A Million Element Integral Field Unit (MEIFU)

We describe an instrument concept that will provide simultaneous spectra for a million spatial samples on the sky. With the proposed field of view and spectral resolution, it will be able to measure redshifts and line strengths for around 2-4000 z~3-7 galaxies in a 16 night campaign. The main science driver is to obtain a complete census of the star formation properties of galaxies with 2.5<z<6.7 as a function of luminosity, environment, morphology and redshift. This survey will also allow us to study the evolution of the 3 dimensional power spectrum and test the connection between these early galaxies and the large scale structure of the Lyman Alpha forest. Additional science drivers include [OII] emitters with 0.13<z<1.52, abundance gradients in nearby galaxies, searches for planetary nebulae in nearby galaxy groups and clusters, lensed emission line objects, and spectroscopic searches for objects with continuum breaks. We expect that this instrument will make an ideal partner to the HST ACS, where ACS morphology and broadband colour information can complement the MEIFU spectroscopy and help remove any degeneracies in line identification.

Revisiting the Cosmic Cooling Crisis

Recent measurements of the K-band luminosity function now provide us with strong, reliable constraints on the fraction of baryons which have cooled. Globally, this fraction is only about 5%, and there is no strong evidence that it is significantly higher in clusters. Without an effective sub-grid feedback prescription, the cooled gas fraction in any numerical simulation exceeds these observational constraints, and increases with increasing resolution. This compromises any discussion of galaxy and cluster properties based on results of simulations which include cooling but do not implement an effective feedback mechanism.

Dynamical effects on galaxies in clusters

The observed morphological evolution since z ~ 0.5 within galaxy clusters provides evidence for a hierarchical universe. This evolution is driven by dynamical effects that operate within the cluster environment -- suppression of star-formation by ram-pressure and viscous stripping of the intra-galactic medium and tidal heating of disks by gravitational encounters.

Gone with the wind: the origin of S0 galaxies in clusters

We present the first 3-dimensional high resolution hydro-dynamical simulations of the interaction between the hot ionised intra-cluster medium and the cold interstellar medium of spiral galaxies. Ram pressure and turbulent/viscous stripping removes 100% of the atomic hydrogen content of luminous galaxies like the Milky Way within 100 million years. These mechanisms naturally account for the morphology of S0 galaxies, the rapid truncation of star formation implied by spectroscopic observations, as well as a host of observational data on the HI morphology of galaxies in clusters.
