Improved Naturalness with a Heavy Higgs: An Alternative Road to LHC Physics

The quadratic divergences of the Higgs mass may be cancelled either accidentally or by the exchange of some new particles. Alternatively its impact on naturalness may be weakened by raising the Higgs mass, which requires changing the Standard Model below its natural cut-off. We show in detail how this can be achieved, while preserving perturbativity and consistency with the electroweak precision tests, by extending the Standard Model to include a second Higgs doublet that has neither a vev nor couplings to quarks and leptons. This Inert Doublet Model yields a perturbative and completely natural description of electroweak physics at all energies up to 1.5 TeV. The discrete symmetry that yields the Inert Doublet is unbroken, so that Dark Matter may be composed of neutral inert Higgs bosons, which may have escaped detection at LEP2. Predictions are given for multilepton events with missing transverse energy at the Large Hadron Collider, and for the direct detection of dark matter.

Improved Naturalness and the Two Higgs Doublet Model

The natural cutoff scale for the quadratically divergent top quark contribution to the Higgs mass parameter can be significantly raised above the surprisingly low standard model value, with important consequences for the LHC: the physics that cancels the top quark divergence may be out of reach, while an electroweak sector with "improved naturalness" may be discovered. Such a sector, consistent with electroweak precision tests, arises in the two Higgs doublet model with heavy Higgs and top quark interactions that approach strong coupling.

Dark Matter from an ultra-light pseudo-Goldsone-boson

Dark Matter (DM) and Dark Energy (DE) can be both described in terms of ultra-light Pseudo-Goldstone-Bosons (PGB) with masses m_{DM} ~ 10^{-23}eV and m_{DE} <= 10^{-33}eV respectively. Following Barbieri et al, we entertain the possibility that a PGB exists with mass m_I intermediate between these two limits, giving a partial contribution to DM. We evaluate the related effects on the power spectrum of the matter density perturbations and on the cosmic microwave background and we derive the bounds on the density fraction, f_I, of this intermediate field from current data, with room for a better sensitivity on f_I in the near future. We also give a simple and unified analytic description of the free streaming effects both for an ultra-light scalar and for a massive neutrino.

Mirror World at the Large Hadron Collider

A mirror world can modify in a striking way the LHC signals of the Higgs sector. An exact or approximate Z_2 symmetry between the mirror world and our world allows large mixing between the Higgs bosons of these worlds, leading to production rates and branching ratios for these states that are markedly different from the standard model and are characteristic of a mirror world. The constraints on these Higgs boson masses from precision electroweak data differ from the standard model bound, so that the new physics that cancels the quadratic divergence induced by the top quark may appear at a larger scale, possibly beyond the reach of the LHC. However, the scale of new physics needed to cancel the quadratic divergence induced by the Higgs boson is not significantly changed. With small breakings of the Z_2 parity, the lightest mirror quarks (and possibly charged mirror leptons) could be the dark matter in the universe, forming galactic halos that are stable to cooling. A possible signal from the relic radiation density of the mirror world is also discussed.

Dark Energy and Right-Handed Neutrinos

We explore the possibility that a CP violating phase of the neutrino mass matrix is promoted to a pseudo-Goldstone-boson field and is identified as the quintessence field for Dark Energy. By requiring that the quintessence potential be calculable from a Lagrangian, and that the extreme flatness of the potential be stable under radiative corrections, we are led to an essentially unique model. Lepton number is violated only by Majorana masses of light, right-handed neutrinos, comparable to the Dirac masses that mix right- with left-handed neutrinos. We outline the rich and constrained neutrino phenomenology that results from this proposal.

Electroweak symmetry breaking after LEP1 and LEP2

In a generic 'universal' theory of electroweak symmetry breaking, non fine-tuned heavy new physics affects the low-energy data through four parameters, which include and properly extend the generally insufficient S and T. Only by adding the LEP2 data to the global electroweak fit, can all these four form factors be determined and deviations from the SM be strongly constrained. Several of the recently proposed models (little Higgs, gauge bosons in extra dimensions or Higgsless models in 5D) are recognized to be 'universal' in a straightforward way after a proper definition of the effective vector boson fields. Among various applications, we show that proposed Higgsless models in 5D, when calculable, do not provide a viable description of electroweak symmetry breaking in their full range of parameters.

ElectroWeak Symmetry Breaking as of 2003, on the way to the Large Hadron Collider

I review the status of the ElectroWeak Symmetry Breaking problem. The lectures are naturally divided into two parts. The first is mostly devoted to overview the impact of current data on the issue of EWSB. The tools are known, the latest data are included. Always in the first part, I say why I care about the "little hierarchy" problem and I summarize how some proposals for EWSB, recent and less recent, are confronted with this problem. Motivated by these considerations, in the second part I describe the essential features of a proposal for breaking supersymmetry, and consequently the electroweak symmetry, by boundary conditions on an extra dimension.

Weakly coupled Higgsless theories and precision electroweak tests

In 5 dimensions the electroweak symmetry can be broken by boundary conditions, leading to a new type of Higgsless theories. These could in principle improve on the 4D case by extending the perturbative domain to energies higher than $4 πv$ and by allowing a better fit to the electroweak precision tests. Nevertheless, it is unlikely that both these improvements can be achieved, as we show by discussing these problems in an explicit model.

