Enhancing data-limited assessments with random effects: A case study on Korea chub mackerel (Scomber japonicus)

In a state-space framework, temporal variations in fishery-dependent processes can be modeled as random effects. This modeling flexibility makes state-space models (SSMs) powerful tools for data-limited assessments. Though SSMs enable the model-based inference of the unobserved processes, their flexibility can lead to overfitting and non-identifiability issues. To address these challenges, we developed a suite of state-space length-based age-structured models and applied them to the Korean chub mackerel (Scomber japonicus) stock. Our research demonstrated that incorporating temporal variations in fishery-dependent processes can rectify model mis-specification but may compromise robustness, which can be diagnosed through a series of model checking processes. To tackle non-identifiability, we used a non-degenerate estimator, implementing a gamma distribution as a penalty for the standard deviation parameters of observation errors. This penalty function enabled the simultaneous estimation of both process and observation error variances with minimal bias, a notably challenging task in SSMs. These results highlight the importance of model checking and the effectiveness of the penalized approach in estimating SSMs. Additionally, we discussed novel assessment outcomes for the mackerel stock.

A Semi-Parametric Approach to Fitting Gas Pressure Profiles of Galaxy Clusters

This study focuses on modelling galaxy cluster gas profiles via a semi-parametric nodal approach. While traditional methods like the generalised Navarro-Frenk-White (gNFW) often encounter parameter degeneracy, our flexible node-based method precisely defines a cluster gas pressure profile. Using Planck space telescope data from the Coma region, our model, focused on the pressure-radius relationship, showcases enhanced flexibility over the gNFW. Bayesian analyses indicated an optimal five-node structure for the Coma cluster pressure profile.

Bayesian non-parametric specification of bathtub shaped hazard rate functions

Hazard rate functions of natural and manufactured systems often show a bathtub shaped failure rate. A high early rate of failures is followed by an extended period of useful working life where failures are rare, and finally the failure rate increases as the system reaches the end of its life. Parametric modelling of such hazard rate functions can lead to unnecessarily restrictive assumptions on the function shape, however the most common non-parametric estimator (the Kaplan-Meier estimator) does not allow specification of the requirement that it be bathtub shaped. In this paper we extend the Lo and Weng (1989) approach and specify four nonparametric bathtub hazard rate functions drawn from Gamma Process Priors. We implement and demonstrate simulation for these four models.

Warranty Cost Analysis with an Alternating Geometric Process

In this study we model the warranty claims process and evaluate the warranty servicing costs under non-renewing and renewing free repair warranties. We assume that the repair time for rectifying the claims is non-zero and the repair cost is a function of the length of the repair time. To accommodate the ageing of the product and repair equipment, we use a decreasing geometric process to model the consecutive operational times and an increasing geometric process to model the consecutive repair times. We identify and study the alternating geometric process (AGP), which is an alternating process with cycles consisting of the item's operational time followed by the corresponding repair time. We derive new results for the AGP in finite horizon and use them to evaluate the warranty costs over the warranty period and over the life cycle of the product under a non-renewing free repair warranty (NRFRW), a renewing free repair warranty (RFRW) and a restricted renewing free repair warranty (RRFRW(n)). Properties of the model are demonstrated using a simulation study.
