Detection efficiency and spatial resolution of Monolithic Active Pixel Sensors bent to different radii

Bent monolithic active pixel sensors are the basis for the planned fully cylindrical ultra low material budget tracking detector ITS3 of the ALICE experiment. This paper presents results from testbeam campaigns using high-energy particles to verify the performance of 50 um thick bent ALPIDE chips in terms of efficiency and spatial resolution. The sensors were bent to radii of 18, 24 and 30 mm, slightly smaller than the foreseen bending radii of the future ALICE ITS3 layers. An efficiency larger than $99.9\%$ and a spatial resolution of approximately 5 um, in line with the nominal operation of flat ALPIDE sensors, is obtained at nominal operating conditions. These values are found to be independent of the bending radius and thus constitute an additional milestone in the demonstration of the feasibility of the planned ITS3 detector. In addition, a special geometry in which the beam particles graze the chip and traverse it laterally over distances of up to 3 mm is investigated.

Characterisation of analogue Monolithic Active Pixel Sensor test structures implemented in a 65 nm CMOS imaging process

Analogue test structures were fabricated using the Tower Partners Semiconductor Co. CMOS 65 nm ISC process. The purpose was to characterise and qualify this process and to optimise the sensor for the next generation of Monolithic Active Pixels Sensors for high-energy physics. The technology was explored in several variants which differed by: doping levels, pixel geometries and pixel pitches (10-25 $μ$m). These variants have been tested following exposure to varying levels of irradiation up to 3 MGy and $10^{16}$ 1 MeV n$_\text{eq}$ cm$^{-2}$. Here the results from prototypes that feature direct analogue output of a 4$\times$4 pixel matrix are reported, allowing the systematic and detailed study of charge collection properties. Measurements were taken both using $^{55}$Fe X-ray sources and in beam tests using minimum ionizing particles. The results not only demonstrate the feasibility of using this technology for particle detection but also serve as a reference for future applications and optimisations.

Notes on supersymmetric Wilson loops on a two-sphere

We study a recently discovered family of 1/8-BPS supersymmetric Wilson loops in N=4 super Yang-Mills theory and their string theory duals. The operators are defined for arbitrary contours on a two-sphere in space-time, and they were conjectured to be captured perturbatively by 2d bosonic Yang-Mills theory. In the AdS dual, they are described by pseudo-holomorphic string surfaces living on a certain submanifold of AdS_5 x S^5. We show that the regularized area of these string surfaces is invariant under area preserving diffeomorphisms of the boundary loop, in agreement with the conjecture. Further, we find a connection between the pseudo-holomorphicity equations and an auxiliary sigma-model on S^3, which may help to construct new 1/8-BPS string solutions. We also show that the conjectured relation to 2d Yang-Mills implies that a connected correlator of two Wilson loops is computed by a Hermitian Gaussian two-matrix model. On the AdS dual side, we argue that the connected correlator is described by two disconnected disks interacting through the exchange of supergravity modes, and we show that this agrees with the strong coupling planar limit of the two-matrix model.

Dual Superconformal Symmetry from AdS5 x S5 Superstring Integrability

We discuss 2d duality transformations in the classical AdS5 x S5 superstring and their effect on the integrable structure. T-duality along four directions in Poincare parametrization of AdS5 maps the bosonic part of the superstring action into itself. On bosonic level, this duality may be understood as a symmetry of the first-order (phase space) system of equations for the coset components of the current. The associated Lax connection is invariant modulo the action of an so(2,4)-automorphism. We then show that this symmetry extends to the full superstring, provided one supplements the transformation of the bosonic components of the current with a transformation on the fermionic ones. At the level of the action, this symmetry can be seen by combining the bosonic duality transformation with a similar one applied to part of the fermionic superstring coordinates. As a result, the full superstring action is mapped into itself, albeit in a different kappa-symmetry gauge. One implication is that the dual model has the same superconformal symmetry group as the original one, and this may be seen as a consequence of the integrability of the superstring. The invariance of the Lax connection under the duality implies a map on the full set of conserved charges that should interchange some of the Noether (local) charges with hidden (non-local) ones and vice versa.

Supersymmetric Wilson loops on S^3

This paper studies in great detail a family of supersymmetric Wilson loop operators in N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory we have recently found. For a generic curve on an S^3 in space-time the loops preserve two supercharges but we will also study special cases which preserve 4, 8 and 16 supercharges. For certain loops we find the string theory dual explicitly and for the general case we show that string solutions satisfy a first order differential equation. This equation expresses the fact that the strings are pseudo-holomorphic with respect to a novel almost complex structure we construct on AdS_4 x S^2. We then discuss loops restricted to S^2 and provide evidence that they can be calculated in terms of similar observables in purely bosonic YM in two dimensions on the sphere.

On T-Duality and Integrability for Strings on AdS Backgrounds

We discuss an interplay between T-duality and integrability for certain classical non-linear sigma models. In particular, we consider strings on the AdS_5 x S^5 background and perform T-duality along the four isometry directions of AdS_5 in the Poincare patch. The T-dual of the AdS_5 sigma model is again a sigma model on an AdS_5 space. This classical T-duality relation was used in the recently uncovered connection between light-like Wilson loops and MHV gluon scattering amplitudes in the strong coupling limit of the AdS/CFT duality. We show that the explicit coordinate dependence along the T-duality directions of the associated Lax connection (flat current) can be eliminated by means of a field dependent gauge transformation. As a result, the gauge equivalent Lax connection can easily be T-dualized, i.e. written in terms of the dual set of isometric coordinates. The T-dual Lax connection can be used for the derivation of infinitely many conserved charges in the T-dual model. Our construction implies that local (Noether) charges of the original model are mapped to non-local charges of the T-dual model and vice versa.