Baryogenesis through leptogenesis

Baryogenesis by heavy-neutrino decay and sphaleron reprocessing of both baryon and lepton number is reconsidered, paying special attention to the flavour structure of the general evolution equations and developing an approximate but sufficiently accurate analytic solution to the prototype evolution equation. Two different models of neutrino masses are examined, based on an Abelian U(1) or a non-Abelian U(2) family symmetry. We show that a consistent picture of baryogenesis can emerge in both cases, although with significant differences.

Radiative Electroweak Symmetry Breaking from a Quasi-Localized Top Quark

We consider 5D supersymmetric SU(3) x SU(2) x U(1) theories compactified at the TeV scale on S^1/Z_2 with supersymmetry broken by boundary conditions. Localizing the top quark at a boundary of a fifth dimension by a bulk mass term M_t, reduces the strength of radiative electroweak symmetry breaking. For M_t R approximately 1--2, the natural value for the top and bottom squark masses are raised to 500--1200 GeV, and all other superpartners may have masses of the compactification scale, which has a natural range of 1/R ~= 1.5--3.5 TeV. The superpartner masses depend only on 1/R, and are precisely correlated amongst themselves and with the mass of the Higgs boson, which is lighter than 130 GeV.

The Higgs mass as a function of the compactification scale

We calculate to a few percent precision the Higgs potential in a model with supersymmetry broken by boundary conditions on an extra-dimension, compactified to a segment of length $L$, and a top quark quasi-localized on one of the two boundaries. 1/L alone, in the range 2-4 TeV, determines the Higgs mass, in the range 110-125 GeV, and the spectrum of gauginos, higgsinos and of the third-generation squarks. Lower values of 1/L cannot be excluded, with a progressive delocalization of the top quark.

Natural relations among physical observables in the neutrino mass matrix

We find all possible relations among physical observables arising from neutrino mass matrices that describe in a natural way the currently observed pattern (tan_23 and tan_12 large, dm^2_Sun/dm^2_Atm and tan_13 small) in terms of a minimum number of parameters. Natural here means due only to the relative smallness (vanishing) of some parameters in the relevant lagrangian, without special relations or accidental cancellations among them.

Non standard analysis of the solar neutrino anomaly (updated including the SNO day/night spectral data)

Continuing previous work, a model independent analysis of the solar neutrino anomaly is performed in terms of neutrino oscillations, allowing a comparison with the predictions of the Standard Solar Model. SMA and LMA solutions emerge also in this case, although somewhat different from the standard ones. The significance of the NC/CC double ratio measurable in SNO is illustrated in this context.

Breaking the electroweak symmetry and supersymmetry by a compact extra dimension

We revisit in some more detail a recent specific proposal for the breaking of the electroweak symmetry and of supersymmetry by a compact extra dimension. Possible mass terms for the Higgs and the matter hypermultiplets are considered and their effects on the spectrum analyzed. Previous conclusions are reinforced and put on firmer ground.

Softly Broken Supersymmetric Desert from Orbifold Compactification

A new viewpoint for the gauge hierarchy problem is proposed: compactification at a large scale, 1/R, leads to a low energy effective theory with supersymmetry softly broken at a much lower scale, α/R. The hierarchy is induced by an extremely small angle αwhich appears in the orbifold compactification boundary conditions. The same orbifold boundary conditions break Peccei-Quinn symmetry, leading to a new solution to the μproblem. Explicit 5d theories are constructed with gauge groups SU(3) \times SU(2) \times U(1) and SU(5), with matter in the bulk or on the brane, which lead to the (next-to) minimal supersymmetric standard model below the compactification scale. In all cases the soft supersymmetry-breaking and μparameters originate from bulk kinetic energy terms, and are highly constrained. The supersymmetric flavor and CP problems are solved.

b -> s gamma in a calculable model of Electroweak Symmetry Breaking

In a recently proposed extension of the Standard Model with a compact extra dimension of size R we compute the leading corrections, of relative order (m_t R)^2, to the Branching Ratio B -> X_s gamma. For 1/R = 370 \pm 80 GeV, the branching ratio is increased in a significant way relative to the SM, although not al level of being inconsistent with present measurements.

Models of Scherk-Schwarz Symmetry Breaking in 5D: Classification and Calculability

The form of the most general orbifold breaking of gauge, global and supersymmetries with a single extra dimension is given. In certain theories the Higgs boson mass is ultraviolet finite due to an unbroken local supersymmetry, which is explicitly exhibited. We construct: a 1 parameter SU(3) \times SU(2) \times U(1) theory with 1 bulk Higgs hypermultiplet, a 2 parameter SU(3) \times SU(2) \times U(1) theory with 2 bulk Higgs hypermultiplets, and a 2 parameter SU(5) \to SU(3) \times SU(2) \times U(1) theory with 2 bulk Higgs hypermultiplets, and demonstrate that these theories are unique. We compute the Higgs mass and compactification scale in the SU(3) \times SU(2) \times U(1) theory with 1 bulk Higgs hypermultiplet.
