A mathematical model for the Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen argument

We study a nonrelativistic system made of two quantum particles constrained to move on a line and a spin located at a fixed point of the line. Initially the two particles are in a maximally entangled state and the spin is down. The first particle interacts with the spin while the second particle is free, i.e., it does not interact neither with the first particle nor with the spin. We rigorously prove that there is a correlation between the state of the spin and the state of the second particle. More precisely, we show that, in a suitable scaling limit, if the first particle flips the spin, then the second particle possesses a definite momentum in the direction opposite to the spin.

Trapping by repulsion: the NLS with a delta-prime

We establish the existence and provide explicit expressions for the stationary states of the one-dimensional Schr\"odinger equation with a repulsive delta-prime potential and a focusing nonlinearity of power type. Furthermore, we prove that, if the nonlinearity is subcritical, then ground states exist for any strength of the delta-prime interaction and for every positive value of the mass. This result supplies an example of ground states arising from a repulsive potential, a counterintuitive phenomenon explained by the emergence of an additional dimension in the energy space, induced by the delta-prime interaction. This new dimension contains states of lower energy and is thus responsible for the existence of nonlinear ground states that do not originate from linear eigenfunctions. The explicit form of the ground states is derived by addressing the ancillary problem of minimizing the action functional on the Nehari manifold. We solve such problem in the subcritical, critical, and supercritical regimes.

Schr\"odinger evolution on surfaces in 3D contact sub-Riemannian manifolds

Let $M$ be a 3-dimensional contact sub-Riemannian manifold and $S$ a surface embedded in $M$. Such a surface inherits a field of directions that becomes singular at characteristic points. The integral curves of such field define a characteristic foliation $\mathscr{F}$. In this paper we study the Schr\"odinger evolution of a particle constrained on $\mathscr{F}$. In particular, we relate the self-adjointness of the Schr\"odinger operator with a geometric invariant of the foliation. We then classify a special family of its self-adjoint extensions: those that yield disjoint dynamics.

An explicitly solvable NLS model with discontinuous standing waves

We study the NLS Equation on the line with a point interaction given by the superposition of an attractive delta potential with a dipole interaction, in the cases of $L^2$-subcritical and $L^2$-critical nonlinearity. For a subcritical nonlinearity we prove the existence and the uniqueness of Ground States at any mass. If the mass exceeds an explicit threshold, then there exists a positive excited state too. For the critical nonlinearity we prove that Ground States exist only in a specific interval of masses, while in a different interval excited states exist. We provide the value of the optimal constant in the Gagliardo-Nirenberg estimate and describe in the dipole case the branches of the stationary states as the strength of the interaction varies. Since all stationary states are explicitly computed, ours is a solvable model involving a non-standard interplay of a nonlinearity with a point interaction.

Ground states for the NLS on non-compact graphs with an attractive potential

We consider the subcritical nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation on non-compact quantum graphs with an attractive potential supported in the compact core, and investigate the existence and the nonexistence of Ground States, defined as minimizers of the energy at fixed $L^2$-norm, or mass. We finally reach the following picture: for small and large mass there are Ground States. Moreover, according to the metric features of the compact core of the graph and to the strength of the potential, there may be an interval of intermediate masses for which there are no Ground States. The study was inspired by the research on quantum waveguides, in which the curvature of a thin tube induces an effective attractive potential.

The search for NLS ground states on a hybrid domain: Motivations, methods, and results

We discuss the problem of establishing the existence of the Ground States for the subcritical focusing Nonlinear Schr\"odinger energy on a domain made of a line and a plane intersecting at a point. The problem is physically motivated by the experimental realization of hybrid traps for Bose-Einstein Condensates, that are able to concentrate the system on structures close to the domain we consider. In fact, such a domain approximates the trap as the temperature approaches the absolute zero. The spirit of the paper is mainly pedagogical, so we focus on the formulation of the problem and on the explanation of the result, giving references for the technical points and for the proofs.

NLS ground states on a hybrid plane

We study existence, nonexistence, and qualitative properties of ground states for a focusing, subcritical Nonlinear Schr\"odinger Equation on a hybrid plane, consisting of a half-line attached to a plane. Ground states are normalized minimizers of the associated energy, given by Nonlinear Schr\"odinger energies with contact interactions on the half-line and on the plane, plus a quadratic coupling term. At fixed mass, existence holds if the contact interaction on the half-line is not too repulsive, or the interaction on the plane is sufficiently attractive, or the coupling is strong enough. Nonexistence occurs when both interactions are sufficiently repulsive and the coupling is weak. Moreover, we discuss how the coupling affects the support and the symmetry properties of such ground states. These are the first results for a Nonlinear Schr\"odinger Equation on a mixed-dimensional manifold.

Microscopic derivation of a Schr\"odinger equation in dimension one with a nonlinear point interaction

We derive an effective equation for the dynamics of many identical bosons in dimension one in the presence of a tiny impurity. The interaction between every pair of bosons is mediated by the impurity through a positive three-body potential. Assuming a simultaneous mean-field and short-range scaling with the short-range proceeding slower than the mean-field, and choosing an initial fully condensed state, we prove propagation of chaos and obtain an effective one-particle Schr\"odinger equation with a defocusing nonlinearity concentrated at a point. More precisely, we prove the convergence of one-particle density operators in the trace-class topology and estimate the fluctuations as superexponential. This is the first derivation of the so-called nonlinear delta model, widely investigated in the last decades, as a phenomenological model for several physical phenomena.