Metastable SUSY Breaking and Supergravity at Finite Temperature

We study how coupling to supergravity affects the phase structure of a system exhibiting dynamical supersymmetry breaking in a metastable vacuum. More precisely, we consider the Seiberg dual of SQCD coupled to supergravity at finite temperature. We show that the gravitational interactions decrease the critical temperature for the second order phase transition in the quark direction, that is also present in the global case. Furthermore, we find that, due to supergravity, a new second order phase transition occurs in the meson direction, whenever there is a nonvanishing constant term in the superpotential. Notably, this phase transition is a necessary condition for the fields to roll, as the system cools down, towards the metastable susy breaking vacuum, because of the supergravity-induced shift of the metastable minimum away from zero meson vevs. Finally, we comment on the phase structure of the KKLT model with uplifting sector given by the Seiberg dual of SQCD.

Wilson loops: From four-dimensional SYM to two-dimensional YM

In this note we study supersymmetric Wilson loops restricted to an S^2 submanifold of four-dimensional space in N=4 super Yang-Mills. We provide evidence from both perturbation theory and the AdS dual that those loops are equal to the analogous observables in two-dimensional Yang-Mills on S^2 (excluding non-perturbative contributions). This relates a subsector of N=4 SYM to a low-dimensional soluble model and also suggests that this subsector of N =4 SYM is invariant under area preserving diffeomorphisms.

More supersymmetric Wilson loops

We present a large new family of Wilson loop operators in N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory. For an arbitrary curve on the three dimensional sphere one can add certain scalar couplings to the Wilson loop so it preserves at least two supercharges. Some previously known loops, notably the 1/2 BPS circle, belong to this class, but we point out many more special cases which were not known before and could provide further tests of the AdS/CFT correspondence.

On the D3-brane description of some 1/4 BPS Wilson loops

Recently it has been proposed that Wilson loops in high-dimensional representations in N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory (or multiply wrapped loops) are described by D-branes in AdS_5 x S^5, rather than by fundamental strings. Thus far explicit D3-brane solutions have been only found in the case of the half-BPS circle or line. Here we present D3-brane solutions describing some 1/4 BPS loops. In one case, where the loop is conjectured to be given by a Gaussian matrix model, the action of the brane correctly reproduces the expectation value of the Wilson loop including all 1/N corrections at large λ. As in the corresponding string solution, here too we find two classical solutions, one stable and one not. The unstable one contributes exponentially small corrections that agree with the matrix model calculation.

Super Calabi-Yau's and Special Lagrangians

We apply mirror symmetry to the super Calabi-Yau manifold CP^{(n|n+1)} and show that the mirror can be recast in a form which depends only on the superdimension and which is reminiscent of a generalized conifold. We discuss its geometrical properties in comparison to the familiar conifold geometry. In the second part of the paper examples of special-Lagrangian submanifolds are constructed for a class of super Calabi-Yau's. We finally comment on their infinitesimal deformations.

Half-BPS Geometries and Thermodynamics of Free Fermions

Solutions of type IIB supergravity which preserve half of the supersymmetries have a dual description in terms of free fermions, as elucidated by the "bubbling AdS" construction of Lin, Lunin and Maldacena. In this paper we study the half-BPS geometry associated with a gas of free fermions in thermodynamic equilibrium obeying the Fermi-Dirac distribution. We consider both regimes of low and high temperature. In the former case, we present a detailed computation of the ADM mass of the supergravity solution and find agreement with the thermal energy of the fermions. The solution has a naked null singularity and, by general arguments, is expected to develop a finite area horizon once stringy corrections are included. By introducing a stretched horizon, we propose a way to match the entropy of the fermions with the entropy of the geometry in the low temperature regime. In the opposite limit of high temperature, the solution resembles a dilute gas of D3 branes. Also in this case the ADM mass of the geometry agrees with the thermal energy of the fermions.

Operator product expansion of higher rank Wilson loops from D-branes and matrix models

In this paper we study correlation functions of circular Wilson loops in higher dimensional representations with chiral primary operators of N=4 super Yang-Mills theory. This is done using the recently established relation between higher rank Wilson loops in gauge theory and D-branes with electric fluxes in supergravity. We verify our results with a matrix model computation, finding perfect agreement in both the symmetric and the antisymmetric case.

Instantons and Matter in N=1/2 Supersymmetric Gauge Theory

We extend the instanton calculus for N=1/2 U(2) supersymmetric gauge theory by including one massless flavor. We write the equations of motion at leading order in the coupling constant and we solve them exactly in the non(anti)commutativity parameter C. The profile of the matter superfield is deformed through linear and quadratic corrections in C. Higher order corrections are absent because of the fermionic nature of the back-reaction. The instanton effective action, in addition to the usual 't Hooft term, includes a contribution of order C^2 and is N=1/2 invariant. We argue that the N=1 result for the gluino condensate is not modified by the presence of the new term in the effective action.

A Note on Twistor Gravity Amplitudes

In a recent paper, Witten proposed a surprising connection between perturbative gauge theory and a certain topological model in twistor space. In particular, he showed that gluon amplitudes are localized on holomorphic curves. In this note we present some preliminary considerations on the possibility of having a similar localization for gravity amplitudes.
