a PDE system modelling contact with adhesion, in the case when thermal effects are taken into account. The phenomenon of adhesive contact is described in terms of phase transitions for a surface damage model proposed by M. Fremond. Thermal effects are governed by entropy balance laws. The resulting system is highly nonlinear, mainly due to the presence of internal constraints on the physical variables and the coupling of equations written in a domain and on a contact surface. We prove existence of solutions on the whole time interval $(0,+\infty)$ by a double approximation procedure. Hence, we are able to show that solution trajectories admit cluster points which fulfil the stationary problem associated with the evolutionary system, and that in the large-time limit dissipation vanishes.

Thermal effects in adhesive contact: modelling and analysis

In this paper, we consider a contact problem with adhesion between a viscoelastic body and a rigid support, taking thermal effects into account. The PDE system we deal with is derived within the modelling approach proposed by M. Fremond and, in particular, includes the entropy balance equations, describing the evolution of the temperatures of the body and of the adhesive material. Our main result consists in showing the existence of global in time solutions (to a suitable variational formulation) of the related initial and boundary value problem.

Modeling solutions with jumps for rate-independent systems on metric spaces

Rate-independent systems allow for solutions with jumps that need additional modeling. Here we suggest a formulation that arises as limit of viscous regularization of the solutions in the extended state space. Hence, our parametrized metric solutions of a rate-independent system are absolutely continuous mappings from a parameter interval into the extended state space. Jumps appear as generalized gradient flows during which the time is constant. The closely related notion of BV solutions is developed afterwards. Our approach is based on the abstract theory of generalized gradient flows in metric spaces, and comparison with other notions of solutions is given.

Attractors for gradient flows of non convex functionals and applications

This paper addresses the long-time behavior of gradient flows of non convex functionals in Hilbert spaces. Exploiting the notion of generalized semiflows by J. M. Ball, we provide some sufficient conditions for the existence of a global attractor. The abstract results are applied to various classes of non convex evolution problems. In particular, we discuss the long-time behavior of solutions of quasi-stationary phase field models and prove the existence of a global attractor.
