Improved regularity of second derivatives for subharmonic functions

In this note, we prove that if a subharmonic function $Δu\ge 0$ has pure second derivatives $\partial_{ii} u$ that are signed measures, then their negative part $(\partial_{ii} u)_-$ belongs to $L^1$ (in particular, it is not singular). We then show that this improvement of regularity cannot be upgraded to $L^p$ for any $p > 1$. We finally relate this problem to a natural question on the one-sided regularity of solutions to the obstacle problem with rough obstacles.

The four-state problem and convex integration for linear differential operators

We show that the four-state problem for general linear differential operators is flexible. The only flexibility result available in this context is the one for the five-state problem for the curl operator due to B. Kirchheim and D. Preiss, [Section 4.3, Rigidity and Geometry of Microstructures, 2003], and its generalization [Calculus of Variations and Partial Differential Equations, 2017]. To build our counterexample, we extend the convex integration method introduced by S. Müller and V. \v Sverák in [Annals of Mathematics, 2003] to linear operators that admit a potential, and we exploit the notion of \emph{large} $T_N$ configuration introduced by C. Förster and L. Sz{é}kelyhidi in [Calculus of Variations and Partial Differential Equations, 2017].

A multi-material transport problem with arbitrary marginals

In this paper we study general transportation problems in $\mathbb{R}^n$, in which $m$ different goods are moved simultaneously. The initial and final positions of the goods are prescribed by measures $μ^-$, $μ^+$ on $\mathbb{R}^n$ with values in $\mathbb{R}^m$. When the measures are finite atomic, a discrete transportation network is a measure $T$ on $\mathbb{R}^n$ with values in $\mathbb{R}^{n\times m}$ represented by an oriented graph $\mathcal{G}$ in $\mathbb{R}^n$ whose edges carry multiplicities in $\mathbb{R}^m$. The constraint is encoded in the relation ${\rm div}(T)=μ^--μ^+$. The cost of the discrete transportation $T$ is obtained integrating on $\mathcal{G}$ a general function $\mathcal{C}:\mathbb{R}^m\to\mathbb{R}$ of the multiplicity. When the initial data $\left(μ^-,μ^+\right)$ are arbitrary (possibly diffuse) measures, the cost of a transportation network between them is computed by relaxation of the functional on graphs mentioned above. Our main result establishes the existence of cost-minimizing transportation networks for arbitrary data $\left(μ^-,μ^+\right)$. Furthermore, under additional assumptions on the cost integrand $\mathcal{C}$, we prove the existence of transportation networks with finite cost and the stability of the minimizers with respect to variations of the given data. Finally, we provide an explicit integral representation formula for the cost of rectifiable transportation networks, and we characterize the costs such that every transportation network with finite cost is rectifiable.

Regularity for graphs with bounded anisotropic mean curvature

We prove that $m$-dimensional Lipschitz graphs with anisotropic mean curvature bounded in $L^p$, $p>m$, are regular almost everywhere in every dimension and codimension. This provides partial or full answers to multiple open questions arising in the literature. The anisotropic energy is required to satisfy a novel ellipticity condition, which holds for instance in a $C^2$ neighborhood of the area functional. This condition is proved to imply the atomic condition. In particular we provide the first non-trivial class of examples of anisotropic energies in high codimension satisfying the atomic condition, addressing an open question in the field. As a byproduct, we deduce the rectifiability of varifolds (resp. of the mass of varifolds) with locally bounded anisotropic first variation for a $C^2$ (resp. $C^1$) neighborhood of the area functional. In addition to these examples, we also provide a class of anisotropic energies in high codimension, far from the area functional, for which the rectifiability of the mass of varifolds with locally bounded anisotropic first variation holds. To conclude, we show that the atomic condition excludes non-trivial Young measures in the case of anisotropic stationary graphs.

On the commutativity of flows of rough vector fields

In the class of Sobolev vector fields in $\mathbb{R}^n$ of bounded divergence, for which the theory of DiPerna and Lions provides a well defined notion of flow, we characterize the vector fields whose flow commute in terms of the Lie bracket and of a regularity condition on the flows themselves. This extends a classical result of Frobenius in the smooth setting.