Ground states for the planar NLSE with a point defect as minimizers of the constrained energy

We investigate the ground states for the focusing, subcritical nonlinear Schrödinger equation with a point defect in dimension two, defined as the minimizers of the energy functional at fixed mass. We prove that ground states exist for every positive mass and show a logarithmic singularity at the defect. Moreover, up to a multiplication by a constant phase, they are positive, radially symmetric, and decreasing along the radial direction. In order to overcome the obstacles arising from the uncommon structure of the energy space, that complicates the application of standard rearrangement theory, we move to the study of the minimizers of the action functional on the Nehari manifold and then establish a connection with the original problem. An ad hoc result on rearrangements is given to prove qualitative features of the ground states.

Existence, structure, and robustness of ground states of a NLSE in 3D with a point defect

We study the ground states for the Schrödinger equation with a focusing nonlinearity and a point interaction in dimension three. We establish that ground states exist for every value of the mass; moreover they are positive, radially symmetric, decreasing along the radial direction, and show a Coulombian singularity at the location of the point interaction. Remarkably, the existence of the ground states is independent of the attractive or repulsive character of the point interaction.

Discontinuous Ground States for NLSE on $\mathbb{R}$ with a Fülöp-Tsutsui $δ$ interaction

We analyse the existence and the stability of the ground states of the one-dimensional nonlinear Schrödinger equation with a focusing power nonlinearity and a defect located at the origin. In this paper a ground state is defined as a global minimizer of the action functional on the Nehari manifold and the defect considered is a Fülöp-Tsutsui $δ$ type, namely a $δ$ condition that allows discontinuities. The existence of ground states is proved by variational techniques, while the stability results from the Grillakis-Shatah-Strauss theory.

Competing nonlinearities in NLS equations as source of threshold phenomena on star graphs

We investigate the existence of ground states for the nonlinear Schr\"odinger Equation on star graphs with two subcritical focusing nonlinear terms: a standard power nonlinearity, and a delta-type nonlinearity located at the vertex. We find that if the standard nonlinearity is stronger than the pointwise one, then ground states exist for small mass only. On the contrary, if the pointwise nonlinearity prevails, then ground states exist for large mass only. All ground states are radial, in the sense that their restriction to each half-line is always the same function, and coincides with a soliton tail. Finally, if the two nonlinearities are of the same size, then the existence of ground states is insensitive to the value of the mass, and holds only on graphs with a small number of half-lines. Furthermore, we establish the orbital stability of the branch of radial stationary states to which the ground states belong, also in the mass regimes in which there is no ground state.

Non-Kirchhoff Vertices and NLS Ground States on graphs

We review some recent results and announce some new ones on the problem of the existence of ground states for the Nonlinear Schr\"odinger Equation on graphs endowed with vertices where the matching condition, instead of being free (or Kirchhoff's), is non-trivially interacting. In this category fall Dirac's delta conditions, delta prime, F\"ul\"op-Tsutsui, and others.

Stability of the standing waves of the concentrated NLSE in dimension two

In this paper we will continue the analysis of two dimensional Schrödinger equation with a fixed, pointwise, nonlinearity started in [2, 13]. In this model, the occurrence of a blow-up phenomenon has two peculiar features: the energy threshold under which all solutions blow up is strictly negative and coincides with the infimum of the energy of the standing waves; there is no critical power nonlinearity, i.e., for every power there exist blow-up solutions. Here we study the stability properties of stationary states to verify whether the anomalies mentioned before have any counterpart on the stability features.

Blow-up for the pointwise NLS in dimension two: absence of critical power

We consider the Schrödinger equation in dimension two with a fixed, pointwise, focusing nonlinearity and show the occurrence of a blow-up phenomenon with two peculiar features: first, the energy threshold under which all solutions blow up is strictly negative and coincides with the infimum of the energy of the standing waves. Second, there is no critical power nonlinearity, i.e. for every power there exist blow-up solutions. This last property is uncommon among the conservative Schrödinger equations with local nonlinearity.

Point interactions for 3D sub-Laplacians

In this paper we show that, for a sub-Laplacian $Δ$ on a $3$-dimensional manifold $M$, no point interaction centered at a point $q_0\in M$ exists. When $M$ is complete w.r.t. the associated sub-Riemannian structure, this means that $Δ$ acting on $C^\infty_0(M\setminus\{q_0\})$ is essentially self-adjoint. A particular example is the standard sub-Laplacian on the Heisenberg group. This is in stark contrast with what happens in a Riemannian manifold $N$, whose associated Laplace-Beltrami operator is never essentially self-adjoint on $C^\infty_0(N\setminus\{q_0\})$, if $\dim N\le 3$. We then apply this result to the Schrödinger evolution of a thin molecule, i.e., with a vanishing moment of inertia, rotating around its center of mass.

Scattering for the $L^2$ supercritical point NLS

We consider the 1D nonlinear Schrödinger equation with focusing point nonlinearity. "Point" means that the pure-power nonlinearity has an inhomogeneous potential and the potential is the delta function supported at the origin. This equation is used to model a Kerr-type medium with a narrow strip in the optic fibre. There are several mathematical studies on this equation and the local/global existence of solution, blow-up occurrence and blow-up profile have been investigated. In this paper we focus on the asymptotic behavior of the global solution, i.e, we show that the global solution scatters as t tends to minus/plus infinity in the $L^2$ supercritical case. The main argument we use is due to Kenig-Merle, but it is required to make use of an appropriate function space (not Strichartz space) according to the smoothing properties of the associated integral equation.

Quantum graphs and dimensional crossover: the honeycomb

We summarize features and results on the problem of the existence of Ground States for the Nonlinear Schrödinger Equation on doubly-periodic metric graphs. We extend the results known for the two--dimensional square grid graph to the honeycomb, made of infinitely-many identical hexagons. Specifically, we show how the coexistence between one--dimensional and two--dimensional scales in the graph structure leads to the emergence of threshold phenomena known as dimensional crossover.
