Degenerations of multisingularities and Artin algebras

We study the degeneration hierarchy of commutative, associative, finite-dimensional complex Artin algebras. Instead of studying degenerations in the Hilbert scheme, we introduce a singularity-theoretic notion of degeneration based on the correspondence between singularities of stable map germs and local algebras. This leads to a natural partially ordered set, the stable hierarchy, in which one algebra degenerates to another if nearby singularities realize the latter. Our first main result is that, in a wide range of dimensions, this hierarchy can be determined purely from symmetry data, namely from the automorphism groups of the algebras or singularities. The key tool is the theory of certain equivariant characteristic classes called Thom polynomials of multisingularities, established by Kazarian. Suitable substitutions into these polynomials completely characterize the hierarchy. As a consequence, the computation of degeneration posets becomes algorithmic in nature. In our second main result, we prove that our singularity-theoretic hierarchy extends the algebraic hierarchy obtained from deformation theory. While deformation theory requires the dimension (rank) to be fixed, our hierarchy generalizes this framework by comparing algebras of varying dimensions.

Higher characteristic classes of multisingularity loci

A map between manifolds induces stratifications of both the source and the target according to the occurring multisingularities. In this paper, we study universal expressions-called higher Thom polynomials-that describe the Segre-Schwartz-MacPherson class of such multisingularity loci. We prove a Structure Theorem reducing these Thom polynomials to the data of a linear series associated with each multisingularity. The series corresponding to the empty multisingularity, referred to as the Master Series, plays a distinguished role. Motivated by connections with geometric representation theory, we further prove an Interpolation Theorem that allows Thom polynomials to be computed algorithmically within Mather's range of nice dimensions. As an application, we derive an explicit formula for the image Milnor number of quasihomogeneous germs, providing one side of the celebrated Mond conjecture, computable up to the theoretical bound.

Geometry of fibers of the multiplication map of deep linear neural networks

We study the geometry of the algebraic set of tuples of composable matrices which multiply to a fixed matrix, using tools from the theory of quiver representations. In particular, we determine its codimension $C$ and the number $θ$ of its top-dimensional irreducible components. Our solution is presented in three forms: a Poincaré series in equivariant cohomology, a quadratic integer program, and an explicit formula. In the course of the proof, we establish a surprising property: $C$ and $θ$ are invariant under arbitrary permutations of the dimension vector. We also show that the real log-canonical threshold of the function taking a tuple to the square Frobenius norm of its product is $C/2$. These results are motivated by the study of deep linear neural networks in machine learning and Bayesian statistics (singular learning theory) and show that deep linear networks are in a certain sense ``mildly singular".

Fixed point counts and motivic invariants of bow varieties of affine type A

We compute the equivariant K-theory of torus fixed points of Cherkis bow varieties of affine type A. We deduce formulas for the generating series of the Euler numbers of these varieties and observe their modularity in certain cases. We also obtain refined formulas on the motivic level for a class of bow varieties strictly containing Nakajima quiver varieties. These series hence generalise results of Nakajima-Yoshioka. As a special case, we obtain formulas for certain Zastava spaces. We define a parabolic analogue of Nekrasov's partition function and find an equation relating it to the classical partition function.

3d Mirror Symmetry and Elliptic Stable Envelopes

We consider a pair of quiver varieties (X;X') related by 3d mirror symmetry, where X =T*Gr(k,n) is the cotangent bundle of the Grassmannian of k-planes of n-dimensional space. We give formulas for the elliptic stable envelopes on both sides. We show an existence of an equivariant elliptic cohomology class on X $\times$ X' (the Mother function) whose restrictions to X and X' are the elliptic stable envelopes of those varieties. This implies, that the restriction matrices of the elliptic stable envelopes for X and X' are equal after transposition and identification of the equivariant parameters on one side with the Kähler parameters on the dual side.

Three-Dimensional Mirror Self-Symmetry of the Cotangent Bundle of the Full Flag Variety

Let $X$ be a holomorphic symplectic variety with a torus $\mathsf{T}$ action and a finite fixed point set of cardinality $k$. We assume that elliptic stable envelope exists for $X$. Let $A_{I,J}= \operatorname{Stab}(J)|_{I}$ be the $k\times k$ matrix of restrictions of the elliptic stable envelopes of $X$ to the fixed points. The entries of this matrix are theta-functions of two groups of variables: the Kähler parameters and equivariant parameters of $X$. We say that two such varieties $X$ and $X'$ are related by the 3d mirror symmetry if the fixed point sets of $X$ and $X'$ have the same cardinality and can be identified so that the restriction matrix of $X$ becomes equal to the restriction matrix of $X'$ after transposition and interchanging the equivariant and Kähler parameters of $X$, respectively, with the Kähler and equivariant parameters of $X'$. The first examples of pairs of 3d symmetric varieties were constructed in [Rimányi R., Smirnov A., Varchenko A., Zhou Z., arXiv:1902.03677], where the cotangent bundle $T^*\operatorname{Gr}(k,n)$ to a Grassmannian is proved to be a 3d mirror to a Nakajima quiver variety of $A_{n-1}$-type. In this paper we prove that the cotangent bundle of the full flag variety is 3d mirror self-symmetric. That statement in particular leads to nontrivial theta-function identities.

Elliptic classes of Schubert varieties

We introduce new notions in elliptic Schubert calculus: the (twisted) Borisov-Libgober classes of Schubert varieties in general homogeneous spaces G/P. While these classes do not depend on any choice, they depend on a set of new variables. For the definition of our classes we calculate multiplicities of some divisors in Schubert varieties, which were only known for full flag varieties before. Our approach leads to a simple recursions for the elliptic classes. Comparing this recursion with R-matrix recursions of the so-called elliptic weight functions of Rimanyi-Tarasov-Varchenko we prove that weight functions represent elliptic classes of Schubert varieties.

Elliptic Dynamical Quantum Groups and Equivariant Elliptic Cohomology

We define an elliptic version of the stable envelope of Maulik and Okounkov for the equivariant elliptic cohomology of cotangent bundles of Grassmannians. It is a version of the construction proposed by Aganagic and Okounkov and is based on weight functions and shuffle products. We construct an action of the dynamical elliptic quantum group associated with $\mathfrak{gl}_2$ on the equivariant elliptic cohomology of the union of cotangent bundles of Grassmannians. The generators of the elliptic quantum groups act as difference operators on sections of admissible bundles, a notion introduced in this paper.

Quantum dilogarithm identities for the square product of A-type Dynkin quivers

The famous pentagon identity for quantum dilogarithms has a generalization for every Dynkin quiver, due to Reineke. A more advanced generalization is associated with a pair of alternating Dynkin quivers, due to Keller. The description and proof of Keller's identities involves cluster algebras and cluster categories, and the statement of the identity is implicit. In this paper we describe Keller's identities explicitly, and prove them by a dimension counting argument. Namely, we consider quiver representations $\boldsymbol{\mathrm{Rep}}_γ$ together with a superpotential function $W_γ$, and calculate the Betti numbers of the equivariant $W_γ$ rapid decay cohomology algebra of $\boldsymbol{\mathrm{Rep}}_γ$ in two different ways corresponding to two natural stratifications of $\boldsymbol{\mathrm{Rep}}_γ$. This approach is suggested by Kontsevich and Soibelman in relation with the Cohomological Hall Algebra of quivers, and the associated Donaldson-Thomas invariants.