On the constancy theorem for anisotropic energies through differential inclusions

In this paper we study stationary graphs for functionals of geometric nature defined on currents or varifolds. The point of view we adopt is the one of differential inclusions, introduced in this context in the recent paper [De Lellis, De Philippis, Kirchheim, Tione, 2019]. In particular, given a polyconvex integrand $f$, we define a set of matrices $C_f$ that allows us to rewrite the stationarity condition for a graph with multiplicity as a differential inclusion. Then we prove that if $f$ is assumed to be non-negative, then in $C_f$ there is no $T'_N$ configuration, thus recovering the main result of [De Lellis, De Philippis, Kirchheim, Tione, 2019] as a corollary. Finally, we show that if the hypothesis of non-negativity is dropped, one can not only find $T'_N$ configurations in $C_f$, but it is also possible to construct via convex integration a very degenerate stationary point with multiplicity.

The oriented mailing problem and its convex relaxation

In this note we introduce a new model for the mailing problem in branched transportation in order to allow the cost functional to take into account the orientation of the moving particles. This gives an effective answer to [Problem 15.9] of the book "Optimal transportation networks" by Bernot, Caselles, and Morel. Moreover we define a convex relaxation in terms of rectifiable currents with group coefficients. With such approach we provide the problem with a notion of calibration. Using similar techniques we define a convex relaxation and a corresponding notion of calibration for a variant of the Steiner tree problem in which a connectedness constraint is assigned only among a certain partition of a given set of finitely many points.

Minimal graphs and differential inclusions

In this paper, we study the differential inclusion associated to the minimal surface system for two-dimensional graphs in $\mathbb{R}^{2 + n}$. We prove regularity of $W^{1,2}$ solutions and a compactness result for approximate solutions of this differential inclusion in $W^{1,p}$. Moreover, we make a perturbation argument to infer that for every $R > 0$ there exists $α(R) >0$ such that $R$-Lipschitz stationary points for functionals $α$-close in the $C^2$ norm to the area functional are always regular. We also use a counterexample of \cite{KIRK} to show the existence of irregular critical points to inner variations of the area functional.

Geometric measure theory and differential inclusions

In this paper we consider Lipschitz graphs of functions which are stationary points of strictly polyconvex energies. Such graphs can be thought as integral currents, resp. varifolds, which are stationary for some elliptic integrands. The regularity theory for the latter is a widely open problem, in particular no counterpart of the classical Allard's theorem is known. We address the issue from the point of view of differential inclusions and we show that the relevant ones do not contain the class of laminates which are used in [22] and [25] to construct nonregular solutions. Our result is thus an indication that an Allard's type result might be valid for general elliptic integrands. We conclude the paper by listing a series of open questions concerning the regularity of stationary points for elliptic integrands.

On the upper semicontinuity of a quasiconcave functional

In the recent paper \cite{SER}, the second author proved a divergence-quasiconcavity inequality for the following functional $ \mathbb{D}(A)=\int_{\mathbb{T}^n} det(A(x))^{\frac{1}{n-1}}\,dx$ defined on the space of $p$-summable positive definite matrices with zero divergence. We prove that this implies the weak upper semicontinuity of the functional $\mathbb{D}(\cdot)$ if and only if $p>\frac{n}{n-1}$.

A multi-material transport problem and its convex relaxation via rectifiable $G$-currents

In this paper we study a variant of the branched transportation problem, that we call multi-material transport problem. This is a transportation problem, where distinct commodities are transported simultaneously along a network. The cost of the transportation depends on the network used to move the masses, as it is common in models studied in branched transportation. The main novelty is that in our model the cost per unit length of the network does not depend only on the total flow, but on the actual quantity of each commodity. This allows to take into account different interactions between the transported goods. We propose an Eulerian formulation of the discrete problem, describing the flow of each commodity through every point of the network. We provide minimal assumptions on the cost, under which existence of solutions can be proved. Moreover, we prove that, under mild additional assumptions, the problem can be rephrased as a mass minimization problem in a class of rectifiable currents with coefficients in a group, allowing to introduce a notion of calibration. The latter result is new even in the well studied framework of the "single-material" branched transportation.
